What he's demonstrating has little to do with fighting or self defense. In the 60s TKD masters wouldn't give you a blackbelt in tkd without testing for a blackbelt in Hapkido at the same time. Hapkido is a complete art with all the joint locks ,throws ,submissions etc.

Tae kwon do is awesome. You learn restraint while gaining strength and flexibility. No one should ever attempt to discredit it as a martial art despite the Olympic style taught. I learned the military style initially taught before it got watered-down.

@M5A1 Stuart many might be surprised at how many MMMA trainers use striking from taekwondo. you will hear many professionals in the fight game tell you that taekwondo has superior striking when compared to other traditonal martial arts they often combine it with Western boxing

I loved when I was matched up with taekwondo opponents in tournaments. They were some of the easiest to beat. Sure there various forms are great for show with all the spins and ariel gymnastics however in practicality it has its flaws. Especially in the higher level compatitions that I was in. That was my personal experience at least; however, I can only speak for myself.

@Ronin Mantis lol I mean absolutely no disrespect to anyone reading this that might be tkd. I was trained old school ways so respect honor integrety are huge to me something I think the majority of Americans don't fully understand unless they study martial arts and the military. ( I left my martial arts career to become a member of the t US Army deployed twice injured once in Iraq. they get the concept but thats about it. any way the tkd guys spar the same way all the time it trips me out. they hop hop hop shuffle feet shuffle feet hop hop hop shuffle fit then kick and usually at the same time. it's kinda funny ona respectful brotherly like teasing . no matter where I was east coast west coast always the same lil shuffle dance. that burns up alot of energy I would think

@Ronin Mantis there wasn't a lot and oddly after doing it for awhile and getting into the big tournaments where they started following us and our ranks and points I started noticing it was the same group of people all the time most of us became good friends. ironically one of my best friends I was closest to was a girl and she represented her dad's tkd school. we were both black belts and always cheering each other on. we were both really good and then believe it or not this one open tournament we were in matched us up against each other. I was freaking out yelling at my coach they can't do that boy against a girl friends or not so he went and questioned the host of the event and sure enough some how they did it and it was gonna count as a legit fight. I was squared of with her, she was trying not to laugh and then the ref said go. I didn't know what to do I kept looking at my coach. I can't hit her she's a girl ( keep in mind I was really young to be at that level) and I liked her liked her more then just friends ) then wack I was in the tornado of death (tkd kick zone) smack smack ref was like point point then my coach was like you better figure something out your gf is kicking your ass I looked at her she had the biggest smile and I was like on hell no and barely got the win. man I miss her michelle hill 2nd degree her dad was a big time tkd champ and so was her brother. eventually her dad invited me to train at his school for free so me n her could hang out and I guess change it up for his other students. I miss those days. I lived slept ate and drank martial arts 24 7 for years then I had a kid and it all came to a grinding halt. but to answer you kinda question the majority of competitors were mostly kung fu of one variety or another.
Ronin Mantis
Ronin Mantis 27 күн бұрын
@Timothy May I agree with you. Pure TKD is easier to spar/fight with than some of the other styles. My comment was meant that in the Midwest many tournaments are for TKD only. Occassionally they will allow a demo from another style, but never a sparring match. As always it depends upon where you live. :-)
Timothy May
Timothy May Ай бұрын
@Ronin Mantis the matches I was speaking of all happened on the East Coast I was out of Virginia Beach Virginia but I completed up and down the East Coast I didn't get to the West Coast until way later when I got my Arizona regional title. I've gotten a lot of comments about my opinion like I said that was just my opinion and I can go into detail of what I'm talking about taekwondo's fault is that it's 80% feet 20% hands and a good fighter who's smart in the head will know not to stay in their opponents killzone which taekwondo would be on the outside so a good fighter will keep the fight on the inside and I was strong on the inside and fast. I was a good combination of 50/50 cuz I started with Wing Chun then I went into taekwondo for just a small amount of time and then on to Shaolin kenpo where I stayed for the remainder of my time in martial arts and got my black belt. I stuck with open tournaments because I was a versatile fighter I didn't have one style and most of the people I competed against were the same but anyway the taekwondo part when they try to do their spinning kicks and stuff they have to drop their shoulder in order to make the rotation around the back for the strike that leaves you about .05 seconds of them being absolutely vulnerable it doesn't sound like a lot of time but when you're at that level of competition that's a lot of time so the main thing was just that when you saw the shoulder drop and they started the rotation you would shoot in and strike before they could get out of the spin or if they were doing an aerial kicked like the jumping 360 inside outside or the tornado kick you just shot in and locked up their foot in mid-air and then they would fall and then you'd strike once they hit the ground it was pretty much textbook they're not big on defense they're used to dominating on kicks and when you watch a taekwondo fight that's all they do is hop hop hop kick kick kick back and forth they're excellent with feet but in order to win you don't play by their game you make them play yours and you stay away from the feet I tried my best to stay a 50-50 fighter as I call it,vjust as good with my hands as I was with my feet and that really went far and worked for me but like I said I'm only speaking for myself in my own experience. my fighting name was Golden dragon not because of the video games and movies but because my instructor always had a name for each us advanced fighters based on how we would fight and I was called Golden dragon because I fought like a dragon which means I was a chess player I would move them around to open up stuff for me to strike or I'd wait till they came in and use their move against them. I was a very strategic fighter which that's the style of the dragon. golden because I had blonde hair and the majority of the people I was fighting were Asian and had black hair so my blond hair stood out so he called me Golden dragon. The point of that comment is that you have to be a smart fighter and assess your opponent and then come up with the formula for what it's going to take to get through their defense if they have one and how you're going to win the fight and then make it happen. Mine was always the same for taekwondo fighters which is what I explained earlier. stay inside strike fast and wait for the spins easy peasy.

OK, we can see that he has flexibility and he can still move around. Question: why is it that none of his videos show him sparring with people who are not one of his own students? This is not impressive because he’s not really fighting to show how effective his style is. At this point it is just ballet. The kicks are cool, especially the side kick. But without footage of them in actual usage… It’s just flashy.
