Details about the Taccom 3-Stage Adjustable Buffer system and Taccom Cushioned Buffer Spacer. My impressions and comparison to both a standard deadblow buffer and the Original Gentle Recoil System.
Taccom provided the Taccom 3-Stage Adjustable Buffer system and Cushioned Buffer Spacer for analysis and comparison.

Personally, I think that multiple stage buffers with springs have just one "big" advantage, that is it's typically easier to chamber the first round because the spring rate at the beginning of the stroke is lower. But other than that, what seems more effective to me is that instead of using a complicated system of multiple springs, just use one properly dimensioned heavy spring. It might be harder to rack, but will slow down bolt and buffer towards the end of the travel similarly, will also have the same return energy (closing impact) and will even have a little more tension upon the closed bolt which is not a bad thing on a blowback action. A heavier spring will also start to decelerate the moving mass harder sooner, creating a more gentle impulse (upon bottoming out on rearward travel) that a very progressive setup will have. Progressive setups to me only make sense when energy is converted, like in a shock absorber (like a kynshot buffer). With just springs the bolt returns with (practically) the same amount of energy as it's blown open, with shock absorbers energy is converted by oil or air beeing forced trhough valves and closing energy can be quite different, making the impact upon closing a lot less disturbing to the sight picture. With just pure blowback actions (without any form of delaying mechanics, like rollers, balls, levers, etc) it seems to be just a balancing act of bolt travel, spring rate and bolt weight., with a Kynshot buffer beeing the most useful commercial buffer system, because it actually "kills" (converts) energy. Super fancy systems that require complicated mechanics, or run at the extreme side (extremely heavy or extremely fast) can be problematic. I especially mistrust the setups that use too light of a moving mass in a blowback action. They run very dirty, are harsh to the firearm (especially trigger group) and can even enter the zone of beeing potentially dangerous becasue of exposing the pressurized case base to soon. What makes the biggest difference is typically stance and mount. Max Leograndis has some good videos on that. Blowbacks are cool, they can be extremely reliable once set up correctly, but if you're looking for a flatter shooting gun, there are a lot of good delayed blowback actions out there that work a lot better than any fancy buffer setup. If you're no willing to pay for a JP-5 a Stribog A3G is ugly but performing very well, and if you like your AR-9 geometry I guess a Mean Arms Roller delayed system is the way to go.

Only disagree with using a strong spring. It may reduce the bottoming out impact, but instead that energy is transferred to the chambering impact, jostling the user and making the recoil experience worse. In my experience and research, strong springs can cause many more problems in a blowback than they solve. See here: blowback9.wordpress.com/2021/04/07/the-case-against-308-rifle-recoil-springs-in-a-9mm-ar/ According to published firearms experts who have the math to back it up, the extra tension a strong spring provides at bolt close is negligable compared to the blowback forces experienced during the critical first few milliseconds of bolt movement. However, you do what works best for you! If you're not having blowouts and it feels right, then it should be fine.

@@Blowback9 I get your point. Increasing moving mass is a lot more effective in delaying bolt movement and keeping bolt velocity at bay than increasing spring weight. It just seems, that a very progressive/multiple stage spring setup is a ineffective way to solve problems, that would have been solved by a harder spring, or (even better, as you stated) a higher moving mass. Or in other words, if you have to slow down carrier/bolt speed in the last third of travel a lot, it's likely to fast to begin with. Regarding 308 springs and buffers, I mainly agree. Solid buffers are really not ideal, and 308 springs in such setups will be very harsh on the closing impact. However, with setups that somewhat soften both the opening and closing impact, a 308 spring can work really well too. It's probably one of the most common Blowback Setups for competition to use a kynshot buffer, a additional weight to both increase moving mass and to shortstroke the bolt to some extent, a 308 spring and a wave spring and spacer. This usually will dampen the impacts quite well but will also keep a snappy enough characteristic to be really fast back on target for those that understand how to mount the carbine properly and consistently. And will also run extremely reliable. Also, with shortstroking the action the bolt has less travel (and therefore time) to pick up speed and momentum upon closing, so a 308 spring can work well. With a "full stroke" setup, you'll definitely feel the difference between 223 and 308 spring a lot more. I've run into ejection issues when experimenting with competition setups, but with good ejector geometry this only started to happen with a very aggressive short stroke setup that stopped the bolt about a quarter inch after the ejector protruded the bolt face. But there the biggest challenge was to keep the opening impact at bay, because such a short travel requires a lot of moving mass to slow down the bolt in time to not impact extremely violently upon opening. Feeding issues can be a thing, I mainly use lighter 115gn bullets (so the catridge stack is not as heavy as with some 147gn bullets) and I also used strong springs in the mags, max loaded to 32 rnds (IPSC rules). With heavy bullets, higher capacities and weak springs I can totally see how feeding can be problematic with such a short window to push up the next cartridge in time. And regarding trigger reset, yes, I made similar experiences. To high bolt velocity is really hard on the trigger group and sometimes the disconnector failes to catch the hammer. There's also a difference in how much bolt travel different triggers need to reliably catch the hammer. During the time I shortstroked very aggressively I used a Triggertech Adaptable that requires very little bolt travel to reset (but amplifies trigger freeze because of it's characteristics). One can use short stroke bolts with modified hammer cocking ramps too of course. Anyways, thanks fo the reply, appreciate it, and I appretiate you taking the time and effort you put into the website and videos. Enjoyed reading the article.

What about the 3-stage, the cushion buffer spacer, in an A5 buffer tube, plus one of the spacer weights from your GRS, and the short stroke bolt? Would the added weight help with recoil?

I asked Extar about switching from a .308 spring to a carbine spring and got a general non-answer about it being best and safest as designed. Heh The only thing holding me back is all the polymer. (I just want to make it easier to run the changing handle.) The bolt and solid buffer at 24oz, so that's good.

I know you're a dedicated 9mm lower guy but any chance you'd examine the Mean Exomag that is coming out? I'm in CA and the Endomags were an option to run with a maglock. A glock convertor won't work. We'd need to go with fin grip featurless builds. I'm trying to build what I have so far.
