About 16 years ago we watched the movie together. Near the ending my mom went to the kitchen with watering eyes. I could see both of my sisters are crying too. And for the first time in my life I saw my father almost cried. The bond of family is the strongest and we all could feel it. Both of my parents are now gone and my sisters have their own lives now, but that memory of everday evening will always be in my heart.

This song is reminding of my grandpa, he fought for South Korea in the Korean War and took his family to America in the 80's. He had a third bout with cancer that came back recently and he had already been battling some ailments and he passed away on May 22nd at the age of 85, so he got to live a long life. I was going to see him the day after on Tuesday, I was at my classes on Monday, but didn't realize the scope of his sickness. I would've done anything to have had the chance to say goodbye to the man that taught me how to fish, took me on trips to the beach, lake, river, wherever. His passing didn't hit me until now even after his funeral when I remembered the trips that we took, and the life events that he was at, but when he was lively and healthy, just remembering him saying my name, or laughing and smiling around our family, but recently he wasn't able to do that, but at least I get to take solace that his pain's gone, but I regret not being able to say goodbye... I wish he got to see a reunified Korea in his lifetime, its what he fought for.

I suspect Americans are likely to be more emotionally open to 'both' sides of a story if it is a story which, as depicted, they were not directly themselves involved in. That was one of the really powerful aspects of foreign film. When we remove our own national egotism from the equation, we tend to be more open to the humanity of other peoples and nations.

Grand Inquisitor Although I agree with your comment, we were directly involved in this war. 36,000 of our young men died fighting so that a people could remain free from communist tyranny. Koreans are damn good fighters, I respect them greatly. My uncle served in Vietnam as a door gunner on a Huey. He told me the Vietcong were scared of the Korean ROK Marines cause they were so badass. The NVA even refused to fight them, telling their troops "Do not engage the Koreans unless victory is certain." Their sectors were always secure and the NVA would run away from a village if they were approaching. If we fought the war like them we would have won.

(WARNING, this comment contains spoilers) Something interesting about this film is that, nearing the end, the ones who took everything Jin Tae loved away from him were not the ones from "the other country" (North Korea), but those from his own country (the ultranationalists and the army), thus making him defect to seek revenge. It was a story about true love, but many people just watched an insane amount of violence and cruelty.

1st movie ever in my life to teach me a great lesson about why "WAR" should be avoided at all costs. R.I.P for all soldiers that have died in a futile war across the world.

I first time watched this movie in 2008 ,I was crying too. This is different compared to saving private Ryan. This is about a family, emotion, and relationships.

en10 this is the best song you ever uploaded! honestly i think this song means that if you lose someone close to you, you'll always find someone new. so if you feel lonely your not. Deep down in your heart someone loves and cares for you, and i also think it means that dont bring war, bring peace.

This is one of my favourite war movies of all time. Dont get me wrong Saving Private Ryan was great but there's something about this movie that brought a tear in my eye. The Korean war or what some people call it the 'the forgotten war' is one of the most brutal wars since WW1, WW2 and the Vietnam war. War can change a man as this was shown in this movie as an innocent man can turn into a emotionless killer. One day hopefully in my lifetime I do love to see the two Korea's be reunited into one as a prosperous and free nation. From a movie fan here in the UK.

@@chungwoolee5186 Your welcome my friend. One day I would love to visit South Korea. During the last battle scene in this movie did it happen in real life or was it fictional? I was wondering whether the casualty numbers during the Korean war was really 3 million civilians and 2 million troops killed or not because I fear it could be higher then those numbers.

The things that I love about this movie is the brutality shown from both sides as neither were perfect. From the beginning the South Korean army was getting desperate as they forced anyone between the ages of 18 to 30 to be reinforced against their will. When Jin Tae and Jin Seok were sent to the front, there was a scene when a South Korean soldier burning dead North Koreans instead of burying them. Jin Tae was willing to do anything in order to send his brother home even if it means risking his own life. All that went in vain as the South Korean militia ending up killing his Fiancee and many other innocent people just because they were suspected communists.

Nowadays, when you think of the two Koreas, it makes you think that Korea was always separated by two entirely different countries. But, this beautiful song makes me feel that Korea was never supposed to be split. but, yet, it was just like the way a heart breaks, painful and desiring to be put back together again. In a way, Taegukgi not only tells about the Korean war, but more. It tells us about one country that was united was split, and how devastating it really was.
