Marcelo Bielsa is one of the most exciting, innovative coaches in world football and his brand of attacking possession-based football, played with a high tempo and often based on a 3-3-1-3 formation, has influenced managers like Pep Guardiola, Mauricio Pochettino, and Diego Simeone. In this video, we explore his preferred setup.

Bielsa isn't a manager who will win lots of trophies. He does weird and wacky things that often sabotage himself. But he has the balls to try something new and lots of the top managers watch him try things out before they do it. Talk to most spanish or south american coaches and they will all have something to say about his tactics. They may call him crazy, but Bielsa made them think more deeply. Without him, football wouldn't develop as fast as it does.

How does football develop 'fast'? It's one of the slowest adapting and introverted sports around, only to act like one is a genius if a coach looks outside those boundaries, like Southgat

Bielsa got Chile, an average national time until then, to the second place of the south american WC qualifiers, probably the hardest of them all! Quite an achievement! And his teams, when adapted to his coaching, are pure adrenaline! A joy to watch! Totally underrated because he truly deserved to coach one of the biggest teams in the world. At this age probably he wont do that

Bielsa is the master of the pressing style. The high intensity press from Bielsa has inspired countless managers like pochetino, Simeone, Guardiola, Sampaoli, etc. Football needs people like Bielsa.

One of the most influential coaches of our era. He alone is the only coach who still receives apologetic letters by his “disciples” for failing to implement his system correctly. He gave the nation of Chile an identity and it came to fruition when they won the two Copa Americas with Sampaoli. And let’s not forget what Bielsa’s Bilbao did to Ferguson’s United in the Europa League. We would not have Guardiola, Pochettino, Sampaoli, etc. without this crazy genius tactician. One of his famous quotes best describes him “We defend by attacking.” He definitely let them “hang” on the pitch.

Unrrated? The praise of Bielsa doesn't match his achievements. He is overrated, he said it himself while was going down in the french league table from 1st to 5th en 3 months w/OM. He even said his methods don't work at long term and the media did boost his ego. Srsly.

True, let's be honest anything is an improvement on Heckingbottom. I have heard he is a serial loser but that being he hasn't been able to win the Europa League final, Copa Del Rey final and the World Cup so I think the championship is easier to do well in than them competitions. Hopefully we give him some time to do his own thing and allow him free rein

He is a great manager. But in order for him to perform at his best, he needs total control. That's why he is very careful at choosing the teams that will allowe him to work without team managment or famous players getting in the way. I think this is the reason behind his failure with Argentina during the first round of 2002 world cup.

I found this channel about a week ago and I'd say I've watched nearly every video. It's exactly what I was looking for. A breakdown of tactics in a smart and easy way. The editing is superb as well. The fact that you haven't over 1 million views per video is depressing. We need to educate even the casual fan. Any chance you could do a breakdown of Roy Keane and his footballing ability and attributes? I've heard enough about his personality and personal life. I watched him religiously as a kid (heavily influenced by my father) but I can't put into context his ability. Please me and my father would be very appreciative. Thank you again for a superb channel 👌👌🐐🐐

I love these systems, and in particular the use of players 'out of position'. In much of football, this is frowned upon, but in the right system, it can be a stroke of genius. I love the 'whirlwind' attack that is created when you set a system up like this. The philosophy seems to not be 'this is your role, so you must stick to it', but rather to say, 'this is your area of the pitch, so attack it.' This creates unpredictability because the play is not defined by the roles of players (and therefore you can predict what they are trying to do), but by where they are likely to operate, which isn't as useful to the opposition as knowing what they are likely to do. This further enhanced by having players 'out of position', so where you might expect a certain kind of player, you in fact get another type.

Absolutely loved it! I was the only one requesting for it for almost 2 months now. Finally it's here. Yes, a small tactical video won't do justice to him. So please, I am waiting for a Whiteboard Extra - Podcast dedicated to this. Please explain the "Enganche" role in detail. Also how does he get to have 7 players to defend when they don't have the possession and 6 players in attack while they DO have the ball. Also, why isn't he as successful as many other coaches who actually took inspiration from his ideas and philosophy? What's missing? Thanks, in advance.

