ONE OF THE REASONS WHY I HATE WORKING TO WORK AT WALMART when applying as a candidate. Their online application ask for what is your availability to work and NOT to work, I checked out Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday that i'm available to work, and I'm NOT AVAILABLE TO WORK on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.. And guess what happens next? I got a phone call for an interview on Monday (which is the day i'm not available because I have another part time job and school to attend. I called them and reschedule on Wednesday instead... And guess what did the manger do? he wanted Tuesday instead (Which is also the day i'm not available)......SO WHAT IS THE POINT OF WALMART ASKING FOR AVAILABILTY IF THEY WANT ALL CANDIDATES TO BE FLEXIBLE AND AVAILABLE ALL THE TIME???......... IT'S STEWPIPD! WHAT'S THE POINT OF THEM MAKING THAT AVAILABILTY SHEET ON THEIR HIRING WEBSITE, IF THEY ONLY WANT TO MESS AROUND WITH THE ASSOCIATES SCHEDULE! by given split days off, and a day where you have to close at 11 pm and then work 7 am on the following day, its called "CLOPEN" and Walmart will not hire candidates who are not available 24/7.. So that answers the question, Walmart has the lame system of giving split days off and CLOPEN schedule.

Another big thing with retail is how even on your days off, work will call you and ask if you can come in. Even on your days off, you're still on call to them, and that stressed me out knowing my managers were almost guaranteed to call me on at least one of my days off.

Caller ID, don't answer let it go to voice mail. They will either: Not leave a voicemail and call someone else. Leave a voicemail revealing their intentions for you to ignore as it's your day off. Or keep calling you which at that point you turn your phone to vibrate or off...let that sucker ring they don't own you.

If they try to say I didn't cone in when scheduled I have my pro t outs yo prove what I HAD BEEN SCHEDULED.. If they change it and not tell ME. That's on them. 3 I don't go in on days off PERIOD. To me, part of the reason that Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby are so successful is because their employees have Sundays off. Even if it's only one day off, having one CONSISTENT day off per week does wonders for employee morale. I personally believe that if you have a scheduled day off and you get called in to work, you should be paid overtime wage at minimum. Also, working Friday nights, Saturday nights, and all day Sunday should carry a premium too; maybe not overtime wage, but at least 15% to 25% above normal wage.

Agreed. I worked for a mom and pop shop which was a Mexican deli/grocery store and my days off were always the same. I had consistency and time to do what I needed to outside of work. Now switching to retail my days off vary to the point I work 8 days straight until my next day off. They started doing this to me as soon as I told them I’m pregnant and needed a bit more hours. But it’s to the point I feel like they’re not being considerate to my situation (I suffer with severe nausea and when I take “too many” bathroom breaks it becomes an issue. )Everyone gets mad they’re unable to find me on the floor when I have to go puke. Every time. And I got so many lazy coworkers that do the bare minimum and don’t get scolded by managers but for some reason every little thing I do is criticized (they even will state it through the walkies we carry, it’s embarrassing) they pick on the ones who work the hardest and let the slackers fuck off. And I feel stuck at this job because I’m 4 months into my pregnancy and afraid other places will reject me for that reason.

It's been scientifically proven that people with consistent scheduling with two days off are happier and more productive. Why is it not considered a crime?

Because corporations got greedy. At one point business weren’t even open on Sundays. Of course someone did it, which means they’re ahead of their competitors so everyone else did it to stay competitive. And in my town within the two years, they rendered all holidays (but Christmas) useless. Businesses are now allowed to be open on them if they want AND if you’re scheduled you’re stuck with it. Which is also crazy because we created an entirely new holiday some years prior called “Family Day” for the sole purpose of having another holiday, yet was made irrelevant from that change. Before, people could opt-in/out if they wanted to work on holidays, but they don’t have a choice now. Christmas is the only holiday guaranteed off, but I’m sure they’ll wear that down at eventually. The movie theatres have been doing it forever. Thankfully I left around the time that was being introduced. Can you imagine if stores were closed on Sundays again? There would be riots. If a grocery store is closed for one day (or has shortened hours) people go mental, stocking up food as if there’s an apocalypse. If you didn’t have enough food saved (especially knowing whatever holiday was coming) then I question how you’ve made it this far in life.

Gas stations are the worst, if someone doesn’t show up for the shift after yours you’re stuck with working a double. I eventually made demands where I work that I was unwilling to open the day after closing and I needed one consistent day off every week. I believe it’s actually illegal to have someone open after they closed the night before. Something like you’re not allowed to schedule another shift within 10-12 hours of the previous one. It still happens of course because it’s retail, it sucks, and they don’t always have enough people or the person scheduling screws up/doesn’t care.

