"Hope is a vice". That's the point where the line between Percy and Taliesin is blurred and I love that.

We all know Percy is damaged, and I think that's why people love him so much, Taliesin. We can relate to him very deeply-- he was the first PC who basically got cracked open by the plot to show him at his most damaged and most broken in the Briarwoods arc, and with the help of his teamfamily, he got back up and eventually helped save the world. All of the PCs are damaged in their own special ways, and that's why the Critter community responds so powerfully to our heroes. They're like us-- broken and damaged and wonderfully human. If they can be heroes, so can we.

Talesin is absolutely spot on about the crucial role of _time_ in roleplaying a character who is smarter than you yourself are. When you're just an averagely-smart person but you're playing a character who could give Lex Luthor or Tony Stark a run for their money, the fact that you've got a couple of minutes to plan six seconds of action is sometimes all you've got.

I love my Goth Dad Taliesin.
@carbone1726 жыл бұрын
My favorite thing about Tal is he readily admits that Percy is an objectively terrible person.
@NoriMori19922 жыл бұрын
I don't think he is, though. Whenever Tal says that, I have absolutely no goddamn clue what he's talking about. He's done terrible things, but so has every other character. And in many situations Percy is the one proposing a for more ethical and reasonable course of action than everybody else.
@rianneorgellinnetje41162 жыл бұрын
It refers to Percy doing those terrible things while being fully conscious that it is a bad choice. He did invent guns, knew that thousands of people would die because of it, but made that choice, so that he could selfishly take revenge on 5 people (based on what Taliesin said in the campaign wrap-up). So the 5 people vs 1000s of people choice is not a very ethical choice and while it is understandable that he made that choice, knowing his character and what's happened to him, something being understandable doesn't make it right. Him blowing off the carriage-driver's hand is another example of a bad choice. There were a few other instances in the Briarwood arc where he showed that he can be quite cruel. He did become a better person than he was overtime, he for example managed to forgive Ripley. But he does still have a lot of occasions where his first instinct is to do something bad. If I remember correctly he did plan on killing Scanlan when he had left Vox Machina for a time, before he was talked out of it. But Percy knows that he is a bad person, so he tries to not act on it, which is maybe Percy's version of being a good person. It's a bit the question if a hero is someone who does good things or someone who wants to do bad things, but overcomes it and does something good instead. (Despite all the above, Percy is my favourite character. But thinking about him as a terrible person is interesting. There are arguments for him being a good person too, but this comment is getting a bit long.)

Taliesin talks about how good everyone he meets in the community is. I'd like to point out that the same is for him. At GenCon 2015 (before Crit Role live, when it was just starting to blow up) I was walking up to the G&S booth, he was there talking to a couple teenage guys, he met eyes with me as I was walking up. I was going to the booth to buy whatever CR stuff I could (which was nothing, because they only took cash). The kids said something along the lines of, "We'll let you go hide," so I knew he was caught by them, and subsequently me. He totally could have gone to the back of the booth, and not acknowledged me, but he turned to me, and shook my hand. As I talked to him, he turned his back to the crowd, so he could leave after me, but he took the time to talk, and shake my hand. I didn't hold him up, thanked him, and he gave me a heart felt thank you back. Just a genuine person, and I appreciated that he gave me a moment out of his day.

I would've never thought to pull some of my own mental health/personal problem struggles that I'm going through out of my own head, and to put them into my character that I'm currently playing, to give myself another platform/format through which to analyze things and come up with answers to questions about myself that I'm struggling with, if I hadn't heard Taliesin talk about how he approaches the game that way, and it's been so helpful for my own mental health since I started doing that and I can't thank him enough. I hope I get to say that in person at a convention or something some day.

College of Glamour is confirmed. College of Swords probably will be soon. So that's 4 official Bard subclasses. Whispers is out there, but it's a little too villainous for most PCs. Matt's College of the Maestro is a possibility, though. So that makes 5 or 6 different types of Bard.

Abelhawk if Percy is good for nothing else, he is good at killing low level respawnable enemies. People think that low level enemies aren't a threat at lvl.19, but when you get a dozen of them ganging up on a PC with low AC, it can go south very quickly.

Too true. As much as that battle's MVP stood out, it really was a team effort. Spectators want to single out the quarterback or the guy who hit the winning homerun as having "won the game," but without a solid team, without a team executing defensively and offensively, there is no victory. And kudos to Matt for designing a final battle that engaged EVERYONE. It very easily could have been a battle where one or more players would have been "sitting on their hands" because they either couldn't contribute, or engage the enemy. Instead of having another Percy vs. Kraken battle, where several players were ineffective, or totally useless, Matt designed an encounter that was engaging for everyone, at all levels.

I think that or a Warlock. When he said some similar mechanics, he might mean having hex.
@blackstag93666 жыл бұрын
I bet he'll be something manoeuvrable, A blend of deceit, tactical play and CQC. I feel like he might be a little tired of always taking potshots from afar, being a middle-ranged character opens up a lot of strategic options which I think he would like. A warlock bloodhunter, or a Rogue Warlock would be devastating in his hands. We can hedge safe bets on Travis going balls deep full 20 levels into Bloodhunter, considering his episode in the Feywild were he was frothing at the mouth at seeing the Werewolves. I just hope Travis goes deceptive with it and chooses to go Werecroc or Werepython instead of a big ol' heavy bruiser Werewolf. I played a Werecroc in a one-shot and had the most fun I've ever had, being a giant tank, a Damage dealer, being able to dominate the water environment and peak as an ambush specialist all at once was insane.

Watching that 999 turn to 1k when I clicked like was so fucking satisfying. Oh and, yay go Per-Taliesin! Truth be told, Taliesin has to be one of my favourite players man. I'd be sitting at home, sipping on my hot chocolate when a thought would pop up into my mind. Twice, twice has Taliesin voiced my thoughts while I was still constructing them. I'm not saying anything about myself, but I appreciate an analytical and tactical mind above all else. You might think it weird, but it's why I like Travis so much as well. Not just because of his improv, and his general character, but the fact that he plays a stupid character with a mind as keen as a blade's edge. In battle, while his actions are simple, can be de-constructed into nuggets of gold. His positioning, his choice of attack; more than once have I witnessed Matt re-arranging his plans quite heavily after Travis' turn. It's the same with Percy. I cannot wait for this campaign to end, don't get me wrong I rank this tale along with my favourites of all time, being LOTR, HP, Spartacus and the like; but giving the cast some time to freshen up and then delve back into a fully fleshed out world with spanking new PC's, with the DnD experience they have accumulated? I'll be having euphoric seizures the moment I get the damned episode alert...

This is something I've come to believe in overcoming depression. It's a disease of hope. A cancer of it. You can't rely on hope to overcome it. Willpower is a very limited resource, that if you rely on it in that kind of dangerous emotional situation, you're stepping onto a trap that could end your life if you're not careful.

Hope is a mental process of imagining a potential outcome. I think the general understanding also includes a degree of optimism in the definition. But you cannot exist without being hopeful if you ever think in any abstract way; we all do this if our IQ is above 50. As you read this, you're hoping that I make a point or that you can disprove mine. It is a formative part of our thinking and being. Living without that process would make action meaningless. I'm just saying, it's more complicated that Taliesin thinks.
