From the golden era of general purpose mountain bikes, watch this neglected Trek 6500 go from crusty old worn out bike, to a perfect entry level mountain bike for a kid to take it off some sweet jumps! Come along and watch me completely clean, lubricate and tune up this bicycle while I adjust the brakes, adjust the shifting and free up a sticky freewheel.

When is the point of life when you have too many bikes ? "Trek 6500? I think I have one in the pile." 😀

Great vid. I've got a 2004 Trek 6500 and another from 2009. Mid-range HTs in their day. What I like most is their high quality and very lightweight frames, they're very quick esp with a few modern upgrades to critical areas 👌

That's a pretty cool handlebar on that ride, almost BMXish 😂

I still have my 7000 that I bought back in 1999 when I was 18 years old first new bike I ever bought when I started working in a shop. Still has tons of. Upgrades and I’ve tried to keep it original as I had it back at that time. Kind of a cool time capsule. Those asymmetrical wheels that you used were always kind of a pain.

omg I commented on this a year ago without mentioning that v-brake sound..it's almost therapy to me after dealing with them for the first time and I love em. I think I have the 6500 SLR version with disc brakes. I spent way too much on this bike without touching the fork or shifters cuz everything but that and the headset has been replaced and I learnt so much from it. As for the brake setup: I say it's whatever the user likes (to a degree) I like em at 95% (if that even remotely says something) so I have enough buffer to have a feel before it rly bites, but I should not be able to hit myself while braking HARD eg OTB power and same goes for the back brake. Bonus points for achieving 1 finger wheeliestopping brakes (when front wheel is straight up) but most vbrakes never did that for me.

I have a 18.5 6500zx same color as this bike, I wore out the chain rings pretty quickly, and then replaced them with 7075 chain rings. I've upgraded the front fork to a Black Box Carbon World Cup SID with 100mm travel, the carbon fork makes the bike ride a bit smoother that the standard Judy RS shock. Bike has served me well over the years, though I did have to rebuild the rear hub as the hub, and freewheel were out of adjustment, and a issue with the rear cassette freewheel.

I have very similar Trek 6500 in black with red trim. The ZX frame is a good quality aluminum frame. I had converted it to a single speed, but thinking of going back to original drivetrain. Thanks for the video!

It's almost like watching Bob Ross paint. I think I might have the same kind of trek 6500 frame but all the components are different. It's an ex rental with a paint job.
