I have pictures painted by a good friend who died of cancer..they r gorgeous..they r immortal..one is of the old home her grandparents lived in and another is of a chuck wagon with the camp cook..they r great and very large..one us in charcoal and the other in pastels..very homey and when i.look at them I think of her...wonderful lady..

I have the tail wing of my dad’s airplane mounted on the wall in my living room - in a corner so nobody hits their head on it because it is obviously very solid. But my dad died when I was ten and he built that airplane himself. Every piece was cut and shaped by him, my mother bucked every rivet with him. I consider it a large original sculptural art piece. So I don’t care at all what anyone thinks. I didn’t do the whole room in “airplane theme” though lol.

Yay! I’m glad you enjoyed. Sorry to hear about you losing your pup. It’s always heartbreaking. Albert is 19. We rescued him about 4 years ago. He’s blind and fairly deaf, but he is so courageous and such a survivor. We love him so much! 🐶🐶🐶

I have always disliked the art pairings that are almost identical. Always assumed they were meant to be paired and were slightly different. Embarrassed to say I haven't noticed they are often the same! And just hung in different directions. Somehow that's worse. 😂

I absolutely love and respect how you advocate for kids throughout your videos. I've known so many people that refuse to let their children change their rooms because it was too expensive/troublesome to set up the design or furniture to begin with and the child wasn't even old enough to know anything when it was set up, let alone ask their parents to go so far overboard in the styling.

My parents allowed my sister and I to choose the carpeting and wallpaper for our rooms. I'm sure they would've vetoed anything too extreme. This was back in the 1970s. I shudder, when I think of some of my choices. I had a fake Tiffany hanging lamp made of plastic, bright green. I went through a green phase for a few years, due to my love of the outdoors.

I came up with a great idea for the space above my bed. My husband and i grew up in different states (California and Alaska) we lived in Alaska for years and then moved to another state. I found local artists from the areas we grew up and got watercolors from places we both recognized from our childhood. They are framed above our bed and i see my husband sometimes just gazing at the painting when he's feeling homesick. It's a beautiful scene across the cook inlet to a mountain called the sleeping lady.

Much better to print out sassy text messages from your teenager and hang those up instead, such as: "Please don't get out of the car when you pick me up", and "Did you actually ASK the hairdresser to do that to you?"

Love how candid you are with your advice. I love clocks with pendulums. My grandparents didn't have electricity, but their mantel clock was always working. I loved it. We have a few clocks; mantle, Grandfather, cuckoo clocks. Our children now grandchildren are making memories of our clocks. We spread it all around the house. More fun than one huge clock. We cut off chimes if guests are in the house. If you live here, not even noticable!

I used to rent a beautiful cottage that unfortunately every year saw more decor until it started to become cluttery. The worst was the giant clock that appeared on the deck. You could even see it from inside when you were trying to admire the water view. When I’m on holiday I don’t want a giant clock in my relaxation space telling me what time it is!

I was gifted a large clock in the late 90's. It's shiny flat aluminum with a smallish inner face that is coloured. I really like it in my dining room to tell the time quickly from the kitchen. I don't always have my ph in the kitchen, I don't wear a watch ...& the only thing that has a time, is the microwave in the pantry, behind a door.

I’m the worst when it comes to giant clocks! I love clocks giant and otherwise. I have 3 antique clocks in the living room as well as a giant clock! ACK! I have three vintage clocks in our breakfast room AND another giant clock!! Well this is embarrassing 😉. Let’s don’t get me started about other rooms in the house…. I have a wall clock in my kitchen. Now that I am older, it is easier to tell the time from the clock, the digital clocks are too small to see. I also have a mantel clock. It looks so pretty.

I too, love art and have been collecting pieces that mean something to me for decades! You can’t just go out and buy a whole bunch of art and expect your home to feel uniquely yours. Take your time - the right pieces will come to you over time.

There is nothing like a ticking clock to set me on edge!! Ahh Garrett you gave me validation today!! I once did a home visit to a gentleman who collected clocks …. At 12 noon they all went off!! He had one that sounded like a train !! That was one of the most stressful moments of my life, and I couldn’t get out of there fast enough! So no large clock for me and also no collection either ….I would spend my life trying to get them all register the exact same time!! Our home should be calming and cosy, not like a train station where you need to know the time every 5 minutes! 🐶🐶🐶 !

If you wanna see some really beautiful wallpaper designs look up "William Morris". The art nouveau and Victorian styles of that era are breathtakingly beautiful. I can see myself using those patterns if the space asked for it.

Those identical art prints look to me like there was a sale on those particular prints so they bought two of them. It also makes it obvious that they are not real art or that they are mass produced.

