What an enormously appealing bowl that is, too! The choice to finish that as a simple, straightforward, thick-edged bowl, was absolutely perfect to display the raging glory of that spalted wood. Given all the turning skill in the world, I still would have done it that way. What a hell of a great prize for a first turning!

I'm new to this; have a small lathe but haven't turned anything in anger yet......... This demo is perfect for people like me who don't know their arse from their elbow 😂😂 tool presentation, pressure used and where to place that pressure, even things like where you stand; I've learned more from this than any other video I've watched. The average age of a woodturner here in Ireland is 65, I'm in my mid 30s........ You're teaching a brand new breed of turner's with videos like this, and brining it to a wider audience, many thanks for takin the time to do this 😁🤙 PS, the same concept of video applied to spindle work would be awesome.

Colwin, as a novice I found this tutorial superb; your teaching skills are only surpassed by your turning skills. Your explanation of flute direction was exemplary particularly for somebody who has always found difficulty in understanding 2, 10 etc and often confused by less skilled tutors who talk about 1o’clock and 3 minutes past 5 etc - you get my drift. No doubt that I will watch this tutorial again in order to consolidate my learning. Incidentally, your breaks for sharpening made me realise that I do not sharpen enough. My thanks.

Howdy. You're the man to ask; I'm most likely going to purchase a miDi lathe in the next weeks cos I live working with wood. Never turned wood but did a bit of metal years ago in school: my question is; if I turn lots of pieces over the next year's...what to do with them? Firewood? Unlikely to sell as may not be good enough

Turning spalted without a mask?
@axminster
@axminster Жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank for your comment highlighting your concern. Colwin says: "Spalted shouldn't make any difference to the thought process, ALL wood dust is hazardous to our health. This video was made to show the tuition of a beginner and we had the dust extraction running at times when needed. The wood was partially green so no dust in the air when turning. In our own workshops we would be wearing eye, ear and lung protection through the whole process."
