So the lesson here for those that don't know, never mess about with young calves unless you know what you are doing. Even the most loving and adorable cow can turn into a wild cape Buffalo at the flick of a switch when she has a calf, if she perceives you as a threat she can become a bellowing snot slinging monster that wants to stomp on you. Always have a plan and escape route, and ideally some help to separate the calf first before you do anything with it. Oh, and maybe some ear defenders.

Oh yeah you can get them a "drama queen " and you have two of them a calf and a goose Ian I share an idea with you that I seen a neighour do and now I do. Hi Ian, I’ve not had cattle of my own but have helped a friend of mine who’s got suckling heard of over 300 head of cattle and that brings back not good memories of dealing with cows with calf’s. I’ve had plenty of moments when I nearly had to change my underwear and my legs have gone to jelly but have always been careful. That cow wouldn’t have taken much more before she would have been over the gate and that even made me tremble just watching it do I got ever sympathy with you !

Cattle are a lot bigger than us and can show awesome spurts of power if you push the wrong buttons. Working with these animals is risky so you can never be on your B game, one wrong decision can put you in hospital, or a wooden box, particularly when there are young calves involved. Walt Disney, and a few others have given too many folks the idea that these animals can think and reason, sing and dance, be more human.... but at the end of the day they live on instinct, rank and habit, they are controlled by hormones and basic requirements. Big animals must be respected, and treated with care and caution... This is the lesson.

People think the bull is the danger but the cow can be just as bad. I had one knock me down, she then got on her knees so she could grind me in to the ground the way a bull does. I was out cold by this stage but luckily my friend was there and he saved me. A blow to the head, 2 broken ribs, 3 cracked ribs and a messed-up hip. I was lucky that was all I got. The ribs and the hip still cause me pain 30 years later.

We had to tag calves in an open field... we had a charlais chasing us off. Soo our solution is 2 guys in the loader bucket and one driving. We tag the calf 6 feet in the air lol one guy hold the calf the other tags

I saw a good one a year or two ago, farmer in the States I think had a big bale ring strapped to his loader with some mesh zip tied to the bars to stop the calf escaping , he would drive out, drop the ring over the calf then tag the calf inside the ring. Another guy had a Mule or similar with a 6’ square cage bolted to the side and an automatic gate on the front, w He could catch a running calf, shut the gate, stop, jump out and tag the calf in the cage, jump back in, release the calf and on to the next one..... The things we do eh. 😄👍

@@FarmerP yeah I had seen the one with the cage before... we didn't have a side by side at the time and our pasture is way to rugged and complex to drive fast in. steep slopes and such

Screw the pipe, I carry a hay fork with me, and I have still been cheese grated off the gate with their head, twice over 10 years. Once when I separated her, she jumped the gate and charged me and other one got me when I was given colostrum a few hours the birth. She was lying down and sprung up lighting fast and head butted the gate driving me across the pen. We also keep the gates high off the ground incase we get caught out and roll under. Danger never takes a day off.

Never had a cow go for me but had a freesian bull charge at me once. Luckily I was always quite wary of him so as soon as I saw the movement i vaulted the gate. The bull couldn't quite stop in time and charged into the heavy yard gate actually denting it slightly.

Our Dexters may be small in comparison to the big continentals or dairy breeds, but still worthy of a healthy respect. Most of our population see the peaceful cows grazing the green pastures, with little idea of the risks a minority take to produce their food, dairy cattle (not young heifers) are used to more human contact so are usually a bit easier to handle, where the beef farmers may only touch their animals a few times each year... At the end of the day, they all have the ability to do you a serious mischief if you are not on the ball 100% all the time.

for protection for your ears where some ear plugs or soundproof headphone when mom is yelling in your ear. be happy you got little dexters. we had a year we had some jumpers fries Holsteins milking cows. they can get over 1,6 meter if they want. or go through a fence . so we take the calf's always in other building also to keep them healthy in a nursing barn , that is how it goes with milk cows

Gosh, those Mamma cows were indeed a tad more than mildly interested in what was going on. Glad that your okay Farmer P. Just noticed the video editor on your screen. What flavor is it. Microsoft removed Movie Maker from the PC's over here, which for me, is just not good. Anyway, keep on with the great work. Thank You! Dave.

Fellow humans, please look at this, and grasp the fact that this is wrong. We don't have to eat meat or drink milk. We have the option to not do harm to our fellow creatures.

While you are quite entitled to your beliefs and ideals, whether I agree with you or not, how you choose to live your life is none of my business. Human kind has spent the last 200'000 years developing and advancing to where we are today, and it was all made possible by a protein rich diet that we exploited from animals, Rather than sit in the jungle eating vegetation all day creating cabbage farts, our enriched diet gave us time to explore and learn, evolution has followed us and with the help of our diet created the modern human. It would be very difficult, and very time consuming to go backwards without the help of world wide vegetation growers and profit greedy processors taking full advantage of your religion. Your ideals although understandable, are also unsustainable, your love of animals is believe it or not shared by meat eaters as well, in many ways we appreciate them even more than the vegan fraternity, many would simply not exist at all if it wasn't for their protein values. Perhaps you should take a little time to work out how and where your vegetable diet comes from, and the processes required to put it on your plate, including the rather large numbers of wild creatures that have to die for it. Unless you grow all your own, with no chemicals and no pest control.... I will count you as one of the hypocrite numpties who prefer to see their world wearing blinkers, or eyes completely shut to the realities that surround them. Animal proteins are safe, natural, sustainable, healthy and with modern despatch and processing morally justifiable. As for ear tagging by the way, its a legal requirement to allow traceability... How many piercings did you choose to have?

Why do you have to tag them within 14days
@FarmerP
@FarmerP 3 жыл бұрын
We have 27 days to register them David, they are a lot harder to handle every day they get older and stronger, it’s less stress on the calf and me to do them at a couple of days old. You can’t register calves over 27 days old. No registration = No passport. No passport= The ministry gets upset if they find out and You can’t do anything with the animal.
