Taiwan's ruling party has won a crucial presidential election that it billed as a choice between democracy and authoritarianism.
It's a setback for China, which had warned voters on the self-ruled island against re-electing the DPP - a party it views as dangerous separatists.
The election has drawn global attention for how it will affect ties with China, which claims Taiwan as its own.
Lai Ching-te received more than 40 per cent of the vote.
He was followed by KMT candidate Hou Yu-ih with over 30 per cent, and TPP candidate Ko Wen-je with over 25 per cent.

It doesn't matter how many times the Chinese regime repeats the *lies,* or how *angry* it pretends to be, - Taiwan 🇹🇼 is still an independent country.

@Groktargash don't play word gymnastics to satisfy your narrative...Taiwan is not recognised even in the UN..only 13 shitty little countries recognise Tawain as an Independent country...Only a handful of countries officially recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state. These countries include Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Vatican City.

Why would anyone choose authoritarian? Democracy and freedom of choice will always prevail . People in China wish they’d have the choice to choose.

There's no unification, nor reunification with china. Taiwan indeed is an independent country, a Democracy and Freedom country, shares the same value with the rest of world. Taiwanese vote for their own president and legislators. Taiwan has her own currency, govt, defence force, passport, territory, people, sovereignty. Taiwan people decide their own policies by their Congress and how their tax$ goes, never in a single day paying tax$ to dictatorship PRC CCPchina. Covid-19 started in PRC CCPchina.

I hope Taiwan remembers the fate of Hong Kong for elections to come. The CCP's idea of the 92 Consensus is One Country Two Systems, which isn't the ROC's understanding of the same Consensus.

The fact of the election result of Taiwan. The independent party has been a ruling party 8 years ago on the goal to become an independent country. The most recent election, the same party won 57.1% of the votes in 2020. The same party won 56.1% in 2016. But in 2024, the same party still won but at 40.1%, I land slide of 16% loss of populous voters in its pursuit of independence. Unless, the United Nation admits Taiwan to be a country, your hope that Taiwan is an independent country remains a hope. What is so-call democracy nowadays? Democracy? lobbyists' democracy, money democracy, democracy ends at the end of voting? dictatorship, one party dictatorship, two parties dictatorships? Unless, we voters understand the contents of democracy, we will be fooled by this word "democracy"!!! We the populous should not be naive.

Bad logic, the two opposing parties failed to merge because the vast majority want to keep distance with China. Only about 30% of the KMT supporters actually think we're more Chinese thab Taiwanese. But again they're fooled by the CCP/KMT rhetoric. Taiwan = Republic of China after all these years. My wife and in-laws were from Kinmen, a small island originally part of FuJian province. I know how people were fooled and confused by the "Taiwan is only one province" rhetoric.

KMT obtained about 33% votes. The KMT now held the same amount of seats as the DPP in the parliament. The DPP lost the majority. Just because DPP in Taiwan holds 40.1% of populous approval, 59% of Taiwanese are not independence seekers.

@@ronaldjohnson1474 i do not think you are right! 23% of 59% are people who want to maintain the status quo but not for Taiwan as an independent country. If so, they move to 40.1%.
