On this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with Talib's longtime friend and collaborator, Evidence. They discuss how his upbringing in Venice Beach and living next door to Quincy Jones' son helped shape his love for hip-hop music and culture. They also talk about how he got his name from rapper and collaborator Everlast, showing LL Cool J one of his first songs, producing for Kanye West first debut album "College Dropout", and the story behind his past "beef" with Eminem.

10:05 -- Evidence on the fine line when you're selling sympathy between speaking on sad truths and balancing that with still being a dope emcee and spazzing on tracks
11:50 -- Rap is like the gym, you workout your rhymes and if you go away for a while you've got to come back and work back up to where you were before
12:35 -- Talib on having a show in Amsterdam and staying at a chain hotel while Evidence and Alchemist were staying at a Hostel
15:15 -- Evidence on what it means to go crate digging
16:03 Talib and Evidence reminisce on shooting a music video overseas that was never released
17:16 -- Evidence on whether or not he's a marijuana activist
17:36 -- Evidence on B Real got him into smoking weed
18:35 -- Evidence on the different parts of LA and what it means to be from those different parts
22:25 -- Evidence on why he comes across as an authentic hip-hop artist as opposed to many other white rappers who feel like their inclusion in the culture is a gimmick or forced
23:35 -- Evidence talks about Raaka teaching him about street smarts and how to act
36:30 - Evidence's Kanye West story
44:36 -- Evidence talks about how he met QD3 (Quincy Jones' son) and got introduced to LL Cool J
52:00 - Evidence's Eminem story and how the "beef" started with an Everlast verse

I'm 29 and this took me back to being 12-16. Hearing these stories are so dope. I'm a NYer who first got hip to westcoast gangster rap. LA's underground rap scene was crucial to my growth when I was a bit older. Ev seems like a cool ass dude. Jiu jitsu and all that. I lived in Venice for a year and got to know some locals and he definitely fits that Venice Original type. Shout out to Talib as well. Another legend in his own right. I'm now a new listener to this podcast.

Evidence has been an inspiration to me since, 97? maybe 98. but damn, he touched on something in this interview that helped me realize why I like this guy so much( big shout out to Talib Kweli , Jazz and the people's party for making this interview happen) it's because he does put his personal life out there, if you've been listening to this man for as long as I have you know his struggles, and you might be able to relate to some of them like I have. For me personally, that makes his music that much better. I'm hopin to catch this guy one day at a show just to say thanks.

I was there in Boston for that "Worst comes to Worst" tour. It was a cold November day. I lost my fake ID, I gave my money to a homeless woman, and my people had me outback waiting for someone to pick something up. However, I bumped into y'all and you let me carry T shirts, then gave me a VIP pass. Forever grateful. Y'all were so cool. I forget who toured with, but one group had two MPC's and they kept hitting me up for weed. I gave em' a cupfull of outdoor, went home broke, but had one of the best nights of my life.

Rakka seems like cool people in general. I met Dilated at there Directors of Photography in-store at Amoeba Hollywood on Sunset. At the end of the show they signed my 20/20 and my Directors of photography albums. I brought up this song that rakka was on which was on DJ Revolution’s album King of The Decs and he told me that DJ Revolution was on the first verse which blew my mind because I thought that was rakka all along. he also complimented me on my LA shirt I had on that day. There music was already a part of my childhood in the 90s, but to meet them in person and to find out how humble they are takes the Dilated peoples listening experience to a whole other level.

Best producer on the mic is Q-Tip. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for his work on the tracks. I mean we all know about One Love, World Is Yours remix, Temps Rising, Drink Away The Pain, and all his work with the rest of the crew on Tribe shit, but you go down his producer discography... I didn't even know he produced half the shit he did. Like Gangsta Bitch? I had no clue for a long time. Diamond claimed the title for himself, but Large Professor, Erick Sermon and Lord Finesse might have something to say about that. RZA is going to be a popular answer. Havoc is on the list. Can't forget about Daz. But I'm staking my flag on Q-Tip. The level of skill on the and the quality of his beats added together, probably the highest sum total.

No disrespect to Diamond D, but I think he's overrated as a producer *and* a rapper. He's not wack, it's just so many people are better than him.
