work up. work with a metronome starting at a nominal speed and increase it by 10-20 bpm over the course of your workout. Don't move up until you can play whatever you're working on surgically precise, then move up the tempo. Starting at 60 and moving in increments up to 120 is a good way to get faster and learn how to stay within the confines of the 4/4 time signature
