Curly girl is too strict for me also. I think it really just takes time practicing with your own hair to see what works.I think there's some great curly girl advice, but it's definitely not one size fits all. I wish there were more KZfaq videos about non-Curly Girl approved products. I'm actually looking for good products WITH silicones. Thanks for the videos!

I have worn my hair curly my whole life (I'm 27)-- never went through a straightening phase. For years I used TIGI Curls Rock and it worked great for my hair. That has silicones in it, but it was a wonderful one and done product--especially because I almost always air dried. I started watching CGM videos for fun and for suggestions, but they often make me feel like I am doing crazy damage to my hair. Silicones don't have to be the enemy. I also wash my hair everyday (GASP!). It is just part of my routine that I enjoy, and since I don't even diffuse, I don't see why that's so terrible. Everyone is different!

I just read the book and she says it’s ok to use a diffuser and mild heat when you don’t have time to air dry, but avoid heat while you’re initially trying to recover your hair. Curly girls can also highlight or color their hair with semi and Demi-permanent color. It seems like some KZfaqrs haven’t read the book at all. Love your videos, though!

I feel this video so hard. Especially as a wavy girl, I struggle to find products that enhance my waves, and somehow feel bad that my hair reacts well with creams with silicones. I support those wavy/curly girls that can be strict with ingredients, but it just hasn't ever worked for me. Thanks for sharing this perspective!

I don't follow CG either but no shampoo isn't a rule. It just has to be sulfate free shampoo. A lot of people prefer cowashing most of the time, but TONS of people who follow CG use sulfate free shampoo. They also do sulfate washes once a month or so to keep up with build up. So the actual rule is just no sulfates unless you're doing a reset wash. Just to clarify for people who don't know about CG. Also, the rule about alcohols is just no DRYING alcohol. The others are fine. Also, there isn't a rule against brushing your hair. It's no DRY brushing your hair. Which is exactly what you said... So while I agree with a lot of what you said, I don't think you fully understand CG, because a lot of your arguments are actually supporting the rules you're just confused about the rules. Either way, it's definitely restrictive and doesn't work for everyone and I don't follow it strictly either!

The sulfate/silicone cycle does not have to be nasty. There are some sulfates (ammonium lauryl sulfate and olefin sulfate) that are not nearly as stripping as sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate. They will easily get rid of dimethicone and your hair won't be super stripped or dry (depending on what shampoo you're using, I personally really like eva NYC). Dimethicone is not actually much different from emollients like coconut oil and shea butter. All three of those form a protective layer over the hair, which is a good thing. That layer prevents moisture from getting in, yes, but it also keeps it from getting out. So that's why you then wash it out with a clarifying (but not crazy stripping like head & shoulders) shampoo every so often. It's not a vicious cycle. It's just normal hair care. Properly cleanse (which will require the use of some sulfates if you're using dimethicone, but again, not as crazy an amount or as harsh as you'd think), replenish, wait a few days for your hair to get gross, and then repeat. There's also a professional hair stylist, Manes by Mells, here on KZfaq who goes over this in much more detail in her video "Why I don't follow the curly girl method." I mean this girl breaks every single rule you thought you had to follow for beautiful curly hair and her curls are popping and have been popping for years.

Okay just 10 seconds in and I totally agree that it’s not sustainable! I see so many routines and I *know* that I do not have the time or patience to do half of the steps/rules. I just wash my hair once or twice a week with a silicone and sulfate free shampoo and conditioner and then just let it air dry. Whatever it is will be what I deal with lol

the curly girl method has legit made me paranoid about silicones...and even though logically i know that ii had damaged my hair by using cheap shampoos and conditioners, not using a heat protectant and not using products to nourish my bleached hair. i still bleach it, but i baby it but the whole "no silicones" rules was drilled into my head by so many people that i'm still afraid. but yeah, i do a weird altered version of curly girl where i wash with sulfate free shampoo and deep condition using a silicone free mask. and i haven't figured out stylers, and now that it's quarantine and i'm always wearing my hair in a low ponytail with a scrunchie i'm like whatever.

I don't get why people think that you are not supposed to clarify or brush and blowdry your hair at all when doing cgm .... especially for wavy hair she recommends using a lowpoo+ diffusor and calm OR finger-detangle your hair while it's wet and drenged in conditioner... And when you see some interviews with lorraine Massey you can see that she's also been bleaching her her hair for the longest... on the other hand she is in fact very strict when it comes to straighten your hair and use silicones and sulfates on curly hair... If you want to stick to that it's totally up to you of course, do what works for you and your hair... Hope everyones doing good during those crazy times (Btw. sorry for my bad English, it's not my first language)!

I started using a conditioner that had silicone in it and it’s led to me having buildup since my sulfate free shampoo doesn’t help with the build up. So I got a sulfate shampoo that I plan on using about once a month to make sure my hair isn’t being completely striped. it’s all about what works for certain people. My hair has been flourishing like no other with my conditioner. I wouldnt wanna go back to the CGM.

I tried this method. I have like... 2A hair so this might not be for everyone. But my super fine hair HAS to be brushed. lol I also was spending like 40 minutes on my hair out of the shower. I'm sorry if anything takes me that long daily... i'm not doing it. I tried it maybe 4 times and i stopped. Its definitely not one size fits all of a method.

Have you ever tried Carina Organics hair products? Would love to see a review on those, as I've been curious about their citrus line. Specifically I've heard good things about the deep treatment conditioner. I'm on a search for a go-to conditioner that checks all my boxes as far as ingredients and that one actually does. My first video i've watched by you and definitely not going to watch more, sorry. You video would have been much shorter if you had said everything you had to say once rather than changing the wording over and over. Also, you need to know what the real method is before you make a video commentary. It sounds very much like you heard some stuff from some people and assumed they were quoting rules in the book when they were not. Most of what you mentioned is not a real rule in the book.
