When should you use Braid? When is fluorocarbon better than mono? What is each line for? Matt answers these questions and many more in today's in-depth look at fishing line. Even if you've made your mind up about your favorite line this video is worth a watch, some new technical lines have hit the market that are bridging the gap between line types.
This video goes in depth about all 3 fishing lines. We ignored copolymer for the sake of time as its really just an "in between" between fluorocarbon and monofilament. All of these different styles of line are important. Each one has a place and will increase your success while fishing. But use the wrong line for the wrong purpose and it will give you endless problems. This year we have the added bonus of "shock leader" which is essentially fluorocarbon that stretches like monofilament.
Because this video ran so long we did not include the portion on tying our favorite knots. We'll release a bonus video tomorrow that shows exactly how to tie a Palomar, double Palomar, San Diego Jam, Double San Diego Jam, and a Blood Knot.
Below is a break down of the different lines and types we use on a regular basis.

A comment about mono and its annoying stretch and memory properties......in the early 70s fishing weedless Johnson spoons and O’neil Weed Wings on Lake Okeechobee was a good way to catch a heavyweight bass. We (Palm Beach area) were Ande “jet” (jet black mono) users which as I recall was about the strongest mono available but its memory issues were particularly bothersome. One clever way to minimize this inconvenience was to “pre-stretch” your line the night before you went fishing. We tied the line to a strong item, walked off about a cast and a half, and pulled the line until it seemed to not have any stretch left......held it there for a predetermined count (10??……speaking of memory!), then wiped the line down, reeled it back on nice and smoothly and completed getting everything ready. Then we all saw that BASS pros taught us that you needed to have at least 10-15 rods with you so the line stretching practice became overbearing and was dropped! Seriously, the pre-stretch did restore more favorable properties, but only for a short time.

I tie braid straight to the spool but not with a single knot. After the arbor knot, I tie a series of half hitches around the spool and cinch it down on itself. The result is that the knots lock everything down and it won’t slip. You have to pull the spool to tie it up but that’s not a big deal.

As always, thorough, informative and concise. THanks! It would be of interest for which types of line you do not use and why. Matt, I have found that electrical tape can also pull loose under certain environmental conditions when using braid direct to spool. I have found a trick that will lock that braid down to the spool every single time...wrap alternating half hitches of braid around the spool. To do this, remove the spool from the reel, tie the braid with your california lock knot and wrap alternating half hitches around each end of the spool. It effectively creates a Chinese finger around the spool where the braid locks into itself. The number of half hitches will depend on line weight. 2-3 wraps then test the line. It locks down so tight that you have to be careful when using some of the thinner finesse spools that you can actually warp the spool because of how much pressure you can put on the line to spool connection. Hope this helps anyone looking for that 100% line to spool connection.

I always use 65lb daiwa j-braid on everything for everything. I know that it would work best to have multiple rods and reels for multiple setups but I only have 2. I know you guys are pretty big braid fans. Personally, I have finally figured out my line preferences. I use 65lb braid on the rod I throw frogs and jigs in cover with, 15-17lb fluorocarbon for trigs, jigs in clear water, spinnerbaits, etc. 10-12 lb fluorocarbon for cranks, 10-12lb mono for poppers and braid on spinning reels -- thanks for the tip for 12lb Sunline SX1 by the way, that stuff is very abrasion resistant for a thin braid and has worked out great for me. For fluorocarbon I've been using Berkley Trilene fluorocarbon because I buy it buy one get one in the spring and the knot strength (on a uni knot anyway) is as good as mono.

when I spool braid I use a rag and double over the line with the rag and put the entire spool under extreme tension and there is no spool live slip, it also helps prevent any backlash past your max casting distance because its so tightly spooled.

Suggestion: Get a wide spool of Gaffer's Tape for the reel backing on braid. It's more expensive than electrical tape, but doesn't break down and get everything sticky on your spool. It tears very easy without needing scissors. Getting a wide spool allows you to easily tear off the exact width for any size reel spool. An added bonus is that you can also use it to store reels that are already spooled with line. I just tape down the end of the line on the spool with a small piece. The next time you use that reel, you can just pull off that piece of tape and stick it on the rod just below the hook keeper. It can be reused to store the spool multiple times as it was designed to be put down and taken up while retaining it's adhesive properties, but not leave behind residue on the rod or the line.

