Tacoma's Gulches: A Virtual Tour

If you're like us, you often wonder what is at the bottom of the various gulches in Tacoma. Well, prepare to have those questions answered. There are a variety of untamed gulches that crisscross the city of Tacoma, some over 100' deep, and all of them reaching far into the heart of the city. These massive cuts in the earth have defied engineers, divided our neighborhoods, and defined the city's spirit. Come celebrate Earth day with us and learn about the history of Tacoma's gulches and get a sneak peek into those that have been developed and those that have remained defiantly wild.

When I was a kid we would play in the gulch between East C Street and McKinley Ave.

I like how poetic it is to see the Proctor Street bridge that forms an eye into the past (eye shape looking through)

After they sealed up the failed tunnel, there was still a lot of tunnel in place, and there was a house up near Yakima Ave, that had a hole in the backyard that was a bottomless pit- apparently it went down into the old tunnel and no matter what the people threw into the hole it never filled up. When I was in school there was always the urban myth that the tunnel was used to smuggle Chinese into the city. That myth arose from the fact that the Chinese had been forcibly driven out of town in 1885. Glad to see the old 11th St. bridge has been named for Murray Morgan, he was a teacher and friend of mine. When we were kids we used to collect junk from under the Yakima and 21st. St. bridges- the gulch was full of all sorts of trash including old cars that people has shoved over the edge. At the end of the 21st Ave bridge is Magoos Annex tavern which was previously Pat's tavern where a lot of beer was consumed over the decades.

I lived at the top I believe it was East Gulch. It was wonderful fun for the neighborhood kids with rope swings and nature. It is now a paved road with homeless encampment. O and the blackberries, my mom would sends us out picking. She made pies and cobbler and jam. So we liked them. Even fresh. It added to her cellar of jars along with things from her garden and trees. Even cherry pie. OH I miss that.

Super cool and spooky...I appreciate this because I have always been curious about these gulches but I am still not gonna go in them !!so thanks for sharing..great content!

Lived near the T&E Gulch when I was a kid. That gulch has the short freeway running through it. Lots of homeless folk live there, and, until the City fixed the the 34th Street bridge over it, was the place of many suicides. In fact, my stepmother witnessed a jumper. She was calling 911 and the man jumped. Later, she got a call from the man's brother who told her the man was having financial troubles and was suicidal about it.

As a child I played in swan creek daily and I know of several concrete structures down near the creek, and always wondered what they where used for and why they are there. One is near the bridge about .25 miles back and the other is probably 1-1.5 miles back. They are both single room structures, but the one farther down, has a roof and a large narrow window if I remember correctly.

Played there all the time as a kid in the early 90s some homeless guy named one eyed Willy used to Chase us around trying to catch us LoL 🤣

How safe are these Gulches for hiking and exploring? Are the majority over run by a lot of homeless and crime that makes it more dangerous? So if you hike East Gulch it will take you all the way to Mt. Rainier?

Great question. Every gulch I explored was very safe and I never saw any signs of homeless encampments or any other people at all except for Garfield Gulch. Garfield felt a little suspicious. Puget Gulch is a city park. Buckley Gulch was very wild and very empty.

@@jmo2215 The first half of Buckley gulch is really gorgeous, it gets a little wild or halfway through, the very end of it there’s a bunch of trash left over but nothing dangerous. Puget gulch is a great one to start with

Used to play in the swam creek gulch back when I was a kid in the early 90s and some homeless guy used to Chase us with dirty syringes his name was one eyed Willy used to have a blast in the gulchs first place I smoked weed to lol 🤣. Love you Tacoma.
