It’s a big one today - how every monarch from 1066 up to today got their bum on the big seat. This is based on audience requests in the comments section of the video before last. I do hope it will end up being useful for people to refer to…

What court languages were actually spoken in the succeeding dynasties?

And the current representatives of the Stuart lineage are descended from Charles I's daughter Henrietta Anne, who married Philippe, Duc d'Orleans, brother of Louis XIV, so ofc they would've been Catholic too.

Thank you Dr Kat. I was grateful for this masterly summing up of what I learned at school, but which had become hazy in my mind. With regard to the future, it seems that you are happy for us to continue with the monarchy for generations to come. However as I get older, I become more and more convinced that this country will never be mature and will never find a viable niche in the world until we lose the burden of tradition and become a republic. Of course we wouldn't want to reproduce something like the damp squib of the interregnum. I'd favour something like the Irish system, replacing the monarch with a democratically elected non-political head of state with a limited period in office.

Thank you for this informative video. The information prior to Henry V was most helpful to me personally as I have just never had a firm grasp on that part of history. I did note with interest your making a distinction between a monarch "ruling" or "reigning." I would enjoy a video providing more information about that distinction, when it came to be, etc. (I'm an American, so that part of British history is a bit fuzzy for me, I'm afraid). As always, very well done and enjoyable, and for that I thank you so much. And happy birthday to sweet Gabriel!

Loved this video! I would like to see a part 2 on how some of the monarchs were related to their spouses (with many being cousins etc) and how some monarchs had double lines of inheritance. Edward IV for example, both his mother and father were descended from Edward III. I believe Henry VIII and Jane Seymour were related? Both descended from Edward III?
@ReadingthePast
@ReadingthePast 2 жыл бұрын
Henry was related to all of his wives to varying degrees as they could all claim descent from Edward I - this is a great idea for a future video! It’s going on the list, thank you 🌟

@@ReadingthePast Oooh interesting. I wasn't aware of that.....actually, maybe I was aware of Katherine of Aragon's descent through an Isabella of Castille possibly? Heads off to Wikipedia etc.....😊🤔

Edward IV was descended from Edward III in three ways. Edward III had five sons: Edward, Lionel, John, Edmund, and Thomas; respectively the Dukes of Cornwall, Clarence, Lancaster, York, and Gloucester. Lionel had a daughter whose daughter married the Earl of March (the reason Edward inherited this same title). It was through this line that the House of York claimed seniority in the succession to the throne. Edward's father's father was the son of the Duke of York. Additionally, as you say, Edward was descended from Edward III as well because his mother was the daughter of Joan Beaufort. Joan was the natural daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. Henry VII's mother was a Beaufort. Her grandfather was the full brother of Joan Beaufort. Thus, Margaret (and Edward's) grandson Henry VIII was descended from Edward III four ways.

I’ve really enjoyed this video! I’ve always been fascinated with the line of descent of our Kings and Queens and the family tree in general, so this summarises it together wonderfully! I look forward to your next video! Have you done a video about Eleanor of Aquitaine before? I think she would be a fascinating queen to focus on!

When the movie 'The King' came out I went down the Kings of England rabbit hole because while I knew from a google search he was meant to represent King Henry V somehow it was unsatisfactory not to understand where he stood in the line. So then you're into the War of the Roses and you can't figure out why Hendry VIII claimed a link back to some other king unless you begin to know the names of the kings before him and suddenly you're six feet deep in Henrys, Richards, Edwards - Tudors, Hanovers, and Windsors and it's been three weekends and dozens of tabs to Wikipedia before you sort it all out and finally understand where Henry V came into things Needless to say I found this fascinating - thank you so much - it is always a joy to hear you talk.

I'm a foreigner and never had proper schooling in English/British history (apart from the greatest hits like 1066, war of roses, henry VII, elisabeth, cromwell etc). This video is awesome because in my mind the rulers were more removed from each other than this video proves. For a long time we had free election of a king in my country, so seeing this family tree and the line of succession seems so straightforward. Great video, thank you.
