Finding the correct brightness on your red do,t just takes a little time and practice in lighted situations and in dark situations. Double checking your red dot brightness to see what you can work with best. Some compromise with the settings, will allow you to keep it at a level to operate in both light and dark.
@flinchfu3 жыл бұрын
If you have two good eyes, you can try blacking them out with electrical tape, or a black bottle cap or whatever works (try to stay off the glass if possible). Your aiming eye sees the dot in an opaque black void, and your other eye sees down range as your brain puts the images together. It's tricky, if you can control which eye is more dominant at a time, it's a great idea. I have my dot set on three. I can put the dot on a lamp post at night then put it directly on the blazing lamp bulb just the same. Nothing can out-shine the dot because the eye viewing the sight only sees black contrast behind it. May not be for everyone but I've found helpful for me... AND I can leave my dot on 3 for months at a time as it's such a dim setting. Always on...
@flinchfu3 жыл бұрын
I will say it's easy to screw up parallax or cross your eyes that way but I don't really use mine as a primary optic or precision because it piggy-backs a 4-12x scope. It works better on smaller-framed red dot sights as they don't obstruct your off eye as much and it's easier to focus on the correct depth of field quickly.
@flinchfu3 жыл бұрын
Btw, that lamp post is in our yard and we don't have visible neighbors. The rifle is also clear.

I remember when lasers were the rage a couple of decades ago (I even put red laser CT grips on my S&W 5906), but now pistol laser sights seem almost relegated to the has-been heap of history. I don't think red dots will wind up the same way. I do want back-up irons on a rifle or pistol that has a red dot, because irons don't stop working.

Yeah so this almost answered the exact question I was looking for on KZfaq. I plan on using a flashlight for home defense and wanted to make sure I account for the right brightness, BUT I was wanting to know what’s better for keeping the brightness at the correct level all night for the SRO or the RMR type 2? I want to be able to pick it up and not have to adjust the brightness or anything complicated with adjusting after it went to sleep mode or whatever.
@TacticalRifleman Жыл бұрын
Sorry, I took ALL the RMRs and my SRO off my pistols. I run the Vulcan reticle on ALL my pistols and currently it is only available in Holosun optics. I am hoping Trijicon will offer something similar soon, as the SOF guys really want it in a USA made optic.

It seems to me if it is set up for you to see in the daytime and you can hit your target accurately, then you should be able to shoot the same at night. The key thing though is getting used to what you see at night because the basics don't change that much if any at night. Getting used to the differences is the biggest hurdle.

Would like to hear your take on red dot vs green dot with low light situations. Some people claim because they have astigmatism that they see the green better. I have astigmatism and I see red (on my pistol) and green (on my rifle) fairly equal. The green dot feels easier to look at on the eyes. So kinda torn if I should convert all my dots to green or save that money and buy other gear/ammo I don’t have yet.
@TacticalRifleman Жыл бұрын
Zero actual difference scientifically. It comes down to personal preference
@iamrick3821 Жыл бұрын
@@TacticalRifleman In your experience, is the red dot easier to pick up when you turn your light on or the green? Thanks for the info

Depends on background and several other factors... example: in a field of tall green grass, Red would show up faster. Again, it mostly comes down to personal preference.

@@TacticalRifleman Yes (well kind of, legally depends on the country) but are there downsides to it, especially in regards to speed (probably could go faster if there was a spring and the stock would open as soon it clears the holster which leads to other things that may or may not be problematic) ? Gotta stir the pot on this one Karl. If memory serves, you've told us before that you've never had to use a pistol in combat to shoot someone. A red dot may be objectively better than iron sights on your pistol, but when's good enough and how much better is it really and can we test that? It...kinda seems like you're having a pretty bad day already if you're going for your pistol, and the dot could either be a help, or a major hindrance if it's autoshut off?
@sstormwolf3 жыл бұрын
This isn't a combat situation. He's talking about edc/home defense. You're stirring an empty pot. You're not geared nor will you have the time to throw on more than -maybe- a rig or carrier. Personally, I'll grab the pistol and start moving. A pistol is commonly kept next to the bed. Auto brightness can be a pain, another instance where they screw up is when you're in a dark area looking out into a bright area. Good luck finding that dot. Trijicon's RMR seems to somehow look ahead as well as up. It certainly performs leagues better than the Holosun units with auto brightness.

This may be a good time to suggest small LED lights planted around the house in dark spots which will turn on with a switch, but not turned on with normal lights. For the price of small LED bulbs, wiring, and a few switches...all those nice dark hiding spots suddenly are bright spotlights shining down on Chad as he tries to eat all the chocolate covered coffee beans while everyone else is sleeping. But honestly, just chocolate cover some 9mm 147gr and the problem will take care of itself.
