A big revolution is players moved away from table a lot, and that allows much more complex and powerful hits. It was more like a board game, then it evolved into more of a court game.

It's interesting that tt today didn't look like the modern game of today until about the 2000's. Even now, Ma Long developed a better backhand and uses it more than, say, 10 yrs ago. it's becoming all about speed/power offense rather than defense. Nowadays, people are also staying closer to the table for rallies rather than backing up, requiring machine-like precision to get to the ball.

Because equipment was much slower and there was less spin. Also because sport science has improved. Tennis from older eras had a similar evolution, like looking at amateurs. Different technique along with equipment and training. Interestingly they seemed to get bigger crowds back then though. Perhaps because rallies actually existed in those days.

@@zr5438 Ma Long can only dream of Waldner's placement.Ma Long is an entirely conventional player;he didn't invent any shot.Actually, technique wise he lagged behind Wang Hao and Zhang Zhike as he didn't have a real backhand loop. The shakehand style was perfected by the Swedes in the 80's and 90's combining pace with spin and power. The style hasn't evolve much since then ,only the BH banana flick is a new invention.Waldner invented the pendulum grip,so his contribution to the shakehand style is enormous. He even took techniques from penhold style like the chop block.Ma Long is no match for Waldner. He was nannied by Liu Guoliang for many years without even introducing any innovation to the game.Zhang Zhike having a much more experimental style fared much better till his body gave up.

They left out 2 of the big 3 changes to the game! In the 1940's modern sponge rubber was invented for the paddle allowing for a lot more power and spin. The old defensive chopping style that led to a 2-hour long point in the 1930's gave way to the modern-looking attacking style that we've seen in some form ever since. Then in 2000 the ball size was increased from 38 to 40mm to make the sport more spectator friendly, slow the game down, lengthen the rallies. Interestingly the Europeans and the Chinese both felt they'd gain an advantage over one another with the bigger ball. Euros thought the game would become more like tennis with taller players' reach advantage at least closing the gap on Chinese dominance. The Chinese used the slower ball speed to develop the RPB or reverse-penhold backhand which gave many of their players a very tricky alternate shot and surface which probably increased their dominance. Then in 2015 the ball's material was changed from cellulose to plastic, making it harder to spin but faster and bouncier, giving attacking players even more of an advantage.
