yea its kinda stupid when people say "oh your job is easy with that machine" dude we need that machine to do the job, Walmart is the busiest Retail Company, doing 10 carts by hand isn't enough for 500 people coming in and out of the store at all times, especially during the holidays.

Worked as a 'cart attendant' at Target for much of the past year. Been through the best and worst of the job. They work the hell out of you when it's busy, and we had to do so much more than just carts and carry-outs. Pick up re-shop and clothes hangers from the cashiers, distribute baskets around the store, stock the spill stations/clean up spills, take out the trash from the cans in front of the store, help 'guests' in general if they ask you questions or need help, and they call you to be a backup cashier all the time because they dont schedule enough a lot of the time. But the worst is that they also make cart attendants clean bathrooms too.. And those could be downright disgusting quite often.. They expect you to do just about everything, and get it all done by yourself. Not to mention the weather can suck ass sometimes. And you get paid the exact same as cashiers and everyone else, while doing far more work.. Shit got pretty stressful some days..

im a cart pusher and the biggest issue i face is being scheduled alone or with people who don't want to do the job. It makes it so much harder when you don't have one other person who is competent working the other end of the lot, so once you fill one side up you have to run to the other because it is getting low again. That is so stressful to me and puts a lot of wear on my body. I don't like using the cart machine, so I do them all by hand, and every other co-worker of mine uses the machine, so if I'm pushing in more carts by hand than you are with the machine it gets frustrating as hell. I love the job when I have help, because it's not as stressful mentally and physically. Sure, customers still suck and all that, but it makes the day a lot easier with one person to help. The problem is if you show them that you CAN do it all by yourself, they'll start to put you by yourself often because they know that you CAN do it, no matter how much of a toll it is taking on you. EDIT: i made this comment halfway into the video and towards the end he made this exact same point. I guess it is a common theme for Wal-Mart to just not schedule enough people for carts.

I hated working on carts when i first started but after doing so many other jobs in a grocery store sometimes i wish i was back on them. I never had to deal with managers and never had a bad experience with a customer. Sometimes they even tried to tip us when we helped them to their car, which we weren't technically suppose to take but... ya know.

I'm a Walmart cart crew member,at my store, we usually walk 7-9 miles on a slow day, but weekends are 9- 11 miles, holidays are 10+ for an 8-9 hour shift, we have just like every other Walmart, a north and sough depot, but we do it differently because of how the parking lot and store are laid out for gm, we will typically swing it when going up between rows 4-2 and grocery between 11-13 depending on the size of our loads, we secretly have our specialties on our lot we find by doing the job, some of us are versatile haulers, Twinkie loaders or long and heavy haulers (I'm a versatile) taking all manor of loads. as for the horn on the controller, we have secret language with it as well as hand signs when working in teams. (1 horn means go...2 horns means stopping/stop... twirling above the head means to speed up/slow down...hand up means stop...) I found a way around the "no headphones/earbuds" rule and got a Bluetooth speaker using it on the lot, you can listen to your music as loud as you please and still hear them as well as traffic, it also helps pass the time when out there, and adds the bonus of brightening the customer's day, I also keep a battery bank on me to keep my phone and speaker charged, for the rain depending on how bad it its, they will either keep us out there or bring us in to do re-shop (putting stuff back on the shelves when its deemed "resealable" or whats brought up from them zoning that was in the wrong place, otherwise we would hang and use the excuse that the machines need to be charged if they questioned us when the lot was good to "ok" (show is a different story, risky and dangerous, ill cover that later for anyone who has seen my last post on this topic)

The rabbit and turtle signs on machinery involving some sort of speed or movement is a pretty standard industry practice, like I am shocked neither of you have seen that before other than this one instance. Many lawn mowers and weed whackers and other common things have indicators just like this. It's a universal way to convey the message of fast and slow, its much smarter than doing it in one exclusive language.

I work cart crew at a grocery store. here's one of the most annoying things I encounter on a near daily basis: we stock our big carts on the porch, and our smaller carts just inside the door. Its been this way for a long time now. People will walk up to the big carts, look around, see no small carts, cause they're inside, like they've always been, grab a big cart, walk in the door, discover the small carts, and then just abandon their big cart and make it my problem. it would take them literally 10 seconds to put their big cart back where they found it.

