I really ♡♡♡ that Western Star with Allisson automatic transmission. I think Allisson is the best automatic transmission made in North America, It's better than Eaton Fuller Ultra Shift. You made the right decision.

Last year we bought a Kenworth t470 hooklift truck with an automatic. We would have preferred a manual transmission but the truck was for sale at the right price. After using an automatic 5 days a week you really are glad you have it. The hooklift is the best thing ever. Drop a bin where you need one and the truck can keep working somewhere else. Were in Southern Ontario and it's hard to find truck drivers here too so that's why we went with the hooklift. The truck only needs one driver and can be used at multiple job sites.

As someone who formerly drove OTR trucks and now an Environmental, Health and Safety administrator/instructor, I have to say you made the right decision for what you’re doing with it. As you had stated,, the workload on the driver is much less which allows them to focus more so on the actual driving portion of their trip. I would also add that it reduces fatigue, especially when operating the vehicle within the city or on congested highways/interstates in major cities. If you had been performing heavy haul jobs I would have to say the standard would probably serve you better having access to the Lo-Lo gear and the 18 speed Allison manual trans. Again, great choice!!!

Not a lot of local truck drivers miss shifting gears around here (Quebec). It is also extremely difficult to find talented drivers so the more comfort and productivity we can gain the best interest it is for everyone. Another con would be the added weight versus a manual transmission but again, compared to the gains of the driver being less fatigued and probably less grumpy by the end of the week this is not even a comparison to make anymore. Super truck by the way, hope your driver will take good care of it.

What a difference in equipment, looking at your picture from 1990 to today's truck. I worked for Twin then installing hydraulics, Turner air lifts and the dump boxes. I know exactly what the 1990 truck had compared to today. Mind blowing!

i work for a top 10 LTL carrier who runs all 50 states and canada with 4000 trucks.We have 80% automated manuals now and everyone who talked bad about them years ago has one now and loves it.The mileage is very close to manuals and pretty much no maintenance problems with the transmissions of either.We run kenworth,freightliner,and mack.I still run a manual in city pickup and delivery and can't wait to get an automatic but atlas with a older manual i dont have to worry about getting slip seated.We had automatics in the military 20 years ago so they are proven workhorses.

I drove 13s and 18s most of my career but recently I started driving a 6 axle Peterbilt with an Allison automatic and I like it. I haul mostly asphalt and occasionally sand/stone. The automatic is great when you're milling asphalt. Now if I was a single truck operation, Id buy the 18 speed, but if you plan of having different people in the truck, an auto is the way to go.

I think automatic transmissions really have their place on highway trucks, like you said theres less to worry about and the big factor is you can throw anyone in the truck and not worry about grinding gears etc. However, I think if you're running mountainous terrain like where I'm at you really need the manual to have complete control as the automatics shift around to much and end up having to regain power a lot of the time where as the manual can just lock it in and hold it there. Also I have found that the autos will not take you the places a manual can as they will only power down for so long. Had a truck bring lime out and he couldn't go where a manual truck could go, truck didn't spin or anything, it just quit.

Very nice. Even with the shortage of drivers I would be very careful as to who I let drive my truck. Just because someone can operate an automatic does not mean they can drive a truck. I know you can say the same about a stick shift but the influx of automatic transmissions has meant a lot of companies just throw a warm body behind the wheel and hope for the best. Good luck.

All I can say is don't, ever skimp on the scheduled maintenance. It's not a stick(just drop the oil and put new in), pay for the Allison filters and the Allison fluid. If it's acting up don't ignore it. If your noticing heat soak towards the end of a long hard day get a bigger cooler or deeper/finned oil pan(I would go cooler before pan as it doesn't mess with ground clearance).

Truck looks great, and simple mechanics will have less problems, but the ones making those dumper boxes need to get their heads out of their asses hehe. And take a study trip to Scandinavia and learn how things should be made 😊 Twin steer can be put on those western stars, saves the front axle from the constant over loading from lifting axle nr2. This part of the country we put sleeper cabs on everything, even the concrete pump trucks have beds in them, because it's needed. And looks cool hehe. And don't over use the vibrator, for shit will crack after a while.

I've Driven 18 speed manual and automatic and I'll say the automatic is nice minus not having bull low gear and sometimes the uncertainty of what gear it wants to be in. Other than that It's easy to drive, it shifts faster than a human ever could, less to worry about and less stressful drive😎

Have a fleet of new Kenworth tri axle dumps. They are all automatics. Tired of clutch's and adjustments. You did right choice

Oh my! What a beautiful addition to the already flawless fleet! Congrats on the new addition man just proves the hard work you and your guys do is paying off. Automatics are awesome if you have to truck a lot man, sure you can't be gear specific if you need it but so much less stress plus this industry is always adapting to new things and industry standards. Its great to be able to drive manual but auto is the way of the future. Congrats KWC team!
