When you have a new puppy, safe socializing is important. Something to consider is taking a pup to outdoor cafes or restaurants. When you do it right, there are many benefits. But if done badly, your puppy could end up overwhelmed or having a bad experience and becoming fearful. I’m covering all the steps to grow your puppy’s confidence when dining out at a pet-friendly venue so you can enjoy a coffee or meal with family and friends.

Exactly how I trained Miss Maci!! (14 month old Aussie) So fun to take her not only to area outdoor restaurants but to other friend's houses and enjoy visiting while Maci rests comfortably in her HZ!! Thank you Susan... amazing podcast as always!!

Great advice again. It does seem this is only possible once the puppy knows some crate games and has learned to settle on a place and is fully vaccinated. I wonder if it would be usefull to bring your puppy with you to restaurants before it's fully vaccinated in a closed stroller untill the puppy knows settle. One could also open the stroller half way to fade it out as we teach the puppy to settle. Ofcourse you only take the puppy if it isn't anxious and you only stay for a short time the first time.

Such great tips and how your courses set puppies up for success :) Fully agree about public water sources being a risk for transmitting disease. My dogs even get their own water bottle whenever we leave the house because I'm like Mad-Eye Moody - "constant vigilance!"

I so wish I’d known this when I got my nervous anxious puppy. I have saved this for a next puppy whenever that may be but for now I keep listening, learning and doing what I know and feel is right for my 12 year old puppy.

I'm lucky enough to live in a rural area where there are plenty of picnic spots. I found taking a picnic to a quiet place was a great introduction to eating outside. My puppy is thoroughly spoiled at local cafes as they swoop on her and give her biscuits and cuddles. No wonder she loves eating out.

Love the chair idea! Just went to a restaurant to eat dinner but half way through I put him back in the car crate as it was too overwhelming. Which turned out for the best because he relaxed and so did we. Came back home and watched your video and I actually feel good 👍

This is exactly how I ended up training Bessie for our big trip. She was a perfect angel at restaurants in spite of the loud music and people. She just lay at my feet most of the time. Her only issue was was a new dog arrived (not near us), she had to bark once maybe to warn them. I loved this podcast. It's so helpful .

My dog is an old hand at dining outside. That said, I can see a few ways to spiff up her behaviors although she is generally very good. Gotta hand it you Susan, you keep coming up with relevant topics for us. Here, I just got these freshly baked vegan chocolate chip cookies at that nice little neighborhood cafe for you... 😉🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

My puppy is a service dog in training, this is just what we do for teaching them to be unobtrusive in public! I haven't used a chair before, that's a great idea for helping them be successful. It's still really hot down here in south Texas, so I usually just take a flat bath mat-- I'll try it with a crate bed instead! A small battery operated fan is sometimes just the thing, too but YES bringing your own water bowl is a MUST. Lol any time you're out with your dog is going to draw attention, but I just roll up the bed in a yoga mat strap and make sure my dog is comfortable. Nothing embarrassing about it! 😀

I have a 3 year old golden doodle that much of her young life was COVID stay at home. She gets stressed in new environments or lots of people. I’ve already done things wrong. CN I follow this same model to build her confidence? We want to buy an RV and take her with us on the road, so hoping to help her be more adventurous.

Excellent video. Getting my puppy ready to go on vacation with us this winter and we have been introducing patio training very much in the manner you’ve described. We started training in the spring and I asked myself how would Susan do it and I think I was able to channel your energy and plan how we were going to make it happen So much appreciation for what you do.

My not-a-puppy-anymore did exactly that - recently, and me being pregnant! - while a long line was wrapped around my ankle she rushed off towards someone she thought was my spouse (he is ONE friggin' distraction I seem to be unable to fade into the white noise) and guess what happened. 🤦‍♀ I could have killed her at that moment, and now I have a lifetime reminder in shape of an ugly scar from burnt skin. And until recently, no matter what I did (and I busted my *ss to do it) to raise her confidence everywhere we went, she'd scream if I leave her in a cafe (even though she's with that same spouse that otherwise makes me become a background noise! -_- ) like crazy; and she still "goes dumb" (stressed and not being reachable by cues) when I raise my voice (not at her, it's the issue of me being raised along nearly-deaf people so I mostly yell when I talk), or when I am jokingly angry! 😮‍💨 Btw. we started taking her to restaurants only this summer, and she was 1 y.o. in March, and I instinctively did all the stuff you recommend doing (like I did them with my previous girl, too).

Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge, I’m currently working on crate games and target practices. If you ever have a chance to touch on how to use your techniques to stop a young female dog from squatting anytime someone reaches down to pet her, she even does it with me sometimes, it doesn’t seem like fear but maybe, it’s more excitement and seems unconscious. Love your work so much!

Aloha and thanks for all your content Susan! I'm having a hard time training focus/obedience around other dogs for my 10 month old BC. He does great around helper dogs we've practiced with, but falls apart with new dogs and dogs (I assume) he understands he can't/won't greet (some frustration maybe). I fear I will never be able to have him off leash for hikes/runs, which I do a lot of in Hawaii. Would LOVE a podcast on hypersocial dogs where seemingly the most reinforcing thing is playing with another dog. I play the LAT game, but he's a smart dog and I know he understands on vs off leash. How can I gauge when his off leash skills will be just as reliable?

I love all of this advice. My guy is a very confident, overly friendly 5-year-old Viszla (especially around other dogs.) Organized classes have always been a challenge for us and we are still a work in progress. Crate games, hot zone, and Its Yer Choice have always been part of our training. I use the frequent treat method, but he is a copious drooler. Just the thought of food gets the waterworks going. At dog classes, I'm constantly mopping. Practicing at a cafe is a very messy activity and I have stopped treating. Any ideas?

Thank you for this! I have a question, not directly about Cafe outings, but about a step before that....to make cafes and ALL puppy socialization and games go more smoothly- How do you get your puppy to stop biting at their leash? And how long does that take? Days? Weeks? I've had about 4 foster puppies and they all LOVE to bite at their leashes, making some training games harder/less smooth. Especially once the game involves more duration and calm time (versus the initial high engagement/high rate of reward/ faster paced games. But even with those they still often get leash-bitey). Do you already have a video on that? Or any good tips? Thank you!

Honestly, when you do it this way most people don't even notice the puppy LOL. However, I have said things like "she's in training now, so this isn't a good time for her to greet people."

Does their come a time when rough play lessens in a puppy! My 4 month old and 6 year old play pretty rough and my adult dog does tell the puppy sometimes to knock it off but sometimes one or the other is just getting to be too rough ....or they both might be ....and then I interrupt. Right now I feel like I may never be able to have them both free in the house at the same time 😢

If your puppy is unhappy while you are dining out, the solution is not to crate it in your car. Please. Leave the restaurant and try again later. And before opting for that, try making your puppy's experience at the restaurant better by, say, ordering it a grilled chicken breast.

I think that using a chair is an awesome idea especially for a larger dog. Perhaps if you have tiny puppy a crate would work but you're going to want to get to the point where you can stop for coffee or a meal with your dog laying beside you anytime. Can you imagine dragging a crate big enough for a St. Bernard! 😳

@@ammi_10 lol yes of course I guess I was just thinking about young small puppies when they’re 8 to 12 weeks old it’s just good for them to socialize and be out a lot and get used to people and noises etc. And perhaps at such a early age they haven’t learned to be staying in one place for so long so the crate could help that.

@@lorihoffman6150 I actually wouldn't take baby puppies to public places where I don't have that much control over the environment. A lot of people turn a puppy's concerns and worries into fears that way.🙄 Another one of those times when less is more.😉

Hi Susan! I recall you using "search!" as a release + find food on the ground. In this case the pup is NOT released. That seems contradictory and possibly confusing to the pup. Can you help me understand what's going on here?

Hi @Caleb Jares, it's used when the treat is dropped into the bed the puppy is in ("search" is permission to find the thrown/tossed treat so suits the context). If you wanted puppy to leave the bed you could use 'break'. There's a lot of nuances to release cues / location specific reinforcement markers, if you'd like a bit of a deep dive discussion, we'd love to look at all the scenarios together with you in Recallers or Home School the Dog. - Sharon

Sharon is correct…I would say search and toss the cookie into the bed…not outside of if for sure!
