The House of Lords has the opportunity to “work with the Government” and stop people smuggling after the Commons overturned amendments to the Rwanda Bill, Downing Street has said.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “Not acting, in the Government’s view, is not an option and it certainly wouldn’t be a compassionate route.
“We want to end the business of people smuggling and ensure that vulnerable people are not lured into making the perilous journey across the Channel, so there’s an opportunity for the Lords to work with the Government this week and pass this Bill.”
Asked whether the Prime Minister thought the House of Lords was “out of touch”, the spokesman said he would not characterise peers in that way.
Former military intelligence officer Philip Ingram says asylum seekers trying to enter the UK should go through a “legal route” somewhere in Europe.
“That would make it a French, German, Italian or Spanish problem.”

TURN THE BOATS BACK BY PHYSICAL FORCE. NOTHING else will work and all the while we continue to throw away millions £. A fleet [30-50] of small, armed, fast patrol boats [relatively small cost compared to hotel bills] stationed every mile down the Channel to tow the dinghys back a few miles into French waters. Spare inflatable craft are carried [or available from nearby stationed supply vessels] so if the dinghy is deliberately sunk or disabled a spare is ready. It is made perfectly clear to the occupants that any further attempt to sink/disable the spare craft will invalidate the obligation to rescue people who repeatedly and deliberately put themselves into danger. The problem will disappear in a matter of days, if not hours. And if a few lives do get lost in the process....unfortunate, but we're talking of stopping an invasion of our Country.

I find it absolutely disgusting how much things cost this country. How many hands are in the cookie jar in everything the government does. I remember a story about a council, a car had gone through some iron railings, a friend who works for the council got a quote from the local blacksmith for £6000 to repair the railings and it would be done in two weeks .... but nnooooooo ... the council rejected the local guy - put it out for tender, got someone from the mainland (this was on a scottish island) to come and to the work and by the time the job have finished it was reckoned they had burned through £50,000 .... oh and the job was completed two years later. This is the sort of criminal waste we are up against - so next time your council/public services tells you it/they is/are short of cash think of this story and act accordingly :-)

I have always questioned why we do not have an asylum application centre in France which I understand was offered by the French but not taken up by the UK. We could then return them to France if they do not have a visa!!!!!!

I I’ve in Australia. Yes we initially stopped the boats but we had an agreement with Indonesia to send them back. Also they were coming through international waters. The Channel has no international waters. Our government were condemned and threatened with all sorts . But they stood their ground and would not be bullied by others telling them how to run the country. And the threats turned out to empty. Just last month there were 2 boats arrived with people mainly from Pakistan . This happened because the current government took their eye off the ball regarding the border when pre election they said they wouldn’t change the policy. They will need to up their game a bit as could cost them the next election! But now we are having people arriving by air with a return ticket and a visitors visa and then having the temerity to claim asylum. Such is their determination. I feel the definition of refugee needs urgent reviewing and updating since much has changed since its inception in 1951. It was initially only meant for political asylum but it been allowed to morph into something much bigger and is being abused by people smugglers, lefty lawyers and the asylum seekers themselves. I feel really strongly that these people are jumping the queue ahead of equally or even more deserving people who need asylum but are following the legal routes and not breaking the law.
