There may be no better bait to target aggressive bass than a fluke! You can fish it quickly as a topwater, twitch it as a jerkbait, slow fish it like a weightless worm, and even Carolina rig it! The soft jerkbait's ability to adapt puts it in a close of its own! This bait should be in every angler's late season arsenal and today we're going to show you how to adapt it to your lake's conditions.
Most anglers fish a soft jerkbait but few realize its true potential. With a simple hook adjustment this bait can become a topwater. With another adjustment you can suddenly throw it with the lightest of tackle, or the heaviest of gear. It can be Texas rigged in heavy cover, nose hooked in clear water, or be "donkey rigged" and fished around active bass. Most anglers use the Fluke but few know how to keep fishing eating it day after day.
Below you'll find links to the all the baits discussed in the video. We've included our favorite sizes, colors, and rigging components for each. We've also included some of our favorite soft jerkbait combos for the different rigging methods. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

If your fluke is bent or have kinks in it, warm it in a pot of fairly hot water. It comes out perfect most of the time. If it doesn't, warm it again in a bit warmer water. Never throw away bent soft plastics. Stunning channel though, Matt with a very informative video. We are starting to cat h huge fish here in South Africa now. Tight lines, brothers.

Do you still use bait like mussells, squids or chicken? What do you think of fluke vs those kind of baits in terms of success in shore fishing?

@@higherpurpose1212 sorry I should have said lure. I do still use bait but only when I am planning on keeping the fish for dinner. Squid, mussels, and shrimp will catch fish. I also use the smaller sized fluke on a drop shot when I’m bay fishing for sand bass and halibut.

I have been using the StrikeKing caffine shad recently and caught some nice fish. They sink faster than zoom fluke and Yamamoto Dshad. If I wanna fish even faster I would use a Gamakatsu weighted EWG 1/16. The weight on it is so well balanced and make all these brands' fluke shimmy sink like a senko

Great video. Fluke fishing is one of my favorite ways to fish. This year I started fishing my flukes almost exclusively nose rigged. I use a #2 Owner weedless Jungle Wacky hook, Med CPS spring and Caffeine shad. I will pair that with a 6'8" Mojo Spinning rod, lews reel and 15 lbs. braid to 12 lbs. Fluro leader. This is what I have been using for my wacky setup so I can switch on the fly as a co-angler during tournaments between the 2 baits. I really like to let the bait shimmy to the bottom in grass and then give little pops. caught a 5 and broke off an 8 on Chickamauga back in July doing this. I will sometimes take a 1/32 or 1/16th tungsten nail weight and place it in the middle of the body to get a quicker fall in deep water or around bluff walls and the bass will destroy it.

Great video. Another way to keep donkey rig baites separate is to use different leader lines, then you can use your favorite hook in both. I use 12 # mono for the "back" and 10 or 12 # floro on the "front". The mono is more bouyant and will stay up in the water column while the foro sinks more quickly. Also the gamakatsu G locks have a much higher percentage of fish landed to bite ratio than the ewg hooks from my experience. Try them in a 4/0 or 3/0 texas rigged fluke and you will be amazed! G locks are awesome for other soft plastics too, especially beaver and craw types. And thats all the "secrets" I am gonna reveal now 😜😂

You can straighten out a curled fluke. Don't throw em away. Lay them flat on the back and heat them up just a lil bit. Hair dryer on high works. Heat gun. Torch (very carefully) kinked and curled baits aren't junk. If nothing else use it as a drop shot bait or a trailer for spinnerbaits or chatterbaits.

At least your not talkin about Karashi's in this video Matt. 😂 One thing about flukes I think guys overlook which has been deadly for me, is using a heavy fluke like a Caffeine Shad or the like (Megabass with alot of salt etc) and dead stick em through bait balls. Letting it drop out of the bottom of a bait ball always seems to bring good quality fish. Ive said it a zillion times on here but Im a jerkbait nut so flukes are in that wheelhouse. You spoke of donkey riggin. I like to not only use 2 separate baits say a Zoom and a Caffeine Shad for sink rate differences, but put a superline hook in the Caffeine Shad and a lighter hook in the Zoom and move tje hook back as you were just saying. That way Im fishing two levels, one almost topwater and one a foot or two down. Obviously the deeper style can be used for both if they seem to be keying on that bait each cast. Hope Im not sayin everything you cover but Im at 6 min in and in bed about to close my eyes...lol. Wanted to put that here if it could help someone.

Idk why I struggle getting a super fluke properly aligned on an EWG hook, but mine always end up spinning when I twitch it. Maybe it's my line, maybe it's how hard I twitch it, maybe it's the rigging. But no matter what, it spins instead of flicking, twitching, and popping correctly.

@tacticalbassin For the donkey rig.. this is my setup- front is super fluke wit a 3/0 hook. Back 6th sense flush wit a 5/0 hook is that ok?

Don’t throw the kinked ones away. You can either put them in boiling water then lay them flat and they will be usable. Or you can get a heat Gun or lighter and warm up the kinked spot and lay them flat

You can lay them on the deck of the boat in these hot days and they will heat up and work perfect!

I noticed you hold your reel like I do. I kept noticing how much my pinker finger hurt after setting hooks all day. Then I went to catch something I dropped and it tore the tendon from the top of it. Now that it’s healed it really hurts after setting hooks. Not that setting hooks is a bad thing, but I think it’s time to adjust my grip. Just sucks or is impossible depending on the rod. Ohh well, first world problems.

I can never get zoom salty super flukes to dart properly, I swear every pack I get the tails come kinked or the body is bent/warped in some bad position.

If they’re kinked you can drop them into boiling water for a couple of seconds and they will straighten out.
@blind_eye_fishing
@blind_eye_fishing 10 ай бұрын
Or unstead of throwing them away just take a piece of cardboard lay the flukes flat on their backs, pin down with striaght pons to make them flat and straught. Then heat them with a heat gun but not to much to melt them. Leave for a few hours to naturally cool down. Now youre ready to fish them again and theh will be a touch softer with a little better action. You can also use the kinked ones on bladed jigs and spinnerbaits as trailers. Never throw baits out theres always another use for them and or a easy fix to them.

How are you casting a weightless fluke, or 2, on a heavy rod?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 10 ай бұрын
A fluke has more mass (even weightless) than you realize. And that particular heavy rod has enough tip to do it well.

tried throwing that Rhythm Wag with the BKK Chimera on my BFS and I can't cast that thing (Cashion ICON 7' light/KK Zephyr) any suggestions? Anything 1/8 or less won't cast worth a darn, the little whopper plopper or the 77.7 SB cast a country mile

Between the light rod and the mono you've got a TON of stretch. I'd give it another try and just know you have to hit them with everything you have. If that doesn't work, it's going to require a line change.

Copy that, I've got some 7lb Samurai that I bought for it, I've just been experimenting with multiple baits and mostly it doesn't cast as well as spinning gear. I'll change the line and try it

That's 1 thing I like about the googan dart vs the zoom flukes. They come in a hard plastic case so they are all straight . Also you can rig them on owner swimbaiit hook with the screw lock. Owner also makes the swimbaiit hook with a keel weight to fish it deeper
