I think Barca had to win today, they messed up. Their next match is against Bayern, a team of great mentality. Also, Inter is up against Plzen and are the favorites. Props to Inter.

This game plan was tailor made for kounde and araujo. Kounde was sorely missed as he could have easily been the third centre back allowing balde on the other side to go high up the pitch. With Eric and kounde on either side of araujo would be good on and off the ball. Injuries did play a part in Xavi's team selection.

The 3-4-3 diamond is a very attacking system but it needs fast defenders like araujo, kounde... Also I liked that xavi went up 6v 5 in the final third, using Roberto very well. I think pedri and gavi should not like lewa alone in attack....

have to keep in mind, Inter were rather happy to secure a draw knowing barca would've gone full attacking mode all night. so i think xavi get his 6 but was unable to win it while like i said Inzaghi and Inter were the much happier side and could've even won it late in to the stoppage so he should get at least a 7.

I see 3 things that I heavily disagree with. 1. While Alonso starts games at center back, he doesn't spend time there, he is up field more than what you highlighted and draws that midfield into a 3 and the defense into a 2. This is why Inter counter that side several times. His lack of typical defensive responsibilities and abilities lead to problems for Barca when Inter counter up the middle and he's behind the play. A fourth goal should have come from the inability of that defender to play his role there at the end of the game. Barella's goal comes from his inability to get back quickly or play as a defensive player. Also, he's ineffective on set pieces at that goal post. He's good on attack, but most British pundits will overlook his deficits because he's good at moving forward and British pundits don't value a players defensive contributions or lack thereof. 2. Inter's defense was set more closely to each other than your depiction. The middle three Inter defenders were marking the center forward and the two set up midfielders. The Inter wingbacks were on the two wide forwards of Barca. Dembele and Dumfries and DeMarco with Rafinha I think. You have the center backs too wide. The Barca crosses were a result of a congested middle not allowing the through ball to movement. Most dangerous Barca attacks were long, high passes over, not through, because of the middle defensive set up. 3. As usual, British pundits value possession rather than position. Barca had possession but the number of good chances that forced saves or were saved by the woodwork - or scored - was essentially even 11 to 8 with a post. You call Xavi's tactics "successful" even though he didn't meet his goals, score more than the other guy. Not only did he not meet his goals, but the "defensive", positional Inter had the better chances to win the game outright than the "overloaded" attacking Barca. I think that you approve more of the all out desperate, mindless attacking frenzy than the much more collected and effective in this game (and to be honest the last one too) positional play. By any objective scale, Inter had a better plan and executed it better and if not for a post or a very young inexperienced player they could have humbled Barca with 5, while I think Barca are very happy to score 3. Giving Xavi a 6 for his "plan" is laughable. Giving Inzaghi a 6 while also collecting 4 points from the two game sequence in a crazy group stage is completely wrong, but typical of a British bias against Italians.

Man I felt so happy when I immediately noticed Roberto's position through the lines. Few years ago I wouldn't have made much of it but after following you for a while I immediately started to pick up the differences in Barca shape. Honestly I would say Inzaghi did a bit better than Xavi both because he was happy with a draw and because I think Xavi could have put more energy into the game and he choose to preserved players for El Classico. Everyone is talking about Barca's absences, but Inter had a squad so thing that they had to put on Bellanova! Barca could have overwhelmed them physically with the substitutions, but instead they looked quite ineffective. The only exception was De Jong and Kessie alternating as the third centerback, allowing the rest of the squad higher. but that was also the choice that led to the 3rd Inter goal and nearly got them a 4th one.

I would have gone 3-5-2 with Ansu playing as the 2nd striker and packing the midfielder. Late mid field runs from Dembele on either wings…de jong and Pedri making the late runs… also Xavi needs to make subs early to inject energy and motivation and doing something to alter the oppositions game plan! Ralph and De Jong even try Gavi in the second half to keep up the fight to the end… put in Kasse and Frankie and Feran in the first half to grind and muscle and pick up a couple of yellow cards…then sub them… sometime you got to try something different to win and motivate!
