I'm embarrassed that I'm so emotionally invested in these games that I was actually furious about that play (also really didn't like binning containment priest against the reanimator deck). At the same time, it felt appropriate to lose there and say "he doesn't just keep getting away with it!" To be honest, it feels like LSV has been playing sorta loosey goosey in these team cube draft videos for a little while now. I mean, still much better than I would be able to, no doubt, but the quantity of throws is high for a player that's one of the GOATs, and it seems like it's maybe increasing? There could be all sorts of reasons for it, or maybe I'm just getting better and spotting misplays more frequently. I don't know if it's the lack of stakes, stress, playing strictly against the best cubers in the world, or what, but it sort of feels almost like a weird sports psychology thing where he makes odd decisions at key points in the game. It's still very entertaining content. But the throws are beginning to become frustrating for me. Maybe it's a sign that I need a break from this as a part of my daily routine. Not that he needs it, but I do wish LSV all the best.

There's a Gatherer ruling on Necromancy that reads: "The sacrifice occurs only if you cast it using its own ability. If you cast it using some other effect (for example, if another effect allowed you to cast it as though it had flash), then it won't be sacrificed. "

@@dennisbradford7216That ruling is in direct conflict with the current Oracle text. I’m curious whether they changed the Oracle text for the recent reprinting, or whether the ruling is intended to be for the current text.

They’ve done a cleanup, but Gatherer rulings can be out of date. That said, my best guess is that the Gatherer ruling is correct. The sacrifice is part of the same ability as the flash. And this interpretation mirrors the original printing better.

​@@dennisbradford7216 Here's how I think it works: Etali says "When Etali, Primal Conqueror enters the battlefield, each player exiles cards from the top of their library until they exile a nonland card. You may cast any number of spells from among the nonland cards exiled this way without paying their mana costs." and Necromancy says "If you cast it any time a sorcery couldn't have been cast, the controller of the permanent it becomes sacrifices it at the beginning of the next cleanup step.". Now there is a ruling that says that timing restrictions based on a card's type is ignored, which means that you can cast the card as a part of the resolution (which is the only legal time you can cast off of Etali anyways). Now here's where things get weird: Etali allows you to cast a spell, ignoring timing restrictions as a part of it's effect, however, it does not allow you to cast a sorcery at instant speed, it simply allows you to cast the card (which may be a sorcery). Because of that, at the end of the turn, MTGO checks and sees "Necromancy was cast while the player could not cast a sorcery, therefore I must sacrifice it Now if I was a judge in this situation, I think you could rule it either way, primarily being whether you see Etali ignoring the timing restriction on a card superceding necromancy allowing itself to be cast at instant speed. I would probably rule it as you sacrifice, but I'm no judge, I'm just some random woman on the internet

According to the comprehensive rules, section 607.2h: "If an object has both a static ability and one or more triggered abilities printed on it in the same paragraph, each of those triggered abilities is linked to the static ability. Each triggered ability refers only to actions taken as a result of the static ability. " The first part of necromancy's first paragraph reads "You may cast Necromancy as though it had flash.", a static ability, the second part "If you cast it any time a sorcery couldn't have been cast, the controller of the permanent it becomes sacrifices it >at the beginning of the next cleanup step

Fully agree, especially after taking two 4 mana initiative cards so highly. Also in an Agro proactive deck, it can be as good as a mox.

I dunno, he grabbed a lot of lands in pack 1 and Caretaker was a perfect fit for his deck

This actually rocks, one of the really sad things is scrolling down to comments and seeing spoilers for matches or for the deck, and having crazy misleading stuff helps keep it unknown

Remember Cube is different than regular drafting. In normal draft, you go BEARD/BREAD (bombs > removal > evasion > aggro > duds) for pick order. However, in Cube, you want to go in reverse a.k.a. DREAD. This is because power cards enable strategies that otherwise don't work. Cards like One with Nothing are more powerful in Cube, for example.
