2023 was an exceptional year for African music - besides catering to pan-African
dancefloors and listeners who stream from home, engaging with contemporary
African music is trendy and cool. The African music Gods surprised us with a sudden
act of genius and artistry beyond our times. The reunion of Afrikan Roots, an
internationally acclaimed and unique afro house band has toured and performed
globally, Black Motion and its former group member Mörda formally known as
Murdah Bongz, popular Afro-house group that hit stardom in 2010, and Deejay
Buckz a renowned South African music producer, songwriter, and DJ known for his
massive hit "Ytjukutja,".
The record breaking song which is Part of an upcoming concept EP from electronic
icons Black Motion and Afrikan Roots was released on May 10 to great reviews.
“Takala” is about savouring the good times with good friends. That nothing else
matters but the present moment with your inner people or bloodline. It means that
through anything, we will make it… despite what we go through, my day one is still
my day one.
The single artwork is a tribute to the history of the Venda People. The flag and the
coat of arms of the then Republic of Venda which was eventually absorped into the
Republic of South Africa. The former president Mphephu Ramabulana. The
motto=Shumela Venda which means "Always aspire to serve Venda" or simply "Serve
Venda". The artwork also shows the contribution of Venda in Pretoria, Soshanguve
(Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni and VENDA). During the production of this song Nyekx
Manyemula, a member of Afrikan Roots was seen chanting the lyrics to Dj Buckz
who turned them to chants.
