This tune, one of the most famous jazz standards, composed by the American alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, is part of the repertoire that I dedicated to the interpretation of solo jazz standards on the bandoneon. Here you can find to the whole album:

I'm highly impressed with the skill represented here. I'm so accustomed to Dave Brubek doing this that I seldom am happy with anything but Brubeck. This, however I find enjoyable. Not an easy instrument or piece. Excellent!!!

Thank you. Yes, it is quite a challenge to interpret the beautiful jazz standards of the past on such an unusual musical instrument like the bandoneon, especially when we are accustomed to the classic original versions of our jazz heroes, those who created that magic sound. Nevertheless, I believe it’s worth to try, in order to keep exploring the horizons and possibly unveiling new landscapes and perhaps enjoy these beautiful tunes under a different light. 🙏🏼🤗✌🏽✨🌞❤️

@@paolorussocom Hej! 🇸🇪 I'm not a musician, but I've freelanced as an audio engineer for a couple of years. (Today, I work in IT.) My father is a musician though and we share a tiny / personal studio here in Stockholm Sweden, not very far away from you then. ☺ Do you have others over to your studio for recording sessions also?

@@MR-vj8dn Oh, lovely Stockholm! In fact, I use my studio just for my own recordings and projects. It mostly works as my private studio/rehearsals room, but once a month we open it up to the audience with international guest musicians and we have live concerts. It’s named after myself (“Paolo’s Jazz Club”) and you can watch videos in the playlist I created with concerts from our program. Last December, we had one the finest Swedish musician, the stunning cello and bass wizard Svante Henryson, who delivered an amazing performance. Usually, first set is as solo and second in duo with myself on piano and bandoneon. 😊

Dear Paulo, thank you so much for your kind words. The bandoneon is certainly a very intriguing and fascinating instrument. I am a piano player and I have approached the bandoneon late in life, at age 32 (21 years ago) and one never stops learning, since it it such a rich and versatile instrument, with amazing exploration possibilities. I wish you all the best luck in this exciting ride and I am positive you’ll have much fun! Best Wishes from Denmark!

@@paolorussocom I never had an opportunity to try a bandoneon , how do you find it vs piano in this kind of complex rhythm with it's inhale/exhale?
@paolorussocom
@paolorussocom Жыл бұрын
@@Seregium Every musical instrument has got their own peculiar difficulties. The piano is a never-ending exploration laboratory and its magnificent interpreters, throughout the centuries, have enriched mankind's artistic output with stunning pearls of beauty, both in classical and jazz music - as well as other collateral genres - and there's still much to discover. However, at least in the very beginning, the approach to this master instrument is "facilitated" - so to speak - by the visual and logic disposition of the keys on the keyboard. Now, in my view, the complexity of the diatonic bandoneon (or, better, "bi-sonoric" bandoneon) resides mainly within the almost complete lack of logic in the displacement of the buttons on each side of the instrument. In total, 4 non-systematic keyboards (L + R opening the bellow; L + R closing the bellow). This alone requires an enormous amount of time, in order to memorise these positions and rendering the digitalisation almost automatic; this gets even more difficult during improvisation, when you are required to choose the notes in real time. According to my personal experience, I can tell you that for me it's basically a matter of constant, specific and perseverant practice - including, of course, both types of phrasing (opening and closing the bellow). Furthermore, while when playing piano the posture helps to have a good and comprehensive view of the entire keyboard, on the bandoneon this does not happen. So, in the end you tend to learn without looking at your fingers moving on the buttons, but just feeling the touch on the surface of the button structure. Greetings
