Many people place the table saw as the most important tool in the shop but few verify it's state of tune and make adjustments to optimize it's performance. In this episode I go through my table saw discussing techniques you can use to tune up your jobsite, contractor, hybrid or cabinet saw utilizing a variety of tools and techniques.

Sean, you did what I did when setting up that left wing extension. It looks like you bolted on the front and the back bolts first and then the center two bolts. This creates that ridge that you’re finding. There’s a fair amount of flexibility in these cast-iron wings. Loosen all 4 bolts, then tighten down and flush the two bolts in the center. Then flush and tighten up the bolts on the front and back. This will flush the wing to the main table.

Yep, I was pretty disappointed at first with how one of the wings on my CPS was cupped front to back. Through a bit of "gentle persuasion", I managed to get it fairly flush.

Yes, At first I was shocked at the wing was not flat and parallel with the table. But a quick call to tech-support got me straightened out and I was happy to move along. I did a Sawstop assembly video that shows this exact problem. Take a look at it on my channel.

Great video! You got 48 minutes of my time. The main takeaway for me was that digital angle finders suck. I also learned how cutting at a 45 degree angle gets really complicated due to a 3D like situation. I want to point out to others that there is something called runout. This means your blade will wobble, naturally, because it not possible to get it perfect because of tolerances. With the dial caliper, you can map the blades runout and split the difference in the middle. This will be the best place to measure against to find 90 degrees. This is all well and good but remember physics class, that blade is spinning fast and those teeth have weight. So what happens, the blade ends up spinning and the inertia of the weight of the teeth pull the blade outward. This helps straighten the blade in a real cut. So in my world, I map the runout or wobble, split the difference and measure 90. Then I make a test cut and I like to use some wood that is close to the total possible height of the blade. It's gotta be safe though. This will amplify any error. That cut piece is the real deal and is that's used in the determination of any further adjustments. Let me know if I missed or mixed up something. Fantastic video!

... and my Lovely Wife believes I am crazy to save my old toothbrushes. Factories coat gears with grease to prevent rust prior to consumer purchase. Good tip with WD-40 on the table top. Johnson's Paste Wax works very well on all smooth metals. (It's so much better than any automotive wax products ever made.) CMT - Formula 2050 Blade & Bit Cleaner 18 oz is biodegradable and non-toxic. Blade collars are the name of the two parts the blade is sandwiched between. (Order a new set if available, manufactures change designs often and parts become obsolete.) Three Circles: Modern Engineers are understanding now what the ancient Egyptian engineers knew back then. Great video.

Yes, Sean, you have attracted the attention of a journeyman machinist, but I am posting to praise your efforts to enlighten everyone to the techniques of table saw adjustment. The methods you have presented here will go a long way towards helping the average hobbyist woodworker create a better and more useful and enjoyable woodworking tool. These techniques can also be carried-over to most other woodworking machinery with just a little thought. That being said, (Uh-Oh, here it comes) I realize that you are promoting Woodpecker's fancy alignment system because of sponsorship, but for us poor folks with portable construction-grade tables saws, the cost of such fancy test equipment can easily exceed the cost of our entire saw! I would like to see you expand this instruction using a simple El Cheapo dial indicator and magnetic base (the ones that can be had as a kit for under $50). With a little ingenuity, I know you can create a simple technique to fill the gap between a wood dowel with pencil and a $200+ custom alignment kit, plus a dial indicator and base have many more applications than a dedicated table saw alignment kit. If you have trouble coming-up with an idea, feel free to contact me as several come to mind right away.

I took effort to show how to do it with a dowel and pencil in this video like you're asking for. Plus I also showed combination square and the Grizzly setup which is in the price range you discussed for bought solutions. Thanks for the complement but you're asking me to show exactly what I demonstrated in the video. The woodpecker was only in a portion of this video. Those are just measurement tools, they don't affect adjusting which is the same no matter how you measure.

I agree, the $200 limited-use tool prices a lot of hobbyists out (myself included), but I think the technique Shawn showed with the dowel and pencil is enough to show the principle without making the video have long stretches of redundant steps. Absolutely, the dowel and pencil could easily be upgraded using a cheap dial indicator and a metal rod, but I think his use of the Woodpeckers alignment system shows that same idea, just with a more precise tool. I think Shawn's being fair and honest in showing as much as he did of alternatives. You can't say the same for a lot of the other YT content creators, most wouldn't even bother to show cheaper options. I would also hazard a guess that he isn't actually sponsored by Woodpeckers, but just received the tool at a discount, or for free, in exchange for it being shown in the video. One other thing to note, Woodpeckers still offers their original alignment saw gauge for $90 (or $66 if you already own a dial indicator, or want to source a cheaper one). You won't be able to check your fence alignment using the left miter slot, but you certainly can check the fence with the right miter slot. Speaking from personal experience, it has improved the output of my job site saw (within the limitations of the saw itself). As with any purchase, compare the cost of the tool against what value you personally will get out of it. If loose joints and unintentional taper on cuts grinds your gears, maybe the extra bit of money spent on an alignment system will reduce the need for recuts or extra time spent trying to fix problems.

No, you did get lucky (or I was just unlucky). The blade was out about .010 from the miter slot on my Sawstop PCS. I wouldn't call the table adjustment "difficult" but still a bit of a pain. Got it to within .002 and called it good.
