@@YowLife I wish. There's another Flanoir scene in the second game, if Emil guesses that Raine is the one who accompanied Lloyd on his journey to destroy Expheres, you get a scene that implies they are dating...I'll never understand this ship.

That's because it's not a shipping scene, it's exactly as you described it. Everyone has really nasty minds, I never saw it as such either, when I was growing up.

Kicking the shit out of Lloyd at the beginning for sneaking into that temple definitely pegged her as a maternal figure

Raine was always the hardest one to get enough affection for so automatically she became my favourite lol, it's a rare older-female/younger-male coupling that actually has decent chemistry and doesn't just feel predatory. I think it helps that her brother is his best friend. Although my personal favourite is Lloyd and Sheena

Tales Stuff Now that I'm more mature than I was since I played (in 2004 lol), I actually really love the way Raine and Lloyd would work as a couple. Mostly because Lloyd matures as the story continues and Raine's character type is often shafted in stories (the intellectual mature female character always gets put on the back burner for either the basic love interest (Collete) or the sexually mature love interest (Sheena)). Arguably Raine would also be potentially sexually mature (albeit reserved in her outfit), I'm referring to the outfit/character archetype (the teenage hot chick). Raine is more of a career woman, but also has a heart. Also the way she expresses that she likes him is brilliant and well written and definitely plays on the characters strengths and weaknesses very well. Lloyd is often dense and focused on his goals and objectives (and certainly wouldn't notice the often perceived motherly/professor falling in love with him), while Raine is typically over thinking, analyzing, and comparing things. Or speaking in a way that the others don't understand right away.

You see when an adult woman starts struggling with affection for her younger protege, she tends to prefer testing the waters to see if he'd pick up on her unquenchable lust so she'd feel less guilty by having him make the first move and let him take the initiative. Pay attention to her reference to him as her 'heat source.' Ah, I can imagine you're still confused. Well, a direct translation of that metaphor would be "the fire in her loins." Does that make any sense? No? She wants to be the scabbard to his sword. Do you see, now? That's the metaphor she shoulda used, it's the language he understands.
