Fight against fleshly lusts with spiritual weapons: faith and prayer. The best way to combat with sin is, upon our knees."

Thomas Watson - (ca. 1620-1686), English non-conformist Puritan preacher and author
Watson was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was noted for remarkably intense study. In 1646 he commenced a sixteen year pastorate at St. Stephen's, Walbrook. He showed strong Presbyterian views during the civil war, with, however, an attachment to the king, and in 1651 he was imprisoned briefly with some other ministers for his share in Christopher Love's plot to recall Charles II of England. He was released on June 30, 1652, and was formally reinstated as vicar of St. Stephen's Walbrook.
Watson obtained great fame and popularity as a preacher until the Restoration, when he was ejected for nonconformity. Notwithstanding the rigor of the acts against dissenters, Watson continued to exercise his ministry privately as he found opportunity. Upon the Declaration of Indulgence in 1672 he obtained a license to preach at the great hall in Crosby House. After preaching there for several years, his health gave way, and he retired to Barnston, Essex, where he died suddenly while praying in secret. He was buried on 28 July 1686.

I have tried to argue the point that John did not doubt while in prison. Unfortunately several friends of mine seem to want to see John as doubting the revelation given him. So I ask them, “How did John acquire his name?”. Was it by tradition?”. No! ..... It was by direct revelation from Gabriel to his doubting father. So, John knows, all of his life, that his father was disciplined for not believing the direct revelation given him by Gabriel. And John gets direct revelation of who the Christ is, by the Spirit landing on Him. And somehow John is cast as doubting? Really? John calls his own disciples to ask Christ a question that he knows Christ will answer. A few of John’s disciples are yet his own disciples. At one point, a few of John’s disciples state that “... and all are going to Him”, referring to Jesus. Why aren’t all of John’s disciples now disciples of Christ? Several became Christ’s disciples, but not all. Why? John knows that Christ must increase, .... but he also knows that he, himself “must decrease”. John wasn’t doubting. He knew his role and that he “must decrease”.
