Pogi's bottle attack was great. Pogi's second attack with Jonas gripping the wheel was even better. When Remco and Carapaz came in with them at the line it just kept getting better. We're in for a great July 🦋

Ah, one more thing: observing Remco - more precisely his attitude - and I'm very pleased. The young gun, who was overly cocky at times in the past 24 months, seems to be a lot more grounded. This could be the right recipe for bigger successes - not at this year's TdF, but later.

Chris, really excellent job figuring out how Carapaz and Remco came out of the chasing pack. Everybody else is like “somehow Remco and Carapaz is in between the groups” and you are the only one that looked through this frame by frame and figured out that Remco and Carapaz came out at the top of the climb. This is why we come to you for race analysis. You are the only one that does the work to figure out these details.

Very well riding by Visma-LAB: 1) everybody did his part today and saved energy when the job was done. 2) They worked as a team (inspired by the book Legacy by James Kesrr) 3) they were in front not to get the group in the front back, but to have the distance 4) both times they were in position at the start of the hard climb, knowing it was going to be small. Finally: Impressive how Vingegaard is riding, considering the crash earlier this year.

When you have the yellow jersey, it's also a huge target marked in yellow for you. In a 4 horse race like this, and the quality of the field, it may not be the wisest to get yellow so early in the race. It's is a game of fox and hounds. Tadej may not want to be the "fox" so early in the Tour.

Great summary of an exciting stage. Looks like Vingegaard was sandbagging everyone at least a bit. He looks like he has the legs early but it’s a long 3 weeks and he did miss some training. Pogacar was on the offensive but at the end it looked like he didn’t want yellow just yet. Be interesting to see if it changes UAE strategy if he’s still in yellow at the end of the day tomorrow. It was Evenepoel that was spectacular on this stage. It looked like he was dropped a couple of times but he just magically reappeared with the leaders when it counted. Great stage.

I’m not tactician, but I feel that this has always been the plan for UAE. That’s why they brought all the climbers. Today They are testing JV. They are just testing the team, only Jonas could hold his wheel. In the mountains I feel that UAE is gonna consummate this plan and do to JV what jumbo Visma did to TP. Isolate and attack. Visma can no longer cover that attack. It’s only a matter of time till JV can’t hold it. Remco is remco. He’s gonna keep doing what he’s doing fall out of the favorites. I was surprised about Primoz, wasn’t expecting that

And if that are your theory then you too should have many hours of satisfying hours watching if that comes through, right? That are part of the beauty of this race. MANY theories can be had but only reality of each stage show how that theory hold up. Last 2-3 years have been best Tdf´s in my memory and this years first two stages have been best start stages in TdF history in my opinion (NEVER another 1st stage TT again in my opinion). That Pogocar had heightened Covid values 2 weeks before the start and Jonas had his awful crash in April makes these two first stages even more impressive for both. There are no givens. Only time will tell if both reach Paris.

They hardly worked together. Jonas did the bare minimum to not look completely soft and come under fire from fans (has already happened before) or worse, piss Tadej off enough for him to comment post-race. Jonas’s legs were just fine to contribute to a meaningful rotation. He just never does. Maybe he’s smarter tactically over 3 weeks, but he’s boring and irritating to watch sometimes. Jonas is passive and sheepish (always looking over his shoulder; practically paranoid) and relies on team guidance vs. instinct and full-send commitment. He “pulled” today to “save face”. Tadej was clearly not happy with Jonas’s initial reluctance to pull at all.

Well I'm glad Pogacar has the Yellow Jersey, but today's stage was not a hard finish to drop Vingegaard enough so of course he can follow Pogacar up the 3rd category climbs and then flat the rest of the way. No doubt Vingegaard has form right now on flat roads and little climbs, but Pogacar attacking made no sense to me cause it was flat after he attacked like how is he gonna gain time on Vingegaard 😂 I think we need to see how Vingegaard does up an actual mountain finish and can he not get dropped from Pogacar up a mountain. Other than that I'm glad it worked out either way but he could have saved energy since it was a flat finish and he wasn't gonna lose Vingegaard.🤨🦋🦋

Don’t let some of the people hear you say this. They will try and tell you that Jonas staying on Pogs wheel after a 5 second acceleration (watch the video, it’s literally 5 seconds before they go right and left under the arches) means that Jonas winning the tour is a forgone conclusion. Now don’t get me wrong, this shows some form from both as they did manage to gap everyone but Carapaz (lol 😂.. Carapaz) but this was such a short effort and these guys had a pretty easy day up to this point. Glad to see Jonas, Pog, and Remco showing form. I don't think TP even start to get serious. He was just diping his toe in the water to give it a little look. Way too much is being read into this short, medium degree climb..

