Many of you seek attaining the necessary skills that will bring you a step closer to that DJ title and the recognition that comes along with it, yet fail to channel any of that energy into learning the history behind those techniques. A DJ's eagerness to learn how to execute a "boomerang" should be coupled with curiousity regarding who authored the "boomerang" and the basic scratches that make up the technique.
On September 17th, 2018, Jerome Hewlett aka DJ Cash Money lectured my #djskillsandstyles and #advanceddjskills students on all things DJing. What inspired Cash Money to create the "Drag" scratch? Who invented the "Transformer" scratch? The origins of positioning your turntables "Philly styles" or "battle mode" and a myriad of other topics were covered.
Some may intepret the content as controversial but none can deny the information being dessiminated in this lecture comes from a place of honesty.
(*Honorable mention to Dan Ault for assisting me in documenting a memorable and historic chat)

...I had to stop at around 42 mins in because I did not think Cash was goin' to go into THAT!!! LOL...I get butterflies in my stomach every time I heard a piece of this story! That transformer scratch "back story" is just amazing: how did it develop, who invented it, who introduced it to the world on wax first, etc, etc?

1984 The year DJ BATTLE HISTORY WAS CEMENTED. I traveled from Willingboro NJ to many parties where either Cash, Rasheen, Spinbad and Jeff were at, there were many other DJ's around also. Many parties turned into after party dj battles lol It was about DJ's having fun but showcasing their skills so many records that had certain breaks in them. If you took the time prior to a battle to study the records and become part of the band on that record then you made and solidified your creativity. Being versatile is a plus. Country records had breaks, jazz records had breaks, international records had breaks, it was just how you flipped it during your routine. I must say battled the best in Philly during 1984 to 1985 on those Friday and Saturday nights was worth the trips down there. My Aunt June that lived on Westminster laughed about my homemade backpack of records and my sandwich bag of Stanton and Pickering phono cartridges. And those turntables were either left or right of the mixer, paired. Not too many DJ's have any idea of how to scratch with one hand. Rasheen is my dude he invented the mixer in the middle idea along with Cash. Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens Iron. We as a whole questioned, encouraged, couched, and challenged each other to bring out the best of God Given Skills. DJ Rob Swift we battled on several stages even in record stores while digging for records lol to see who could find the break to juggle. Yes DJ'ing saved many of our lives opened many doors fed and still is putting food on the table. We became friends even from being from different places in the world. To the future DJ's learn, listen, absorb and be humble never be afraid to showcase your skills. Much Respect to The Foundation of DJ's 1970's to the mid 1990's add your name the list is very long because every dj WORKED HARD TO MASTER THEIR CRAFT. AND YES THAT GEMINI MIXER WAS THE TRUTH and they had one with an echo knob ! Create your own style it is all about the music. And try not to be a "celebrity dj"....

Also even though Cash Money Pioneered the transformer scratch, I give mad respect to Grand Dragon K.D. and Jazzy Jeff, for even representing the transformer scratch on different levels as well. Mad love and respect to Philly.

I am a teacher in marketing on a university and DJ in my spare time. I watched many video's of Rob teaching about DJing, scratching and hip hop history. So many people might laugh or couldn't believe this as a serious minor or major but if you watch this, Rob really lifts it to an academic level. Unbelievable and deep respect for passing the knowledge like this! 🙏

Imagine enrolling on a DJ Course and Cash Money turns up at one of the weekly sessions to do a talk. Now that would be amazing! I live in the U.k and if able, I would sign up to classes in a heartbeat. Also I brought tickets to see Cash Money in 1988 Bristol England U.K but I think Cash was unable to get into the country at the time, I was only 16 years old. But we still know the Mighty Hard Rocker Cash Money reigns supreme and is a legend over here to this day for what he has given to Hip Hop!

I’m late to the party watching this video, but I was already aware of some of the history with the transformer scratch and Cash and Jeff. I wasn’t expecting Cash to mention the issue he had with Jeff, but I can understand. Both of those guys are some of my favorite DJ’s to watch. It would be incredible to be able to see them both on the same stage. Not to battle, but to do a routine together. That would be sooooo ill. Holla.

