A short update with some clips of me doing Telemark turns for the first time on a new set of Asnes Falketind 62s. I bought the Falketinds on sale in the spring of 2023, but haven't actually used them until today! They were super fun, but a bit outmatched considering how deep the snow was. haha!

I've produced this collection of articles and videos about backcountry travel and exploration with the beginner and intermediate adventurer in mind. This is the demographic for whom I most often served while working in the Lake Tahoe outdoor recreation industry. In essence, these informational projects I create and publish are extensions of the many conversations we've had over the years.
Please note that, although I encourage you to venture out of your comfort zone, you need to know your limits and when to turn back. So you fell for the Asnes fever... 😄. Nice skis indeed. Tell us more about your experience as you ski with them... I am surprised: Your weather looks just like ours up north... Take care.

Haha! Yeah, I did. The sale at the end of last season was too good to pass up. I'll try to incorporate them more into use as more time passes. As always, thanks for tuning in and for contributing to the conversation :)

Thank you for the update on the snow (especially the depth at lake level). It’s much appreciated and great to hear! I am coming up to South Lake Tahoe in less than 3 weeks to do some snowshoeing. For the first couple days, I’ll be with some newbies and want to keep their first snowshoeing experience as easy and fun as possible. So, will likely stay close to the lake for those excursions (for instance, Camp Richardson area). If you have any trail/area suggestions for my newbie friends, I’d love to hear them. Stay safe during this storm!

You're welcome, Tina! It was pretty awesome to be out in that storm for sure. As I showed in the last clip, though, a lot of that snow started getting pretty sticky and wet. The sleet/rain continued for most of the second half of the day yesterday, and we've been getting a bit more wetter snow today. The forecast looks like a couple more inches of snow over the next couple of days and then mid-20s and mid-40s for a temperature range, which is actually pretty normal. So I'm hopeful that when you arrive there'll still be plenty of snow on which to play :) As far as recommendations go for easier terrain for beginner snowshoers, I'd say to take a look at the following article I wrote a while back. And let me know if you have specific questions about any of the locations that I featured in that article. SNOWSHOEING ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF LAKE TAHOE ( tahoetrailguide.com/snowshoeing-on-the-south-shore-of-lake-tahoe/ ) As always, thanks for tuning in and the kind words :)

Hi, just checking in on the snow cover/conditions. I’m heading up on Saturday. I’m going to be snowshoeing with newbies on Saturday and Sunday (then on my own after that). I’m very flexible when it comes to my finding trails/areas to snowshoe on my own. But, I’d like to stay near Lake Tahoe itself for the new snowshoers, if possible. Anyway, I’d appreciate any info you have. Thanks for your videos and for your advice.

Hey Tina! We actually have quite a bit of snow all around the lake at this point. There were a series of storms that hit us over the past week, so it's been pretty nice. There's still going to be more snow in the higher elevations, but even at lake level around certain locations (mostly around the west side of the lake) have enough snow for snowshoeing. What part of the lake are you going to be visiting? I can maybe provide some ideas for locations in which to snowshoe based on that.

@@JaredManninen Hi, I was hoping to stay close South Lake Tahoe (where we’re staying). If the snow is adequate, I was thinking around Camp Richardson & Fallen Leaf Lake. But, I did tell them that we may have to go elsewhere if there’s not enough snow. My backup plans include easy trails at the Donner Lake and Spooner Lake areas. I would love to hear any suggestions/advice you have on good areas for newbies. I just don’t want to turn them off on snowshoeing with too much mileage or difficulty. Groomed or packed trails preferred. And, good views are a plus. Thanks!

@@JaredManninen Oh, and one more thing…these people are coming from low-altitude areas and only staying overnight. I have one friend getting there early enough for snowshoeing on the first day, Saturday (then leaving early the next day). Then, a large group of 7-8 people are arriving Saturday night for Sunday snowshoeing (and leaving late Sunday). So, these people will not have time to acclimate to altitude! I live at sea level (Bay Area) myself. If it’s been more than month or so since I’ve been at altitude, I’ll usually arrive in the afternoon, take it easy, drink tons of water, and do a relatively easy, short trail…then, progress from there to harder stuff. These people don’t have time for that unfortunately. Which is one more reason for wanting easy trails. Thanks again!

@@tinad2847I think any of those ideas are good. I was just at Pope Marsh (near Pope Beach, but closer to SR89) doing some birding. And, although I walked with just a set of hiking shoes as I was only taking a quick look and not making a whole adventure out of it, I could've easily benefited from snowshoes or even cross-country skis. Obviously the main thoroughfares around Camp Rich and Fallen Leaf Lake and Cathedral Meadow will be somewhat tracked out, but there's plenty of snow around to go snowshoeing on. Like, you could just walk "off-trail" and find more than enough snow to warrant snowshoes. If you did need a backup plan, go up to Luther Pass and snowshoe around Grass Lake, or down to Hope Valley. Both of those locations are flat and have plenty of snow, and a much easier drive than to Donner Lake or Spooner. Good luck!

@@tinad2847 It sounds like you have a plan so, like I said in the previous comment, I think you should be fine anywhere around South Lake Tahoe. Oh, and Washoe Meadows State Park could be one other backup plan for snowshoeing if you wanna stay closer to town. Have a great time out there!
