Very interesting not only for Tabla but for any musician and of course especially those interested in Indian music!

Have been listening to tabla in classical and semi classical as well as pop music for years and never knew this. Hope someone can start a dedicated tabla tutorial series where such things are explained. For amateur musicians like myself, it would be a big help too.

Once, I met a tabla which was almost completely hollow instead of the usual half-hollowed one. Interestingly, the tun bol played on such an unusual tabla produced a note close to komal re.

This is certainly an interesting fact. But this is by no means anything new. I think the reason it may not be spoken about so much is that it's just not really viewed as that much of a significant thing. And in regards to the clashing of tones, because in Indian classical concerts there's so much variety of tone and intonation, small things like the tone of the "Tun" on the tabla often gets lost in the background, therefore not really affective the music being performed. Now obviously if someone is performing a Raag that say doesn't have 'Shuddha Rishab' and then the tabla player is constantly playing 'Tun' all the time then there is a risk of clashing, but I mean it's very rare to find a tabla player playing in that fashion and very unlikely to happen under normal circumstances.

fun times, I heard a very strong re in a video by Zakir hussian recently. Years ago, I remember hearing a clean ga coming from the tabla in one of Kishori Amonkar recordings (but then one hears a Ga in bathroom fans and beard trimmers too so not sure if this is to do with a particular stroke on the tabla).

Tenía un parche y el Tabla afinaba en Si b y en Tu en Do. Cambié ese parche y ahora lo afino en Do pero el Tun suena en Mi b. Sólo he visto un Tabla que el Tun está un tono y medio más alto que el Na (un Dayan de Zakir Hussain) Puedes decirme a qué se debe eso ? Gracias

Hello there! As You mentioned that if the Tabla is tuned in (Sa) then the open sound must be (Re), which is only one note higher. Please Correct me if I am wrong, I think the open sound is two notes higher in pitch, let suppose you tuned it on C(major), the open sound wouldn't be C(#) or D(b) but it would be D(major).

How strange to find this video today as today I discovered this very thing today. Mine is a semitone higher. Mabye there is a correlation based on the diameter of the tabla and the diameter and thickness of the Syahi?
