As Liu Guoliang, Kong Linghui and Wang Tao retired, there was one question on the minds of table tennis fans - who was going to carry the burden of being the best table tennis player from China next? During the 2000s, Ma Lin, Wang Liqin and Wang Hao were feared by everyone, they were talented, hard working & relentless table tennis players who had what it takes to win it all - only, they did not win it all. Watch my new video where we can look back on how these three table tennis icons prevented each other from becoming grand slam champions.

Quick note - due to copyright claims about 10 seconds of video got deleted :( 4:03 - Wang Liqin defeated Kong Linghui at the 2001 WTTC for his 1st world championship title 5:17 - Ma Lin lost against Joo Sae Hyuk in the semi finals of the 2003 WTTC, while on the next table Wang Liqin lost to Werner Schlager at the semi finals as well

Semi-final WTTC 2003 was Schlager-Kong. Schlager-Wang was quarter-final.

Ma Lin is my favorite, I think he had the best shot-making capability of the three and he also inspired me to keep playing with a pen hold style. However he was not quite as consistent as Wang Liqin and Wang Hao. I would rank his 2008 Olympics win as the biggest accomplishment of all time, not only to finally overcome a career full of "near misses" (outside of the world cup) but also because it was in his home country. What was not mentioned in the video is that Wang Liqin and Ma Lin both won the gold medal in men's doubles in 2000 and 2004 respectively. Wang Hao must be the greatest "second place" player of all time.

as a Chinese student currently learning in London, it feels so wired that I feel such fun and resonance watching your videos! 2022 is a brave new year for many legends in table tennis, Tim Boll, Ma Long and so on. And it’s so interesting looking back at the history and see how these legends come to be! Big thanks! I can’t wait to watch more of your videos!

These types of videos are missing from the TT online content. Thank you for those. As someone who only started recently to follow TT, I feel that Ma Long, FZD and Xu Xin had the potential to have a similar story in the 2010s, But Ma Long was way too dominant and FZD was still really young to compete. I kinda feel that FZD will not have similar competition from the new Chinese generation.

Thank you. I wonder who will be FZD's biggest opponent in the years to come? Will it be Liang Jingkun, Hugo Calderano, Harimoto, or maybe even up and coming Lebrun. Time will only tell :)

He was intimidating in my opinion - you don't meet that many tall and strong table tennis players. I am stunned how he didn't manage to win a single World Cup. Great player nevertheless.🏋🏼‍♂️

Thank you Danny, i would love to, only thing is i am limited by available time, therefore i don't want to make any promises i can't fulfill (like i did few times already lol). I would first like to create a video about Jun Mizutani - having that he recently retired where Timo is still active. Once Timo retires i will make a video for sure. 🏓😌

Hey TT Report! If there ever were a team match between CNT 2000-2010 (Ma Lin, Wang Liqin, Wang Hao) and CNT 2010-2020 (Ma Long, Zhang Jike, Xu Xin), both in their prime, which team, do you think, would win? Ahh, my team match consists of 1 doubles game and 4 single (Olympic TT format) Also, it’s nice to see you pal after a long while. Wish you best luck!

Hello and thanks for the warm welcome :D As for your question, i thought about it several times because it is so interesting. Someone can correct me if they think i am wrong, but here is my opinion - as in many sports, each next generation has better training equipment, training facilities, modern tactics, wider knowledge of conditioning. Also question, are they playing with celluloid or plastic balls? :D In the last 5 years game has slowed down a bit (40+ plastic ball). I mention this because Ma Lin was heavily relying on 3rd ball attack, and with plastic ball on table that game style would be harder to accomplish (lower bounce, less spin, slower). It's really a good question, but hard at the same time. I would say that if they played with celluloid balls 2000s era would win, where if they played with 40+ balls, 2010s era would win. A diplomatic answer. I would like to hear what are other people opinions on this matter. :)

@@TableTennisReport I also couldn’t think of any better answer to my question. On a side note, we usually find it unfortunate for Wang Hao that he lost at 3 Olympic finals, thus couldn’t complete a Grand Slam; but why don’t we feel the same way for Ma Lin that he lost 3 WTTC finals?
@TableTennisReport
@TableTennisReport Жыл бұрын
@@ucanho7057 I do feel bad for Ma Lin, especially for his 2007 loss, however, WTTC are held every 2 years, while OG are held every 4. I feel bad for both not being able to win the trophy they were chasing for, but Ma Lin had around 7 tries to win it all where Wang Hao had only 3. I guess that is the reason i feel more bad for Wang Hao. But hey, they are both champions overall. Timo Boll didn't win OG or WTTC but he is a champion in the hearts of all table tennis fans and probably the most loved table tennis player ever :D
