Күн бұрын

The "Jersey Devil" has a great running flathead, and a brand new dual exhaust, it's time to refresh the brakes and take it for a spin! Steve works on going through the braking system that was actually recently replaced before the car sat. New wheel cylinders, a master cylinder and some rubber hoses and the braking system is good as new. Matt works on installing some new wide whites, and killer single bar flipper caps. Once back on the ground, Matt and Steve take it around the block for its maiden voyage!! A few more small projects to wrap up and we have ourselves a new daily driver!!

Looks and sounds great! That was the look in the late 40's and 50's. Oh the tire replacement brought back some memories for this old dog. Starting in 1959 at 14 years old I worked for my dad who had a service station and 2 bay garage. My first chores were to pump gas and fix tires. We had and old Manual tire machine! What a pain that thing was. Breaking down tires patching the tubes maybe throwing in a boot in to keep the tube from sticking out of the sidewall for 1 dollar a tire!

Don't forget to put drain holes in the exhaust pipes! Usually one 1/8" hole before and one after the rear axle on each side.

Love it, always happy to see these survivors on the road. There's nothing like the experience of being behind the wheel in one of our classic cars. The new stuff is ok, but I've never asked for nor wanted any of the tech they're coercing us the purchase today. I appreciate seeing the work you're doing to keep these cars alive and running.

Yea I wouldn't put my dad in a car with the suspension all bottomed, and no mufflers. While that works good for a 16 year old driving a civic. older people really understand that a car needs to be a pleasure to drive, and a drive has to be more than a mile or two.

Matt...you should find one of those power bleeders out of the 50s. It's a pot with 2 chambers. You fill the top with fluid and then pressurize the bottom. There is a badder separating the 2. You put an adapter on the master cylinder with a hose from the pot to the MC. The air pushes the fluid throughout the system expelling the air. My buddy and I worked nearly half a day trying to "get pedal" on my 69 GP with no success. Borrowed my friend Cary's (remember him) pot and it worked almost immediately. 😁

I love old Mercuries, as a child; my mom had a 47 sedan. 2 door that we 4 kids learned to drive on; my brother wanted so bad to hot rod it bu mom and dad said no; we lived in Devon. By the horse show grounds and serviced all of our cars at Devon Sunoco. walt Althouse was the owner at tat time. (1950-1956) Dad bought the Mercury in 1953 for mom at a used car dealer in West Philadelphia. Dad bought new Studebakers every 2 years since he traveled a lot for work, mom was a stay at home mom with 4 kids and needed the Merc for shopping etc. there was a speed shop in Berwyn. (hanks speed shop) and my brother and me use to hang out there and dream about all the parts we needed to hop up the Merc. There was also a junk yard in Paoli( slims ) we used to look around every couple weeks to see if there were any junked model A or model T fords we oiled get cheap

Hey Matt And the big "M" rides again ! Those wide whites really make a change in the appearance. I know it is an East coast car and the style is to ride low in the rear. But I grew up on the west coast and we liked the nose down and the tail up. But the body design of that year Mercury coupe kinda fits the current stance. That black paint should shine like a diamond after you buff it. In 1965 my factory black 46 Ford coupe polished out nice with Dupont rubbing compound and dupont white cream wax. Damn I wish I still had that car ! Thanx fur the Sunday update. Stay Warm, Be Safe & Well