But based on last 2 tours and the last Vuelta, Jonas typically peaks and excels in the later half of the tour where the big mountain stages are and can drop Pog. Why wouldn't UAE want to put as much time as they can into a compromised Jonas on a stage that supposedly should have favoured Pog? I think UAE tried and did the best they could, but Jonas and Visma were able to match them. I may be wrong, but I think Visma and Jonas will conserve energy and do just what they need to do in the first half of the tour to stay close, and then dominate in the latter mountain stages.

Chris, I’m confused. Why on stage 3 is Carapaz in yellow with same time. Also, why is Jonas same time as Remco and Tadej when he crossed not in the same group many seconds behind? Is this because of the crash rule , or do you need to be in the crash to benefit? Thx

My heart wants Primoz to win but it looked bad today. Did he get any benefit from saving energy in the remnants of the peloton that might pay back the 21 seconds? It's only 2 days until the Galibier. I'm guessing that will sort out what's what.

His doms were in position but he wasn't. The guy should know he must be riding no less than 7th wheel coming into the final climb. He used some excuse about bad legs but no one is buying it....just sloppy riding. He had to work to get himself back to both hindley and vlasov. Not going to cut it with the quality in the field this year. I go as far to say he'll be riding for stages and his doms this year. Hindley or vlasov will be leader after stage 4

@Chris Horner, stage 4 do you agree this stage should've finished on the mountain with the cars waiting down the climb? It's now 16km descending before the finish, which seems to me to be extremely dangerous, with GC candidates taking extreme risks to descend?

Thanks Chris great review as always from you. Regarding the stellar ride by Richard Carapaz, it’s likely that a major motivation is he is sticking up two fingers in the face of the Ecuadorian cycling federation who inexplicably left him out of the Ecuadorian cycling team for the upcoming Olympics in Paris. Based on performance he should easily have been on the team but it seems that somebody in Ecuador has a grudge. As to Jonas it was a marvellous day but as Jonas himself noted having only been back on the bike for 6 weeks after 2.5 months off the bike caution is warranted.

Was Abrahamsen riding like a knucklehead? He disobeyed his boss and took the early sprint because he wanted a green jersey. The green jersey was not the teamplan, the plan was sampling polkadotpoints to keep the polkadotjersey as deep as possible into the tour. Did that sprint cost some seconds in the final climb? If he had dropped back less than 20 seconds he could have had a chance going for stage victory. Jonas Abrahamsen was impressive, and he might be the largest muscleman ever to hold the polkadotjersey for several days. Tadej, Wout and Mathieu will have some competition in the classics.

Another great recap. Think Adam Yates shouldn't touch his earpiece just before Tadej's move, possible sign for Jonas to move. Garrett, One thing to note my view had a black section at the bottom so could not see the top items which were being flagged.

Vingegaard very happy that Pogi could not drop him in spite of Pogi's signature explosive move. Even before Vingegaard's crash Visma thought stage 2 was as made for Pogi and expected to lose time. We have to believe UAE did so too. Also, once again UAE were spread out at the start of the critical climbs while Visma was better organised. One can argue Visma has to be as the team is stretched "thin" compared to UAE - but still. No room for complacency at UAE with Vingegaard back and looking strong. Next GC stop; stage 4.

Pogi is an exceptional rider, and he has a strong team. Jonas is better than I thought (considering his injuries), but his team is not that strong. What happened to Remco when giving interviews??? He used to be very cocky, not anymore. No more blunt statements. Being humble. Did he follow media training? I kinda miss it already. Journalists are trying, and he simply replies the top 5 in the general classification, and a stage win is the goal.
