You're definitely going to want to keep a small stock pile of anti-gelling diesel additive on Steve at all times. Just find a corner of a cabinet and have a couple bottles there. Worst thing that could happen is you take them out in the summer and forget to put them back in the winter. Also, adding some kind of pass through to run your engine block heater cord into the interior so you can plug it into your Jackery inside the warm living space would be a beneficial upgrade.

Good point! Once my late father, an MD, was held up at gun-point on a grocery store parking lot. The guy, who Dad said was a junky, wanted him to jump in his car and drive them both away. Back then Dad had a diesel International Scout and it was winter, so he jumped in and quickly tried to start it, by cranking the engine without warming the glow plugs. It would not start and the guy just took his cash and wine bottles from the groceries and ran off cursing. Not sure I would've had the composure to pull that off.

As for starting the diesel easier in the cold. Make sure to glow the glow plugs. Ignition on until glow light turns off. As for running out of battery during the night. I noticed you have two batterys. I recommend installing a (not really sure what is is called in English so I just directtranslated it from what we call it in Sweden) divider relay. It will divide the two batterys from each other during load. So that you can have your diesel heater running from just one of the batterys. And not draining power from the start battery. And then when you start the car the relay links the batterys again making the alternator from the engine charge both batterys.

Agreed, on old Hiaces you can hear a click and see the panel lamps brighten when they are ready - this also takes load off the battery for cranking. Also in that situation of freezing cold it's not a bad idea to carry a good, fully charged battery that's left unconnected - so any battery disasters can be recovered! I would also ensure the van battery plays no part in supplying power to the living quarters..!

So some pro tips for the nice new knives: keep the edge as long as you can by not scraping the sharp side of the blade along the board when you’re picking stuff up and make sure you fully dry them after cleaning (a lot of high end knives aren’t as rust resistant because they have higher hardness, it’s a trade off) And as much as that little sharpening gadget you have is easily portable and works ok, definitely invest in a whetstone 2 sided 1000/4000 would be my recommendation It takes a little learning but the grind on your knives specifically will be easy and there’s a ton of tutorials out there ;) Enjoy!

New diesel learning curve. Every one gets it moving from gas to diesel. The truck drivers I talked to all seem to like Power Service additive. Grey bottle for summer, white bottle for winter, and red bottle for emergency. Up in northern Minnesota you might as well put some in every time you fill up to avoid the red bottle. Fleet Farm has additive on sale quite often. I keep a bottle in the back of my truck all the time. Also check your owners manual . There should be a cold weather start procedure for the diesel motor when temp's fall below a certain degree. Gotta let them glow plugs heat up. Plug in the block heater when ever possible. Makes start up easier, and you get heat much sooner. Tell your momma Mav I said Hi!

If you go out again in Steve, take an extension cord and run it to the block heater from the Jackery but keep the Jackery inside so it stays warm. It should have enough juice to keep that block warm all night, that will help so much on the starts in cold weather. Thanks for the video. Stay warm.

A tip for you, when you stop put it in gear and stop stretching that "parking brake" cable. Some people put it in reverse but I've always put it in first. As long as you are in gear you are much more stable than being in neutral and relying on that stretched out cable applying your brakes.

A few thoughts. As others have suggested, you need two batteries. One for starting and one for the cabin, commonly referred to as the house battery. A diesel fueled air heater sips fuel. Espar or Webasto are two brands worth buying but there are lots of Chinese knock offs. There are also water heater units that can be used to preheat your engine and warm the camper at the same time. A can of ether is a great addition to your tool kit. Also known as quick start. It can kick the engine over regardless of how cold it is. I see some mods to Steve in the future......

It’s awesome you decided to make a Korean dish! For those wondering, it’s called “jook” and it’s often made for people when they’re feeling sick. Not a mechanic but a small battery shop owner over here from California, sold a couple of gel batteries for an older diesel style sprinter van, the dude spent a good amount of money on electrical component upgrades like upgraded alternator and a self trickle charge system so the battery would never lose charge if he was camping at a spot and not turning on the vehicle for a couple days & dropped the extra monies on the gel batteries from us. Your issue does sound electrical especially from all the cables all over the battery compartment, dude probably hot wired the cables and didn’t manage them just wired them to start and sell the vehicle. Just my observation from a 21 min long video 😅 love you brotha hope you get the beast running properly 🤙🏼

Being from Michigan and transplanted to Florida, I hate the cold. I think, if it was me, I'd have some insulated drapes and some reflective insulation for the windows and a thicker insulated drape for the cab opening & across the doors. Koreans usually put a couple drops only for better taste because it might be too much if you pour like that much for a meal. I love 참기름 though I would recommend putting only a little bit unless if you really really like that.
