I don’t know, I’m seeing this comment repeated about a thousand times, but I don’t see how you can read Tolkien’s description of Sauron or his story that way. There are certainly parallels with Saruman’s story and the rise of industrialization and ecological spoliation that followed, but while Sauron’s story had the latter, it was more mindless and didn’t track with corresponding technological advancement. And where does the bureaucracy and micro come from? Is this in the Unfinished Tales somewhere? It’s certainly not in the Silmarillion.

@@keoghanwhimsically2268 Sauron was originally a maiar who was pretty into order, and was only led to Melkor because he saw the power he had as a way to create order. His fall from grace stemmed from his desire to basically bring order to everything. I think this was in some of Tolkiens letters.

@@LancePeebles That’s... pretty far off. Sauron is a divine being, a Maia. Think of him like an angel of sorts. He was created to work with Aule, a Valar (think of them like higher-ups in the celestial hierarchy without quite being gods, maybe somewhere in the realm of Seraphim). He was a being of order first and foremost, and when he got corrupted by Melkor, aka Morgoth (basically Satan), he became obsessed with bringing everything under HIS control. The DnD Lich WAS based off of him later, but it is a distinctly different being since it has to be, y’know, human. Or at the least mortal. Sauron can’t really die. He DOESN’T die at the end of LotR, he is merely reduced to a shadow of his former self, never again able to enact his will unto the world. The Silmarillion goes into a lot of detail about his origins and nature. It’s well worth the read.

Tolkien disliked his story being considered as an allegory and that's that, I won't go against his wishes and expressed intent. To call Sauron and Saruman symbols of industrialism is to do exactly that - piss on the author's wishes. They were never meant to symbolize anything. If you think industrialism and the horrors of war inspired their creation - that's your take on their narrative genesis, but to proclaim them as symbols is to go too far.

Tolkien doesn't make clear whether Sauron helped forge the lesser rings or just gave instructions in ring lore, but what he does make clear is that he forged the One ring in secret away from the elves. Like, personally made it. "He bent all his might and malice and will to dominate upon its creation" from Gandalf. That's what made it so much more powerful than the other rings. not just because of the Ring thing. The rulers of that kingdom are the ancestors of the ones who later founded and ruled Gondor. In short, they're Aragorn's ancestors and were the early descendants of Elrond's brother. He's always been a deceiver kind of guy. As for him being a blacksmith, he was a great one. Wow that was fantastic. And to be fair most of what you actually learn about Sauron is from Silmarillion, so you can certainly be forgiven for not knowing a ton about him. But honestly, deceit, charisma, and crafting genuinely were a huge part of his character.

This reminds me of my character in an evil game I played. The rest of the characters were like classical villains; mad scientist, murder/torturer of doom, stuff like that. My character was basically agreeable but with very low moral standards, but with a singular evil goal; genocide (of elves, specifically). He didn't go about it by killing rando elves all over the place; that draws attention of people who may want to put a stop to it. Instead he was working on an epic spell so that he could destroy all elves at once. Until then he just sort of went along with other ppl's plans (unless they were trying to benefit elves for some reason), made stuff for them, cast spells for them (he was by far the best caster in the group), etc. He carefully avoided being the mastermind behind stuff as he built greater and greater power, until he was a worms that walks-demilich (3.5 D&D style) with ridiculous amounts of arcane power.
