El Tren Maya (the Mayan Train) is a $20-billion rail route that began operations in December 2023. Connecting dozens of must-see sights across the Yucatán peninsula, it spans 1,554-kilometers or 966 miles.
The goal is to link famous tourist destinations in the Caribbean with lesser-known attractions inland, while highlighting the historic Mayan sites that give the train its name. 42 trains will carry up to three million passengers a year.
This video shows you how to buy tickets and what to expect when you take your first ride on the Tren Maya.

Thank you for posting this. I just learned about this train today, when I was researching travel options on how to get to Palenque. I've wanted to visit Palenque for years now, but I've not moved it up my priority list because it seems like it has been very difficult to reach for those of us in the US. This train seems like an answered prayer. And I've heard great things about Merida and Valladolid, too, so I guess those cities also should be included in a Southern Mexico trip. (No interest in the Caribbean beach towns ... no interest in beach towns anywhere ... just not my thing. Your video makes it seem like Cancun is the only place on the train route to be avoided. I'm OK with that.) Palenque has just zoomed up my list of places I want (and can) to visit. Way up!

Mexican here. Don't take taxis in Mexico people, specially in tourist areas, they are pretty corrupt. Stick to shuttles and buses, they are everywhere, also they are nice and affordable. If you must take a taxi stick to the ones that have "bases", not the street taxis.

The free big green bus goes to all terminals (meaning 2, 3 and 4) so look for the Tren Maya signs outside each terminal. The bus then goes straight to the Tren Maya station. It doesn't run all day but rather runs when there's a train coming or going. The schedule will be on the sign boards outside the Airport Terminal. There is also an ADO bus from Cancun main bus station that goes to the Tren Maya station (but does not go to the airport) that costs about 130 pesos. There is no First Class lounge for Clase Premier passengers at the Cancun Tren Maya station or in fact any lounge, it's an odd station with a giant roof and platforms under it. Don't think of Clase Premier as a luxury experience, it's a nicer experience, I recommend it but it's not luxury.

Thank you for this informative video, well done! I wish somehow some way all the scamming and taxi hackling could be stopped from happening at the Cancun Airport. That place is an Obsolute nightmare. Ive been to Cancun twice, n vowed never to return to that area because of that airport. This affects tourism negatively for Mexico n it really needs to stop. This Tren Maya shuttle from the airport( not sure where it takes you), could alleviate some of the stress, so something to consider if I choose to return. Thank you for mentioning that shuttle.

What a terrible experience for a new train compared to the Brightline train that opened in Florida last year. Everyone knows this train was nowhere ready to open. So why was it opened? Because AMLO wanted the grand opening to occur while he was still in office even if it wasn't ready. Shameful. The locations of the stations are ridiculous, too. No infrastructure to connect them to the nearby cities. Another badly implemented public project like the new airport at Santa Lucia where no foreign airline wants to use it because it's also in a bad location. That project was also rushed instead of doing it correctly.

Brightline in Florida? Of course it can't compare to El Tren Maya. It is tantamount to remarking that Texan Oil Refineries are way superb than Dos Bocas. Why? Because they ( Brightline and/ or Dos Bocas) are not constantly being sabotaged or incessantly attacked ( literally) by the Mexican government. If we Mexicans did this, rest assured USA 👹 would have declared war on us. Again, this shows us that USA will always keep us beaneath them so that we could never ascend to the pinnacle of superiority. We will always be inferior Mexicans.

@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams 12 күн бұрын
Riding in the back of a dump truck may be cheaper and more frequent too but that doesn't mean you will like it. The Tren Maya takes 5 hrs 47 minutes to get from Campeche to Cancun and costs 776 pesos for local turista class. There are no nice ADO buses between those cities so the ADO GL is the best that you can get and it takes 6 hrs and 35 minutes and costs 913 pesos. It takes another hour, is more cramped, the ride is bad, you can't get up and move for almost 7 hour and it costs more and there's only 2 ADO GLs per day just like the train. If you are really desperate you can take a basic ADO bus or god forbid an OCC bus and pay anywhere from 522 pesos to over 1000 and be crammed on like sardines. Yes, there are more buses per day than trains so enjoy being crammed into a bus for almost 7 hours without a break. At least that way you don't have to admit that the train has been a roaring success. Eventually the only buses left will be second class busses at which point you will quietly be taking the train pretending like you were never against it.

@@GrantMcWilliams Tell you what. Today, 3 Aug 2024, Tren Maya (TM) ridership will never be able to sustain the current operating cost. Certainly, your descriptions of ADO are somewhat accurate. My basic criticism is the TM funds could have been better spent on basic infrastructure for MX. TM stations are inconvenient. Some locals, the taxi drivers don't know the location of the stations. The overwhelmingly foreign tourist come to the Riviera Maya for sand and sun...not to trek through jungle and dust to view dusty relics. The local populace...that's like asking a New Yorker when they last visited 🗽 Sorry, TM is going to become a local commuter line. As long as ATS/SUR/ combis operate MX will take the less expensive alternative. The hotels/tour operators in Cancun/ Playa del Carmen/Tulum will arrange more convenient tours. AMLO envisioning freight traffic for TM...from where to where? How much to create the infra structure. But, come December 2024, a big financial surprise worldwide. Those entities dependent on foreign tourist dollars are in for a rude awakening. Unfortunately, the TM is a train to no where.