A large clock on the wall is great when you live with a disabled person. They can glance at the wall and know when it’s time for meds, etc. A smaller clock on a shelf or table just doesn’t cut it. I am grateful there are beautiful large wall clocks available at reasonable prices in a variety of styles.

i need clocks everywhere because i have ADHD and time blindness is a big issue for me. internally i cant always tell the difference between 20 minutes and 2 hours. i kinda need the time thrown in my face. maybe not with a giant clock tho wonder if he’s got a video about design and accessibility

It's a good tip to make a room changeable. My son's nursery was animal themed, but I didn't use wallpaper. I did have cute wall decals so we could change them when we sold that house. The funny thing was, the bachelor who bought our house loved the nursery as is and said it would be his office and he would keep it lol. My son is 12 now and he has a space themed room, but it's just bedding and a few space pictures, so I can easily change them out if he gets tired of it. I painted the room his favorite color and everything else is fairly neutral, so it will grow with him. The pillow thing cracked me up. I grew up in the 80s and that's what I instantly thought when I saw the pillows on their corners. 😂 Albert is a cutie. ❤

I never realized the giant clocks are supposed to be "farmhouse". I wonder what the connection is? I've been in a couple of homes on working farms, and neither had huge clocks... probably because the only times that matter are sun up & sun down...😂

I love my giant clock :D Granted it’s not as giant, as it could be, and it’s just spikes with the number stuck on the end, and hands, so very open and almost not there from certain angles. But to me clocks are art and art that also does some thing is the best! But I hear you They don’t need to be right above you at the end of the dining room table staring down at you :D ps My ‘giantish’ clock is actually down the hallway between two doors so not very visible or dominant, but I still love it

So good to see you and Albert! Great points! The other reason I don’t like themed decor is because then your home starts looking like everyone else’s. Everyone uses seashells, anchors and lighthouses etc. Aside from a few special trinkets from the beach that I put in a glass decorative box I opted to use color and materials to express the relaxed beach vibe I like.

While getting our home ready for sale, we decluttered and then boxed excess home decor away. I love the way the house looks now. It’s clean, fresh and still comfortable and welcoming. Now I realize that we had too much decor in our home. I’m not talking about the art we had on the wall, because well, I love Art! But I did realize that too many home décor pieces makes a home feel too staged and very unnecessary. I now, no longer feel that I want to unbox the excess home decor. They were not needed in the first place. Do I miss the excess home décor in storage ..No! Therefore they were not needed. I guess we will be giving to charity or a garage sale will be necessary once we move. This was definitely an eye opener for me! Love that for me! 😊. Love seeing little Albert ❤, and you too Garrett ❤🤗🇨🇦

Sage advice for sure Garrett, I'm guilty of having too many pillows on the sofas, I do use them though to prop up my back and laptop, friends ask where do they sit and throw them on the floor. What a laugh you are but your advice is so on track. Big hugs to the fur babies and you!

One of the walls in my home looked particularly bare. So I hung one of my Chinese kites on it as a place holder until I figure out what to do with that space. It is a huge butterfly and adds a ton of color. 😅

We have a rather large clock in our computer room/office, but never in the living room or dining room. My husband's vision is failing, and he needs the large clock with black numbers on a white background.

Totally agree with you on using the same art pieces. I didn't have a ton of money to spend on art, so I spent hours going through Etsy for prints that conveyed the mood I wanted for the house without being too "matchy". Unique pieces that still fit together are so much better than two of the same painting!

Oversized florals can feel 18th century, too (depending on the pattern, of course) and thus actually totally fit an old European home with high ceilings and low wood panelling. ... but I grant you that those kind of homes are not in the majority.

Spot on about art work. Don't buy "home decore art" buy art. There are lovely orginal pieces at second hand stores and jumble sales, and often they will have better frames. This year's IKEA art will be found on the curb in a year or two.

Yes, art is very important in my opinion to curating a space. If someone can’t afford the masters, there are many opportunities to find reasonably priced art from fairs, schools, and emerging artists etc. I love to mix art from well known artists with lesser known or unknown artists. No mass produced in my home. 😊😊😊

Good info about the clocks; I haven't processed how that could affect guests visiting. For me, wall paper is usually a no due to how most don't know how to integrate it.

We’ve chosen natural cherry cabinets because the wood is so beautiful. We’re trying to get away from tan walls and like you, love blue. Do you have any suggestions of mixing blues with cherry?

I love this video Garrett hon ! You made me laugh about the twin art works, lol I wish I knew how to style a fire place mantle. Maybe you can address it. I’m traditional. I have one powder blue pillow on the center of my sleeping pillows. That’s it ! Hubby hates them. Albert is the cutest ever 🥰

I know you asked about styling a mantle, but I thought maybe I could offer a suggestion for above the mantle. My parents had a really nice big framed round mirror. It made objects reflected look smaller- I think you call it concave. One of the few things I liked in their decor. I found with the mirror being such a nice object, you didn't feel the need for mantle clutter- until Christmas came around, and then Christmas decor would look nice on the mantle. Anyway, - just a thought, if you weren't really into mantle styling.

I don't even have a clock on my wall anymore. I can't see well enough to know what the clock says anyway. So the batteries would run out and I wouldn't know it. And finally a friend would say your clock is broken. After having that happen a few times I just gave up on o'clock. Drives people crazy that the clock on my oven isn't set either. But again, I can't see it, so what do I care :-) somebody will set it for me, but then the electricity goes out and it's all over again.😅

Quite possibly your best, most entertaining video ever! The whole time I'm cringing, thinking, is he gonna mention something I do?! Relief...I got rid of my big clock years ago. Now the space has a canvas printed with 2 botanical drawings, labeled in German. A lot more interesting.

Lol, went through the big clock phase about 12 years ago. Your take on it cracked me up. So true. What possessed us to want a clock that big? Any chance grass cloth wallpaper will come back? Always liked it. Adds a little texture without being over the top.
