The 1970s showed that, tactically, ideas could take football almost anywhere. It was an intoxicating time when the beautiful game truly became just that.

Love this series, but two things that probably got cut but should be mentioned from the 1978 cup: Argentina-Peru game and Cruyff not playing in 1978 are key factors too.

Yes, if Cruyff hadn't been kidnaped in his own house in Barcelona, maybe the Netherlands could have won that final, that they almost won it anyway, with a shot in the post in the last minute.
@pritapp788

They did another video on the politics and background of 1978 WC. As for the final, in Europe there is selective amnesia about the game and tendency to recall just the header that hit the post (Resenbrink I think), ignoring the fact that Argentina dominated that final, created far more chances than the Dutch and hit woodwork too.

This was the era when England got left behind (tactically and technically) by the other top nations. We've not managed to bridge the gap since. Not qualifying for the 74 and 78 world cups meant we never got to play against the like of Germany, Brazil and Holland from that era. If we'd played them at a World Cup maybe we'd have been influenced by their approach and not gone down the one dimensional, physical route that characterised English football during the 80's.
@MasterAppels
@MasterAppels 7 жыл бұрын
I would agree that they've been lagging tactically, but not technically. England had some great players in every recent decade who were let down by coaches (and the FA). Just look at the Golden Generation; they could have played many different types of football - the players were that good.

Gotta love how british people loves to say that 78's Cup was fixed (yeah, it really was) but says ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the bizarre show that 66's Cup was to give England it's trophy. (And this is coming from a Brazilian) This little detail aside, great video as always! Great job!

Great breakdown. BUT I truly believe the best team in the 1974 World Cup was easily Gorski's White Eagles. The most electric, fast attacking team around. Top scorer Lato. Only for West Germany to play a match that shouldn't have been played in swamp conditions. Beckenbauer himself said the best team by far was Poland and they only won because West Germany were literally kicking the ball from puddle to puddle. Sadly the forgotten wonder team.

finally, someone who understands how Italy played in 1970, that Valcareggi did not play a five-man defence...Italy showed plenty of attacking initiative in certain games but, as you say, there were times they showed too much caution...the weakness with the Italian strategy was that their man-marking system was too rigid and Brazil exposed this in the second half with Jairzinho crossing to the left, dragging Facchetti with him...this left a huge gap in the left side which Carlos Alberto moved into...Zagallo also noted they were not marking Gerson in midfield so at half time he told his players to give the ball to Gerson as much as possible...Gerson scored the second and set up the third

Although the Dutch team played the by far most attractive football in 1974, I think it's bit to giving the german team only 15s of speech. You didn't even show their line-up. That's a bit unfair for maybe the best german team ever.

One can't say a team was better because it had two legends playing for it. People will remember the likes of Lahm, Klose & Neuer from 2014. 2014 team had much more quality all round too. & they were the strongest team in the competition.

Big JellyEel Yes they were the strongest team in the competition. But because there was no great team that year. Argentina barely won their games if it wasn't for Messi's last minute goals. France, Spain, Brazil, every team was underachieving. In 1974 Germany beat the best Dutch team they might ever have been.
@JaleelBeig
@JaleelBeig 7 жыл бұрын
Battist Oberhößel exactly my point the Oranje were the best team of 74 & Germany's best team is 14. The Dutch were beaten because Germans outsmarted them, but 2014 team was great overall. We're pretty nostalgic about things and it's probably we remember Germany's 74 as greatest team ever but by time, when memories of '14 age up, pretty sure we shall all have the same nostalgia about 14.

Rivera was the better player at the time, BO winner in 1969 I believe. It was criminal to pick Mazzola over him. As for Totti and ADP, they were terrific when played together for Italy, but Trapattoni was way too cowardly to do that often.

I have to take issue with anyone who states Brazil couldn't have been beaten. Its very possible the England side of that year would have run them very very close. No arguments that Brazil of 1970 are the best side I've seen but Brazil of 1982 ran them a very close second and look were they got.

In my opinion, it wasn´t like that, yes Maradona was fucking brilliant in that tournament, and the best player by far, but the other players in the team were all pretty good, of course, not in the level of Maradona, but during the tournament the whole team played very well, it wasn´t just ¨pass it to Diego and let him score¨ (except the second goal against England).

Brilliant, and those were times when the defenses were based on man marking, and the tackles were done with both feet. Pele was a perfect player who could release the ball quick with an amazing pass accuracy, and either could hold and dribble while looking for a player in a better position.. Pele was far better than Maradona in my opinion. Diego couldn't play in modern soccer, as his only great skill relayed on dribbling.

Lisand Leyra I saw Maradona in a charity match a few years ago and I was shocked at how good his passing was, seeing that you mostly hear about his dribbling. I can only imagine how good his passing went with his great dribbling when he played. Looking at some of his numbers, you can clearly see that he wasn't the same type of player as Pele, like some people think.
