I remember that as well. You would know that 2 squared was 4 and 3 squared was 9, so the square root of 5 was somewhere between 2 and 3. I can't recall anything beyond that, but you ended up with 2 point something as an approximation. To me, simply reducing these to something like 2 times the square root of 2 doesn't give you the answer to the square root of 8.

Yeah I see what you did, but what if you want to simplify or find out what the square root of 5 is? i know this would be (2. and a fractional part) of the answer. Actually the square root of 20 is (4. and a fractional number). Dont you solve for the frational part of the answer - and how without a caluator? We also used to use slide rules to figure out square roots of numbers - before scientific calculators came to exist. i still have my old Versalog slide rule from my college school days learning Electronic designs. Best way I find to do square roots is find the nearest lower square to the number in question. So for square root of 20 the nearest square is 4 which when squared is 16. So the square root of 20 would be (4. and a fractional number). Where the fractional part is done by a long division process (which I found online). So I guess you dont solve for irrational numbers in Algebra.

@boesftupfm
@boesftupfm 2 жыл бұрын
@@mendozajovy Every positive real number has two square roots; one is positive and the other is negative. In addition, a square root of a number is one of its two equal factors, for example, 2 is a square root of 4 because (2)(2) = 4, but ‒2 is also a square root of 4 because (‒2)(‒2) = 4. In general, a real number “a” is a square root of a nonnegative number “b” if a² = b. HOWEVER BY DEFINITION, the symbol √ b is used to designate the nonnegative or principal square root of any nonnegative real number b, e.g., √4 = 2 is used to indicate the nonnegative or principal square root of 4, and ‒√4 = ‒2 is used to indicate the negative square root of 4. Although the principal square root of a positive number is only one of its two square roots, the designation “the square root” is often used to refer to the principal or nonnegative square root √ b. This is why √4 = 2, rather than ‒2. This is the way I've learned it. 52.3K views View upvotes