Love all the videos!!! Thanks for putting in the time and effort. Quick question: I'm putting together a baitcasting combo for finesse (ned, neco, Texas) and smaller topwater (whopper plopper, poppers, jitter bugs) on a 7' MH. What line do you recommend? Braid to mono or straight fluro? Also must note that there are pike and Muskie in the Canadian waters I fish 🤔🤔 Thanks, cheers!!!!

I’m thinking I might pick up some of that Floro for super clear waters though. Western Wa has a lot of lakes with 20+ ft vis and finicky smallies

Thanks to one of your past videos on the subject I'm now exclusively a braid to mono (Pline flouro coated mono). I love it. I can't imagine using all mono. I get so few bird nests compared to mono. And I get so much more time out of braid. I can use the same line for a few months or more. And one small spool of leader will last me forever. And I LOVE the blood knot. I still struggle tying that fucking knot though. When ever I go to close it...not sure what I'm doing wrong. I pull the tags. Pull the main lines. And maybe 7 out of ten times they just pull apart. But when it works it's unbelievable. I've snagged crap and had to break my line and it's NEVER the blood knot that breaks. Thanks as always.

(With the knot part) That's like me, but with the uni-knot. Sometimes, as I am tightening up the knot, there ends up being this small loop at the top of the knot, it looks awful, and I'm sure it would end in disaster if I just kept it like that. So I always redo it if I see that loop.

So how long should this mono leader be and what lb test
@AmeriFanPicker
@AmeriFanPicker 10 ай бұрын
@@stephen2634 I usually do 40lb braid to about 6’ of 8 or 10lb mono. Sometimes 12 sometimes 6. But mostly on 40 I do 8 or ten. 50lb I’d do 12-15 lb but I don’t do that much. Frankly lately I’m more a spinning real guy and fishing for smaller stuff crappie etc. On that rig I mostly do 20lb braid to 6lb mono.

I use poly for a lot of treble hook applications because you get the best of both worlds. I do use traditional mono on a few set ups as well (certain jerk baits and for open-water froggin'). Braid is a real niche line for me, but does get used. I rarely use a leader except on spinning set ups. I'm not opposed to them, but if I have enough reels to make a dedicated setup, why not?

I agree with about everything you said except one thing..When tying braid straight to the spool you said that you use 12 inches of electrical tape for the backing to avoid slipping..DO NOT use that much because you are adding way to much weight to your spool..You are defeating the purpose of having a MGL Spool..Every gram of weight on the spool counts tremendously and hurts your casting distance..The ported MGL spools are ported to reduce the weight of the spool and reduce the inertia and increase the start up speed of the spool to get longer casts..With 12 inches of electric tape you no longer have a MGL spool..Use Mono or Flouro always and you only need about 1/16” thick of that..Hope you take my advice..You can use the tape but if so id use just enough to go around maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of the spool..It’s not necessary to cover the whole spool

Yes, you absolutely dont have to use that much tape!. A piece the size of your thumbnail is all you need.

Haven't tried sunline assassin, but I do have sunline FC crankbait line, in 14lb and that stuff is STRONG!! was useing a jerkbait, caught a Channel Catfish right on the lip, don't know if he bit it or accidentally hooked him , but that line did not break and highly recommend real resistant 👍

Yo Allen, 20 ib. fluorocarbon is very good for bank fishing. And yes, I believed you won't get the best casting & performance with heavier line, but as I been testing over and over with 20 pound line from the shore, I can fish extremely shallow dirty water and thick cover without too many problem. If my crankbait get stuck, I can pull to bend those treble out and get my lure back, catch alot of big bass not to worry my line breaking off, even if I tied a bad knot with the right amount of drag pressure. I'm an more experienced fisherman on bank than on the boat & I just hoping you guys are not overlooking the benefit of heavier mainline on an conventional baitcasting reel.