My old job was 49 hours a week, 6 days a week. Was overnight so I'd get off Saturday morning and be back Sunday night. Sometimes they'd make us work that 7th day so we'd be working 13 days in a row, sometimes even 20.. also had a 6 point system, if you call in that's a point, if you're late that's half a point, 6 points you're fired. exactly. we call it "wait mode" where you know you have do something in a few hours, so your brain just kind of shuts down the ability to focus on anything, it just wants to wait so you can do the thing you have to do. that's what a night shift morning feels like. you want to do things, but simply cant, because you're mentally ready to go to work.

Everything you said is absolutely true. You can't schedule doctor appointments, or rather, you can but knowing you might have to cancel or reschedule. Same for salon appointments, family time, etc. Regarding paychecks; I never know how much I'll get paid. I don't even know if my pay is accurate because we don't receive a pay stub. Another side effect is it messes with your ability to remember what day of the week it is, or what the date is. I have to look at a calendar every day to ground myself in reality.

MGTOW MORNINGS I’m fine with 8 hours. 6 is probably as much as you can do while still being productive (and sometimes you need certain people around, but meetings take up their time). But I’d rather have a third day off than shorter hours. A 4h work day is likely never going to happen or count as full time (depends how bad we screw ourselves with automation). Let’s assume we could do 6h. Getting off at 3pm instead of 5pm really does nothing. You’ll likely just have a bit more time to do chores than normal (or without being rushed) but not actually time to relax. But a third day means you could have plans, do chores, and have a day for yourself. With 2 you’re juggling between them and most likely something will be sacrificed. Especially when it comes to holidays, there’s 2 sides of the family so both days are taken. Or the kids have some event going on (birthday, sports, whatever). Or life happens (someone’s moving, died, getting married, having a baby, etc.). 3 days really gives you that buffer zone no matter what. It’s way too easy to fill those 2 days. And there’s really only 1 where you can have a break, Saturday. You can go to bed whenever you want on Friday, but you still don’t have much time or energy to do a whole lot, and Sunday night you have to go to bed early for Monday.

@@mrshmuga9 Old comment, but one of my friends works as a nurse or something related (I don't remember exactly what) with this in mind. He works 16 hour days, but only works 3 days a week. I would rather do that than work normal hours. I also prefer graveyard or evening shifts. I'm a night owl at heart, and I worked a late shift job temporarily in 2020. I worked from 6 PM to 1 AM and I loved those hours. I hate getting up before 8 AM and it really kills my productivity and mood if I do. I had a 2nd job because there was nothing else to do, but I lived 5 minutes from this one and started at 10 AM. I would get up at 9:30 and go straight there. I'd leave at 4:30-5 since it was slow (I usually had a lot of time for personal stuff), grab a late lunch, and drive to job 2 since there was a lot of traffic, and I'd just eat in the car. By the time I got off, traffic was nonexistent, which was really good because this job was in a major city notorious for traffic, but it paid well. And when I was tired after work, I could beeline straight home in 25 minutes and be in bed after. Had 2 days off, although we had the option of overtime at the late job if we wanted it. I had nothing better to do, so I almost always took it.

That “Saturday feeling” you are talking about is exactly why the 5 day, Monday to Friday work week is the norm in the world and has been for a long time. I do not have the traditional Monday thru Friday work week and do not have two consecutive days off. I actually like having my days off spread out. BUT the catch is the Saturday work is chaotic to any field of work, whether you are Nurse, a Police Officer, an Engineer, an Automotive Technician, a Restaurant Chef, a Retail Employee, a Bartender, etc etc.. Everything sux when working on Saturday.

I work at guitar center and it's felt like this for the past six months since I got promoted. While I am promised a consistent schedule, I can't have two days off in a row because the other managers aren't willing to change their schedules around, and our two most valuable employees are constantly going on vacation so while I have the same schedule, I come to work every day wondering who the hell I am closing with because the managers are moving everyone else around to cover their vacation time, which sometimes results in them screwing up the schedule and only scheduling two people to close. And they always wanna go on vacation when there is a big sale going on!

Coming to this 3 year old video after nearly hitting my 1 year anniversary for my current retail job, and... yeah, it's fucking hell. In the last month we've had two people quit (three in two months, too) leaving the amount of people to cover the floor at all times to basically just four people - one of which is a minor, so with school starting back up, realistically only 3 people. We're all basically pulling 10-11 hour shifts every day, some of us working a closing shift and then an opening shift back into a closing shift for the whole week, which basically just turns you into a fucking zombie. It's miserable. (it's not a big corporation store, it's a small town game/candy shop fyi.)

