About a year ago I had the opportunity of visiting a friend and mentor of mine, John Chmiel, in Wausau, Wisconsin. Our goal for the day was to do some instruction in his 1941 Stearman named Orange Roughy.
Now, if you've never flown in an open cockpit before, it's a totally new experience. This thing is oozing with aviation history and nostalgia. This is literally the type of plane used to train pilots for intense action in WWII.
John is in love with this airplane. It's tucked away in a hangar fitting for the part. There are old pictures on the walls, model airplanes hanging from the ceiling, and relics of aviation history in every nook and cranny.
Now, I already have my tailwheel endorsement, so I'm not completely new to the concept of tailwheel flying. But it's good to get into a different airplane and learn new taildragger techniques from an experienced and seasoned instructor like John.
He's all about the sight picture, the lines, the shapes that you use to fly the airplane by outside reference. Really, that's how most flying should be done. Good instructors certainly train their students that way.
The whole experience was very sensory. Sure, you have similar gauges and instrumentation to modern airplanes (not much has changed), but it's relying on all 5 senses that makes this cool.
It's all about the feel, the smells, the sounds, the sights. I literally smelt a stall as we were practicing them. How many people can say that?
In this short video you'll hear John giving me flight instruction on how to fly the Stearman. While he knows that I already know how to fly a tailwheel aircraft, it still helps to not make assumptions and teach how to fly THIS particular airplane.
Make sure to look up John if you think this is an experience you'd like to have. He can be found at www.flywausau.com/ for not only great flights in Orange Roughy, but lots of other flight training as well. They're a full service FBO and flight training facility.
