If anyone's wondering why "taiko" sometimes becomes "daiko", I believe it's because of rendaku (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendaku). Anime fans are probably aware of the fact that "kami" is god, whereas "god of death" is "shinigami" and not "shinikami". That's rendaku in action. I believe the taiko/daiko interchange is an example of rendaku as well.

Speaking Japanese drums, I remember a cartoon I watched when I was a kid about a fisherman who could barely catch a fish, he then witnessed a storm with huge waves and all the fish bouncing on them. He was told by the other villagers about a group of ogres who lived on the island that was always visible on the horizon who held some kind of secret power to always have a bountiful catch. He then sailed to that island with his boat, where he met a young ogre who took him to his village, and later showed him that he could cause storms by beating a magic drum, the fisherman was naturally jealous of that, so at night he stole the ogre's drum and sailed away to return to his own village. The ogres, however, noticed the theft and were absolutely furious, and they caused a massive storm by beating the much larger drums they had so that the fisherman would drown. However he survived with the magic drum in tow, and commissioned an artisan to make a replica of the drum, which he put on a boat and then pushed it towards the island. The cartoon ended with him thanking the ogres as he was looking at the drifting boat with the replica on it. Now, I don't know if this is a Japanese story, but the patterns on the drums, along with the ogres were unmistakably Japanese, I just don't know the name of this story.

A shrine near my house (Kuruma Kaeshi Jinja 車返し神社) and for the night of New Year`s they allow you to play with a Taiko (I think a Dadaiko as it is huge but it is not ornate). Actually, right next to the Shrine is a Honganji Temple that allows the common folk to ring their giant bell as well so you can hear both at the same time. I think with the Taiko (as well as huge bells) there is a primal feeling from just not hearing the sound, but also literally feeling the vibrations from the sound...

Everything in this video brings back fond musical memories from Okami... but definitely it’s music leans more toward Gagakyu and Kabuki more than the Buddhist style... which makes sense because a lot of Okami is based in more of Shinto lore than Buddhism... more people need to play that game!!!

i'm a taiko drummer in the UK and Taiko is the best thing that happened to me. i became a musician in several other instruments because of a taiko class i took part in at 11 years old. i learnt from that class and found a group in my area. that group grew to be a major player in the Uk circuit and while i was there we played as a headliner act of the Uk Taiko festival in Exeter and played at the Albert hall, the uk equivalent of the radio city music hall or carnagy hall i think. after i was too old for that group since it was 18 and under i went and formed my own Dojo, Uma Taiko, and now i teach Taiko around schools in England. i highly recommend people try a class in Taiko, you might find a new hobby or carrier. it changed my life, will it change yours?

You know, Linfamy, this Shawn guy sure seems to be holding you captive a lot. Maybe consider posting Taiko drummers as guards around your home to warn you whenever he shows up?

When I see "Taiko", I remember that novel written by Keiji Yoshikawa 😂

Yeah, me too. And actually when i hear anything about Taiko, my mind literally refers to lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi instead of a big drum

@@Dfathurr rigghhtt?? Or maybe Yoshikawa sensei just do that for a reason, I mean that title. Taiko for war drums, since Hideyoshi was one of great warlord back thenn
@Dfathurr
@Dfathurr 3 жыл бұрын
@@deaprabowo1462 i don't think so. Taiko is a title for retired Kampaku (Prime minister or sort), which is a title that Hideyoshi hold for years. More to that, even today, Hideyoshi still can be refers with word "Taiko" or "Taiko sama" Although to be fair, i still wonder why a retired Kampaku have a title named after a war drum