When I was there as a cashier and they only scheduled 2 cart crew people they would have me cover for the cart guy on his lunch. My issue was instead of being shown how to use the machine they gave me a rope. So instead of grabbing 20 to 40 carts at a time I would be able to get 10 at most and I would constantly be taking carts back to the store from halfway down the parking lot. The only problem I had with it was that they expected me to do exactly what the cart guys did while they were gone with less experience and having to waste more time going back and forth. That and I would be out there in the summer wearing long pants sweating like a dog and it was torture, but other than that it was better than dealing with idiot customers all day

Worst parts of cart retrieval: People using carts a trash cans (especially dirty diapers left to cook in the sun), late nights (especially after they started making the poor cart attendants stay behind and help zone the store after the carts were taken care of when the store closed), not having working equipment, getting called in for multiple carry-outs at the back of the lot, lack of appreciation, and that one customer/guest who right at closing takes their cart to their car parked alone at other end of the lot Best parts: Not being tied to a register, less draining, freedom to take breaks whenever if caught up, physical exercise, getting paid (it was my first real job, after all) and most of all, not having push the store credit card on people! I worked at Target many years ago back when I was in college, and I started out as a cart attendant before I was cross trained in other areas. Despite the heat (being in Florida) and physical work, it wasn't horrible and it did have its perks (the unlimited ice water from Food Avenue helped). When I worked carts, I was usually scheduled by myself, except during peak seasons (Christmas holidays and back-to-college) when multiple people were scheduled, often temporary help. On top of cart retrieval, there were also carry-outs (I often knew more about how to fold the seats in people's cars than they did), checking the bathrooms hourly - usually just the men's (unless they find a "surprise" in the ladies' room - when I usually had to clean up), running back hangers and defective merchandise, stocking the registers and spill stations (I think I may have helped the store avoid a potential disaster during a power outage, because I actually made sure they all had working flashlights in the pre-smartphone era) Being a busy store, I sometimes wonder how I got everything done, especially when the cart mover stopped working (either a dead battery or a missing/broken remote) and I had to single handedly bring them in by hand. I remember once working a busy day by myself without a working cart mover and needed to clock out for a lunch break. Because of this, the store ran low on carts inside and they had to get people from the floor to bring them in. Although I was legally required to take breaks, I felt so guilty after that that I often missed them if I believed that I would fall too far behind or there wasn't enough coverage.

carry outs and carry ins, counting cans, general can room mainenance, propane exchange, and the idiocy of customers that see one cart in the lot and write you up. It depends on the location honestly. But the cart crew in our store had to be the worst position. A lot of it had to do with terrible schedule managers and unrealistic expectations. But heres an accurate job description if you're thinking about being a stockman. Cons: Piss bottles constantly. Both ran through the can machines and in the carts. dirty diapers. 2 liter bottles full of heroin needles. carts overflowing with household trash that people will bring from home. 6 wheelers full of food caked all over them from children. being the only guy on for the entire day having to cover all positions simultaniously. the heat waves and cold fronts bringing feet of unplowed snow which brings its own mountain of difficulties. During the summer, you get major crotch rot and risk serious infection. One of my friends had to go to the hospital because a crotch rot infection had spread to his blood. During the winter, the snow makes it impossible to push more then 2 carts at once so the bays are always empty and everyones getting write ups. Not a lot of people last through the winter here. I didnt. the terrible managers that would make everything harder for no reason. asshole customers that pull right in front of your 30 cart line forcing you to try and stop the rest of the line from snaking and swiveling into cars or people. Drivers will have no care in the world for your existence. so if you see someone backing up, stop because they wont. the lack of water and supplies for our position. Anything eaten or drank in our position came out of our paychecks. the constant pages into the store or can room to the point where the carts outside would run out because im not god and therefore not omnipresent. skipping lunches because of no call no shows. Every week theres always a few guys that come and go. Stockman position in our store has the highest turnover rate of any job in our entire town. almost getting hit by idiotic drivers to the point where one of my coworkers got hit twice in one week. I wore a bright yellow and white reflective windblocker in the middle of the night once and still was inches from getting hit. Pros: A good workout everyday. Youll get in shape. A coworker brotherhood. Your position bonds together pretty strongly because of how much you all gotta deal with. On the days that theres more than on guy on at least. All this while cap 2 in store shoppers get paid $16 an hour to bullshit half the day until 4pm.

When I was a cashier at Wal-Mart, I would always be the one to get sent out to help the cart crew when they were shorthanded (most of the other cashiers were young girls, you just CAN'T send them out there because they're fragile and will just fall apart). At first I hated doing it, mainly because of the heat. When it started to cool off after I had worked there a while, I started preferring it. You didn't have to deal with nearly as many shitty customers and people mostly just left you alone. There was no one constantly breathing down your neck either. In an odd way, you have some level of freedom. If the weather is nice, I'd absolutely agree that cart crew can be a more enjoyable job than working inside. I imagine working in the back might be the same. I should have done that. I hate cashiering, and I have learned to really hate most Wal-Mart shoppers.