I made very little on the weekends.

I worked at a Papa John's for 3 years as a driver. I got into the closing shift early in my time there and stuck with it. I did open a few times, but I am not a morning person and my GM knew that, so she didn't ever push me since I was a solid closer and our store's top driver. Once the district manager did pay me extra to come in early to let in some maintenance people, but because the store was closed, I just had to make sure they got in and that the door was locked behind them, so I got paid to nap for 2 hours or so.

Now they have a teaming schedule at Walmart where you have a set schedule. You can do 4-1, 9-6, or 1-10. When I was an assistant manager at subway in college that’s how it was as I never knew when the store manager would schedule me, I never had set days. I’m currently at Walmart for now and I work 9-6 Tuesday - Saturday. That’s so true you never recover and you’re never relaxed when you don’t have a set schedule. No way I could do that now, I was in my early 20s when I managed the subway. I never knew if closers would show up too as I would stay late and I’ve pulled open to closes before when I worked there as did the store manager. At least I got over time. I think Walmart is different now as you are guaranteed 40 hours at Walmart now with a teaming schedule, but that’s how they make you work the hours that they want. They are stingy with who they let become a full time associate though. We get 21 days of PTO if you’ve worked there from 0-2 years which goes up the more you’ve worked there. Btw my degree is in education, which first year teachers, and honestly every job on the market at this point, now pays the same as Walmart. I know many ex teachers who say they’d rather work at Walmart as the pay is basically the same. It’s not the worst job I’ve ever had. Also, I don’t know if this policy was set in place when you worked there, but their is a policy that states employees must not work more than 6 days in a row, unless the employee consents, so if they do that to you you can request a day off from personnel and they have to do it. When I first started working at subway before I was a manager, the old manager would schedule people almost two weeks in a row without any over time as it was in different work weeks. When you’re young you don’t even question anything, you just do it I guess.

I'm not getting any hours at my job rn (1 or 2 shifts a week) because it's the slow season until black Friday picks up, but I'm a full time college student so that's okay. I used to work as a sales associate at Under Armour (it was fine but the customer service aspect could be a pain) but now I'm working at PetSmart and I honestly love it so much because I'm a pet care specialist so I don't deal with customers very much unless I'm on register. Even when I'm on register, 95% of customers are chill and super friendly, which is amazing. I also work at Under Armour again but this time as a stock associate meaning I come in early in the morning before the store even opens and don't deal with customers at all. 😂

I work an office job part-time and retail part-time. I have a consistent schedule for my office job--a solid eight hours on the same two days each week. My retail job ruins everything, though. I'm lucky to get the same amount of hours each week, but I work all different shifts--opening, mid-, and closing--and I almost never have two consecutive days off. It drives me mad. I agree completely with what you said about closing shifts. My mornings are wasted when I have a closing shift--all that I can think about is getting ready for work. I don't think it's unusual to feel that way. I wonder, too, if maybe you can discuss sometime what it was like trying to find a job after you graduated from college. I'm a recent grad, and I managed to get the part-time office job that I mentioned before, but I've been applying for full-time positions since February of this year and have had no luck at all. It hasn't even been very long since I graduated, but it seems that I'll be stuck in Retail Hell forever at this point. It's so discouraging. Always enjoy your content. Cheers.

Toxic work environment, dead end, future draining, all in all the juice ain't worth the squeeze. I've got tremendous empathy for people who feel stuck in these jobs. I actually prefer split days off because it gives me a little more control of what I’m walking into when I come in after I’ve had a day off, if I have two days off in a row, my area has completely 180ed and I have to pick up the slack from what people didn’t do while I was gone. Biggest issue I’ve had with Walmart so far is that they’ve given me a dm position temporarily until they do interviews, and instead of giving me a temporary pay raise- they put it as my secondary job code. Hopefully they do some interviews soon because I’m not trying to work holidays with DM responsibilities without getting paid for it.

I'm convinced that these places do this shit on purpose. I remember that for the four years I worked at O'Reilly, I had just one month that I had a consistent schedule, monday through friday, at the same times, and how an asshole coworker fucked me out of it because my manager wouldn't give him my days off. Mostly, it was up to 6 day weeks (with split days off if I somehow was working only 5, but a lot of times I'd lose at least one) where I would regularly work 16 plus day stretches because other coworkers would call out on my one day off that week, so I'd lose my day off and not get it back.