MYNAMEISMYNAME I think I can answer number 7. A Regista!
@targetthyself
@targetthyself 6 жыл бұрын
The Regista has too much positional freedom. He'll move into space similar to the Engache in attack. even with hold position he'll still allow too much space in behind him. It's a supremely difficult formation to make work, I got it to work at A.C Milan by using a Libero in place of the holding mid. Which gave me enough defensive stability and the DLP I needed to move the ball correctly. As far as FM goes I feel like the game has it as best as you'll get. In defense the system is a 5-1-3-1 and in transition it morphs out into a 3--3-1-3... kinda. Maybe this year we'll get more tools to make this kinda system work better.
@danfernandes5607
@danfernandes5607 6 жыл бұрын
MYNAMEISMYNAME I was doing it in 08/09 save, then with his Athletic side. 3 CB. 4 MF, effectively a wide diamond and then 3 FW, but push the two wide forwards out to the touch line. A diamond 343 but the front 3 are spread out. Or you can do the same with a flat 4 instead of a diamond. Easily the best formation I ever done. The spacing and pressing was too good.

It's funny how LVG, Bielsa, Klopp and Guardiola all have this fundamental style that the team can surpass the individual to the extreme. Everyone has their roles, movements and instructions all pre planned, and very little is off the cuff. The extreme other end is Arsene Wenger where you feel nothing is organised or planned. The very basics and that about it.

I had the pleasure to watch Argentinas WC-qualifiers to the 2002 world cup. Marcelo Bielsa was the coach and Argentina probably had its best team in the post-Maradona era. The way they played was amazing. I have never seen anything like it. First of all, just so that people understand, the player with the ball is the only one standing still, while all the other players (all of them) run forward, essentially becoming a passing alternative forward. And if that was not enough, the player with the ball usually only made one or two touches before passing the ball forward. This in of itself created a firce speed on theire side. And the Argentina stars handled it very well. Dominating in the qualifiers to the WC. The problem happende however at the world cup itself. In South America Argentina usually met teams that would usually attack. But what happens when you meet a European team fully based on defense? You suddenly run into problems. And then and there, Argentina might have played well, but got the worst result in a WC for decades. Not even going passed the Group stage. Tragic really.

Great explanation, but you should've used the chilean national team as the example, as that was the one team that actually played his tactics to full potential. He needs players with extremely high stamina and resistance and he found that in the likes of Vidal, Alexis, Medel, Isla, etc. who grew within his system.

Lille will come around I watch all of their games so far this season.... the players are still adapting to the system, they played brillantly in their second game, Defensively they seem to struggle a bit, But i'm confident Bielsa will have them sorted and they will probably finish top 6 this season... In Luiz Araujo, Benzia, El Ghazi, De Preville, and Ezequiel Ponce they have a very young and entertaining attack, on there day these guys will play some of the most entertaining attacking football in Ligue 1

Would be interesting to see him at a team such as Celtic or Olympiakos who win their league easily - maybe he would ease off or rotate his squad more for the easier games and still have a fit 1st XI at April/May...

if you want to see how great Bielsa is, watch Athletic Bilbao vs Barcelona in 2011. This was probably the match where both managers were more influential than the players on the pitch

Wales should play with a 3-3-1-3 formation, Bale as the enganche, Vokes, Robson Kanu, and Ramsey up top, Neil Taylor, Chris gunther as the wing backs, Joe Allen maybe as the screening midfielder, James Chester, Ashley Williams, and Davies as centre backs

If you don't have it in the works already, how about a Tactics Explained for Zinedine Zidane? He's done an incredible job since taking over for Rafa and he's showing Florentino Perez that Madrid don't need Galacticos signings every year to win the Champions League. You just need to define player roles and manage.

Bielsa's tactic was genius since he could destroy if the opposite team played a 4-4-2 . But I think it's kinda vulnerable . First of all against a 4-5-1 , the opposing team will have an attacking disadvantage , but they could block the heart of the system , the central midfielder . And then his tactic is also kinda vulnerable against a 4-3-3 .
