Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party faces an uphill battle in the upcoming local elections, as discontent grows over the slowing economy and escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait. DPP insiders have estimated that support for them in the Huanhe South Road Integrated Market in central Taipei has gone down from 70% to less than 40%, and this could foretell woes at the polls for them across the island. Taiwanese political opinion tracker DailyView has projected that the KMT could win 15 out of 22 mayoral and county magistrate seats, while the DPP could win just five.

What an idiotic comment. How would one country have maritime disputes with its own province? Even the US and the collective west recognized Taiwan as a part of China. Learn some geography and history before you make stupid comments.

@@denniscollinster7882 International waters are neutral for international maritime passages. Territorial waters are with limit near the land. The problem with China is claiming the entire sea even constructed military base in spartlys bullying small asian neighbors and restricting international passages. That's the trouble. USA has been always there after the world war II. Taiwan straight should be neutral too but China bullied anybody. Thanks for the US to keep the bully at bay.

@@clarkl7027 Communist China's claim is illegal because Taiwan has not been ruled together with China. PRC rules China while ROC rules Taiwan and its islands only according to the constitution. Two separate countries with 2 different governments. Repeat, never in history that China and Taiwan are ruled together in China.

Since the end of WWII, majority of the world has enjoyed unprecedent peace and prosperity for more than 7 decades, as US is no longer the unipolar of the world, we will need creativity for politicians to create a better world order that is fair and inclusive. There is little to no room for US, China and Taiwan to back down, new ideas and political structure are urgently needed to solve the current strategic stalemate in East Asia.

When President Ma and the KMT was still in power, the relationship between the ROC and the PRC were excellent, to the point that both governments held a summit in Singapore for the first time in years. Now the DPP is derailing the peace process between the two Chinese government.

@@confusedscreaming6249 ROC is obsolete as it was inherited from then KMT refugees from China 75 years ago. Today, ROC territories does not include anything about China in government paper and reality. KMT should continue reforming for Taiwan born politicians. The legacy of Dr Sun was only the foundation but constant reforms have brought Taiwan now in full democratic coursing always from half-cooked KMT dictatorship of original refugees. The new breed of Taiwanese can enjoy their hard work by choosing the right leaders directly in their power to vote. While communist China is a huge market, the only trouble is from the communist dictator trying to mix their old mentality of claiming everything out of China. Putin senseless war to peaceful Ukraine should be a lesson of the entire world to prevent such like of tyrant falsely claiming fascism.

@@thornados4969 Taiwan's official name is ROC (Republic of China). You are correct when you say they have nothing to do the the communist party of China, but they have everything to do with China. Both ROC and PRC are unfinished business of what is left behind by the Chinese civil war in 1949. The civil war can end in 2 ways, a peace deal between ROC & PRC, like what the KMT is aiming for (like East and West- Germany). Or an outright hostile takeover by one side (like North- and South Vietnam) which seems to be what DPP is steering after.

@@DanBurgaud Each Taiwanese has the power to vote whom he/she wants to lead their lives. That's one essence of democracy of the people for people. DPP is just a party but the real choice is the people from different parties or individual independent. The voters are wise enough to know. Top chip contractor TSMC sent 300 engineers and their families to the company’s $12 billion plant in Arizona last week as it prepares to become operational, according to Taiwanese media outlet Business Weekly. Morris Chang, the founder of TSMC, stated at last week’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit that US vice president Kamala Harris welcomed TSMC’s presence in the US and would offer assistance as the company seeks to build a second plant in Arizona. Chang said that the cost of building new fabs in the US could be 50% higher than in Taiwan, but that this was not a barrier. He explained, “this is very important for the US and very much needed.” TSMC will hold a ceremony early next month to officially move equipment to the new fab in Arizona, with the US Secretary of Commerce in attendance. Continue hollow out Taiwan value . Taiwan’s ruling party betray the people. Send people to train TSMC manufacturing IP for Intel . Currently it's master is already asking for 3nm manufacturing IP
