Agricultural cooperation is a key element in the strategic partnership between China & Africa. And this will be a key highlight in the upcoming 2018 Forum on China Africa Cooperation. Africa is home to about 60% of the world's arable land, but still faces the challenges of food security & poverty. So what is Africa's best way forward? This week from the village of Morogoro in Tanzania, we seek some insights to this question.

i'm imagining fleets of modern agricultural equipment running on biomethane tending to fields of high yield sorghum, the greens to feed the animals and to use for biomethane fermentation to fuel the agricultural vehicles with, with organic fertilizer as a byproduct.

Africa's agriculture sector accounts for about 35% of the continent's gross domestic product, and provides the livelihood of more than 50% of the continent's population. West African countries and their Development Partners now clearly recognize the sector's vital importance for broad-based growth, food security, improved nutrition and poverty reduction. 12:34 [FAO; The Conversation]

Sixty percent of the world's arable land? Wow. Not gonna lie; the West prospered from Africa's food insecurity. When people are the edge of existence, they tend to let you extract resources for whatever price you offer.

Knowing what we know now about the Chinese tactics, I wonder what the Chinese get in return for their “co operation” with Tanzania and other African countries. Is China vying to become (perhaps in some countries, is already) the new colonial power?

Africa has 65% of the world's remaining uncultivated arable land, an abundance of fresh water and about 300 days of sunshine each year. More than 60% of Africa's working population is engaged in agriculture, and the soil across most of the continent is rich and fertile. Agriculture is central to fostering economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving food security in the Southern African region. South Africa and Nigeria are the African countries with the largest agricultural areas. Respectively, they devote around 96 million and 69 million hectares of land to growing crops. 1:48 [African Development Bank; Statista]

Agriculture is central to fostering economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving food security in the Southern African region. The agriculture sector provides livelihoods directly to around 55 percent of the population (and three quarters of the poor) and indirectly to a further 15 percent within related value chain functions such as traders, transporters and processors. 2:22 [World Bank; USAID]

Agriculture in Tanzania represents almost 30 percent of the country's GDP with three quarter of the country's workforce involved in this sector. Tanzania's agriculture is dominated by smallholder farmers cultivating an average farm size of between 0.9 hectares (ha) and 3.0 ha each. [OECD; Trade Gov] 25:00

Family farming is “a means of organizing agricultural, forestry, fisheries, pastoral and aquaculture production which is managed and operated by a family and predominantly reliant on family capital and labour, including both women's and men's. 14:41 [FAO]

In 1997, South Africa’s first democratic government published a White Paper on land reform, setting out a radical vision for how to address racial inequality in land ownership, and the stark disparities between men and women’s access to land. Seventy-two percent of farm and agricultural land is still held by white people, and only 4% is held by black people. The audit also revealed that women only own 18% of private land, dropping to 13% for farm and agricultural holdings. The results of the audit confirmed that the state’s current approach to land redistribution is failing. 22:00 [Mail & Guardian]
