Petersburg, Illinois, is a city with a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The city was founded in 1833 by George Warburton and Peter Lukins, two friends of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln himself surveyed the town in 1835-1836. n 1840, many of the residents of New Salem, a nearby town, moved to Petersburg after New Salem was abandoned. The New Salem residents were responsible for much of the growth and development of Petersburg. They planned the town and helped it to become a thriving community. In 1839, Menard County was formed from the northern part of Sangamon County. Petersburg was selected as the county seat and has been the county seat ever since. The Menard County Courthouse is located in Petersburg. Petersburg was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African Americans to escape to freedom. The city was home to many abolitionists, and it was a place where fugitives could find shelter and assistance. Petersburg was also a major center of commerce during the 19th century. The city was located on the Sangamon River, which was a major transportation route. Petersburg was also home to several factories and mills. The city was damaged by an earthquake in 1909 and by a flood in 1993. However, Petersburg has rebuilt after each disaster and continues to be a thriving community.