When I used to work there, the mouth breathers in the evening, when filling the garage would go full speed into the wall (the wall kind of stuck out a few feet where the doors were) and I swear to God the bricks on the outside of the wall were all cracked and the mortar was all fucked up. The garage door was hit and broken many times. I worked with 4 year olds. And on when it starts raining halfway through a line I remember once we knew it was going to start pissing on a biblical level and we tried to squeeze in one more, and of course we're at the end of the lot when it starts and we just left the line and machine there and we booked it to one of the corrals that had a roof and chilled in there for half an hour. It was cold and windy. But at least we weren't wet. Man your two man strategy seems effective as fuck. When we were two guys we wouldn't split up to work faster, we would just both follow the machine and shoot the shit. Talking with colleagues was the only thing that made the job bearable.

I worked carts at Menards (midwest home improvement) for about 6 years where there were no mules, about 8 different types of carts, and a lot of the same stories I hear on this. And being a home improvement, carryouts could be absolutely constant. Oh boy, do I have stories there
@brianmiddleton2956
@brianmiddleton2956 3 жыл бұрын
Did the same thing for Home Depot. Nothing but a constant stream of people making all their demands. Weekends were brutal. I could tell many stories too. People think they are being helpful if you have 20 carts and are pushing them and someone tried to put a cart on the end. It wouldn't go in completely so you had to stop you momentum you had with your 20 already, plus my parking lot was on an angle so you can imagine the remaining carts woud come apart and id have to catch those too. Just put your cart in the coral and someone wil be by to get it on the next run. Plus with it being a home improvement store, customer would assume you knew EVERYTHING about all the products and how to fix ANYTHING. Despite your attempts to point them to the proper people in the correct departments. It was physically demanding, yes but MORE MENTALLY demanding than anything.

My manager is pretty damn annoying at the Walmart I work at, there's been a lot of complaining and threatening to fire people, what they don't understand is that if there are no carts out in the lot and little carts in the bay and it's REALLY busy then the carts are in the store and we can't do shit about that, we get yelled at for resting in between runs, on a normal day or weekend it's fine we just work, but on days where the pile of broken carts is huge and the carts in the bay are really low it can get stressful and hectic, my manager yelled at my higher up because of a small exchange we had and it went something like, manager: *helping with a carry out* *sees me and co-worker* "are you guys on break?" Me: no, we just came back from a run and got some water Manager: oh ok Co-worker: *rightfully says* Why would you say that *under their breath* *Hella amount of time passes* The higher up: I got yelled at by maneger a while ago because you guys were just sitting at the back of the bay! Higher up didn't mention names but I knew what they were talking about and it pissed me off that my manager didn't even try to understand what they were witnessing, just completely disregarded what I said and made their own judgement, and to think nothing would have happened if I were to have lied to my managers face which was an option but nope I don't like to lie especially to someone that I should be respectful towards, to think that lying would have been better for everyone, my manager didn't even try to talk to me about it afterwards ugh just some shitty experiences with my maneger over at that walmart

In my Walmart I pushed carts for 2 years , and we could only use the machine when the distract manager and his assistants came in and asked why we were not using the machine. I said the assistant managers would not let’s, she over turned that decision , immediately and warned the assistant and store manager to let us use it any time we want

I work at Sam's as a cart attendant and from my experience, I'd say it's rough outside (especially trash weather omfg...), but it's hell inside with all the members and the mangers annoying you to no end. We often get pulled inside to be runners for the cashiers which means more work for less people outside (busy days are the worst). Plus people leave whole bags of trash in the carts and get upset when we don't clean up behind them. Pushing carts isn't that bad but you gotta pace yourself when things get extremely hot and busy because you will pass out (at least in Florida).

At our store Giant/Martins what have you, we have an amazing porch type area so you can pretty much get out of the bad weather. On Sundays however there would be a clean out of our lobbies and we have to take out every regular shopping cart out of the lobbies to the porch area. Sometimes we would have to take the shopping carts off the porch area since they had to power wash that area so the carts were taken back to the no parking area of the lot. Just a couple minor inconveniences but certainly the best retail experience most likely at Giant/Martins.

Hey im code 6 working at Walmart still do the one thats annoying is that when they call for carrier outs... when your by yourself and they tell us to go inside and help somebody with there groceries, tvs, and waterbotters... yeah i know. Its in a small town and i think code 6 carrie outs are held in smaller places. Then you have to tell them i cant to much out here they listen, but its annoying that i have to stop what im doing, and walkes GOOD LUCK finding one when everybody has them for their own personal reasons that your not supposed to do.

Listening to your podcast almost takes some of the “pain” of working at Walmart away!!! Love Walmart however some of the staff are a piece of work…customers think you are there to dump a cart in front of you when they go by like that is why you are there and really believe they are better than you!! Feel really bad for both types because being a person who is happy with her life leaves me to know how miserable those types are…however misery loves company!!