Another excellent interview Rob and again, I'm learning new information about our pioneering DJs, that I never knew before. And it's very unfortunate that Cash Money until now, hasn't received credit that he deserves, for his transformer scratch and, it's time for him to receive his credit for his talents now. It's also extremely unfortunate that, what I consider to be the arts & crafts of scratching to be both disrespected and, pushed further into the background, by those who either don't care or, ignore it completely as well. But above all that, pioneering DJs like, Cash Money and others who continue to show their jaw dropping scratching skills, should keep pushing harder to make both the unappreciative EDM artists, and the lesser skilled DJs, respect and recognize the creative aspects of the scratching aspect of DJing, So mad respect to you Rob, for first showing others to express themselves through DJing, and for giving us insightful information through interviews of the highly respected and, the unsung DJs of our time. So keep up the good work, peace!

Todah Ahki Rob 4 postin' this. Wish i coulda been there. I've been listenin' 2 Ca$h since 198-freekin'4!! He'z my all time favrit DJ 4 3 reasonz. 1st off he'z damn nasty & alwayz haz been. 2. He'z a humble, appreciative, down 2 earth kat, even tho he haz evry rite 2 B arrogant az fudg!! & 3. I have indirect personal history with him. He used to kut at my cousin'z house in Hammonton, NJ (Eddie Jenkins) back B4 the records & the world wide fame. I used to bring those cassettes of Ca$h cutN bak 2 the hood in Queens, B it Jamaica, or Hollis/St.Albans, Especially at Shake's house, (Boogie Boy 4 The Dynamic Breakers) even blowin' DJ Klark Kent away 1 night he happened 2 B passin' thru, & I wuz the man! The same way I wuz the man in Jersey 4 bringin' the latest bangN tunez & kutz from NY radio & parties that allowed me permission 2 ride on my cousin's team bus when they had away wrestlin' matches & i would get the team hype with wut wuz pumpin' out my boom box. Ca$h tho....WHOOO! Ca$h wuz rippin' the standardz yea...but he'd cut up Richard Pryor ("Don't give a Sh*t!"), Eddie Murphy ("Kick yo ass!") & wutever else wuz outta the ordinary & make it hela funky. So yea. Xcellent post m'man. I laughed, i cried...& am damn proud of both of U. I pray 1 day i run in2 U again, like i did a few yearz bak in the late 90z at the Post Office on 33rd St & 8th. & i'll start up a convo the same way i did bak then, but this time drop sum crazy knowledge on U that i'm sure U'll appreciate. I can tell U & Ca$h the EXACT reason the Hip Hop DJ culture iz underappreciated, & undermined here in the statez, & itz part of sumN thatz comin' that we all need 2 prepare 4. & no i'm not "1 a THEM..." crazeez. LoL. Itz just that while U followed Ur passion of DJ'in, I listened & loved it, but I followed my passion of seekin' FACTUAL TRUTHS, & have studied THAT about az long az i've heard & followed Ca$h Money. & The same way Ca$h haz a Documentary about his life, I have Documentaries about TRUTH. & i wanna share them with my brethren, the same way i wanna hear y'all stories. So...keep up the good work, & May The Most High YAH bless both U & Ca$h. & YAH willing we'll cross paths. Shalom.

The 'drag' scratch name is confusing for many dj's who were active before people started claiming & naming scratches. Scratching to the funk also has an early example of scratching using the audio which was reversed when the dj was back cueing. The reversed audio was not normally used . Robbie B & Jazzy J - Rock the go go was also another very influential track for djs .Jazzy J was reverse scratching the oh my god phrase which was on Cold Crush Brothers - Punk Rock Rap or Doug e fresh- the show. Using the reverse audio signal unleashed more expressive & complex scratch patterns. Jazzy J is un-credited with expanding & advancing the reverse audio scratch techniques , his dj name also conflicted with Jazzy Jay of the Zulu nation.
