Such a stark contrast to the Dragon2. I’m not necessarily knocking Starliner - if it works, it works - but you can’t help but notice a massive difference between the way these two vehicles were designed. It’s like Boeing used as many off the shelf parts/designs to get this thing flying.
@user-ku7jn6fc6g
@user-ku7jn6fc6g Ай бұрын
None of the controls are from any planes or other Boeing vehicles. They're all invented specifically for Starliner. It's a difference in design philosophy. Starliner is designed to maximize redundancy, safety, and control. Starliner files by computer under normal circumstances, but it's designed so that it can be flown completely manually if ever need be. Hence the controls, switches, and knobs. Made to be flown by astronaut if the computer ever goes down.

Guys, airlines haven't removed physical switches and knobs from their fleet's cockpits just because it's the 2020s and tablets are everywhere. So crewed spacecraft can absolutely have them, too. A lot of astronauts are former military pilots, so this layout might be easier and more intuitive for them to learn. Pressurized gloves can be clumsy to work with, so having a bigger button to press can be better for the crew. Also, Starliner looks cluttered because it's carrying a significant cargo payload. Crew rotation flights carrying 4 astronauts won't have all those cargo pallets onboard. It's good to test Starliner flying with a somewhat higher launch mass than a typical mission on this demo flight.

BrianFoss571 Airliners aren’t ever “the tip of the spear’ as far as avionics goes and they are usually up to 10 years behind the latest proven, reliable, up-to-date avionics. Airliners aren’t even flying with infrared vision yet and they have yet to put in synthetic ground mapping. Smaller OEM aircraft manufacturers have the flexibility to adopt the latest and greatest much quicker than the budget. Conscious airliner manufacturers are… Like Boeing.
