Do not miss this incredible chance to catch a glimpse of one the most isolated parts of mountainous Central Asia; the astonishing area around lake Karakul that has not been filmed for television prior to this documentary.
This remarkable journey will take us to Tajikistan; the Autonomous Province of Gorno-Badakhshan, to be more precise.
Environmental expert, Jamshed, is travelling via the twisted and uncertain "Pamir Highway" to investigate a possible threat to the natural water supplies of the area; glaciers shrinking.
The final point for the expedition is the exceptional Karakul lake, placed high in the Ak- Baikal pass, 4655 meters above sea level, where Jamshed is to meet with geologist Nasser Kundur Al- Fakhry.
Along the long and somewhat neglected "Pamir Highway," the crew makes stops to the famous hot springs of Garam Chashma; the 3000 year old, pre-historic petroglyphs of Langar, and the Yamchun Fortress from 12th century overlooking the entire Wakhan valley in Afghanistan.
TRACKS publishes unique, unexpected and untold stories from across the world every week.
From the series "Lakes on the Roof of the World."

That is mostly done to Africans. Its amazing how many culture from different continents will have the same level of poverty as Africans but when it comes documentary on the same poverty level on Africa, the reportage sounds so different. Some narrators are just filled with some kind of mentality towards Africans.

I am not Indian and I see no harm in it. Rahul Shekhawat: do not let haters influence the kindness they chose to ignore. Now I know where the song "Dokhtore Badakhshea" (Badakhshan Maiden)was talking about..thank you,Ajmal Omid! I began my fascination with Central Asia 40 years ago when studying their music. All the "Stan" countries are possessors of cultural, historical and archaeological riches that too many Westerners know nothing about. Being literally on the other side of the world from me (USA) adds to their mystique. Love the music score! Great film! As delicious as a good meal!

A most wonderful documentary about a place of heart stopping beauty and equally heartbreaking harshness. Yet the life of the nomads has a Primeval pull a tug a strange sort of invitation that mocks modernity. The music was of another level. All in all just perfect! Well done DW!!

Modernity does not mean negation of tradition dude. It's also a fuzzy word. Ancient world like India etc was in some sense more modernistic than even today. It's a relative term not an absolute in itself. Even Nokia phones see considered outdated today which were once considered modern.

Fascinating film. I love the way these people live with nature and use nature in their daily lives. Building, weaving, making felt, which if you have ever seen photos of people similar to these who live in high mountains such as the Himalayas, thick felt is used in clothing and shoes for protection from bitter cold winter weather. Beautiful people. I’m surprised they are so happy to accommodate visitors and tourists. I see much kindness there which would be nice to see in other places. I hope that no one will ever take advantage of their kind and welcoming nature.

Excellent documentary! Thank you all for the nice views and the information provided about that area, and also for the concern about the possible climate change effects on the lake.

One of the top journeys I've made The people I met were friendly. Some were fairly poor but all of them seemed to be happy. Lovely scenery throughout. Accommodation was invariably comfortable.
