Based on my experiences, I vote for mats. When the cattle load into the trailer, some of them are stressed and begin to evacuate their bowels. Often, this is runny poop which acts as a lubricant on top of wood or aluminum. When a cow is standing in this mess while the trailer is in motion, the forces on their bodies cause them to loose their balance and begin to slip around, which causes more stress which leads to more pooping. Eventually, the hooves are unable to hold a grip on the little floor ridges, and some animals eventually fall down. On a slick floor it can be difficult to get back up. The mats provide a better footing for the cows; they are able to stand and remain upright for a longer period of time. Even if one animal slips and goes down, the fall is cushioned a bit and hooves can bite into the mat on the way back up. Having the mats doesn't appear to have caused any real damage to the aluminum floor or the mats, themselves, over 20 years. Well, you did ask for my opinion!

I agree. When replacing the mats, pressure wash them as well ~ both sides. 😊😎 Awesome video today. Even with all your challenges regarding the pressure washer, I love that you can take apart a carburetor, clean it and reassemble it in a flash. Pure genius!

In addition that hard floor is liable to tear the hooves to shreds. A farm I worked at had hoof issues and when they put in mats that made a huge difference.

Hi Tyler, Yes I'd keep the mats. The cows are much more stable as you move them in the trailer. The wet manure and pee would make it too slippery for them. Love the show!

I'm always telling my wife when we watch your shows: I LOVE how Tyler *THINKS* about everything he does, not matter what it is. Those mats might be a pain, but I think they're better traction for the cattle. On the pressure washer engine: it has to suck air through the vented fuel cap. If that is plugged, it can cause the behavior you're seeing; once the partial vacuum in the fuel tank can't be drawn down anymore by intake vacuum, the engine will die.

I think the mats are there for the riding comfort of the cows. No slipping as the trailer moves in traffic etc. might be why they are such a pain to take out and put back in.

I have hauled livestock including cattle & horses in all different sized trailers, with & without mats. I much prefer having mats in the trailer. Much less animals scrambling around slipping and sliding, much safer for them plus is easier to haul when they are still & not rocking & rolling the trailer. Mats also protect the metal floor from getting damaged & act as shock absorption on the legs. I put shavings on top of the mats to soak up urine, catch manure, decreases slipping on wet mats & it makes clean out with a shovel or stall fork much easier after every trip.

Good gracious FT, a really fun video. Always enjoy the critters. You are so meticulous in caring for them. I’m not much of a mechanic, but when I experienced that behavior in a small engine I came down on the side of a bad valve. Fortunately, not the case here. BTW, I’ve been going back through your videos, and finished the videos about the build of the feed wagon. Fascinating, and so entertaining; I couldn’t wait for the next episode. What you need Tyler, is some Nitrous oxide for that pressure washer.....gets the job done in half time. LOL. Glad everybody is back where they belong and you are hopefully on the backside of that pink eye. What a pain. Trailer looks great, but now I feel the need to do the driveway. I'm no cattle hauler, but I would keep the mats for safety sake. For the cows, and for stabilizing the trailer to prevent shifting if they fall. Slippery when wet. Those groves go the wrong way.

I agree with everyone that the mats make for less slipperiness under hoof = less injuries and less traumatic travelling = happier animals who will be easier to load. On your pressure washer, is there an HT electric cable with a "hat" (in South Africa we call it a lead) that fits on to the one side of your spark plug? If so, check that that is healthy. Luv your videos ❤❤

With you being in California, you need to check if it has a vent line that has a charcoal filter. You would see the vent line coming off your air cleaner running to the charcoal canister with another line going from the canister to your fuel tank. Being California is strict on gas engines it may have the charcoal canister. The charcoal vibrates around and can stop the flow of air through the canister. Being the carburetor is gravity-fed, the gas leaving your gas tank needs to be replaced with air, or your carb will starve for fuel, run rough, and die. If it starts to run rough again loosen your gas cap so it gets air. Even if you don't have the charcoal canister it could be a clogged vent line.
